One of the best hands I've ever seen on LATB

I mean I just feel like he has 19 queens.

93

I mean he just has like 40 queens over there

36
Gengar11•

It's so sick they have 69 queens every fucking time. I should've checked.

10

19 queens IMO

Really enjoyed watching this for so many reasons.

Really interesting to see a player at Garrett's level berating himself like that. But then also amazing to see the way he reacted when he saw the bluff. Like, the fact it's just a game and he's just making decisions is just so deep rooted that he says nice hand and moves on.

Great clip

73
no_nervesLocal Donk•

Probably a big reason as to why he crushes high stakes poker in LA.

15
TheCatsActuallyLAGtard•

I was interested in the language that Garrett uses. He's known for being a nosebleed sicko but talks like a 1/3 player. "Re-reraise" instead of 4bet, "mix it up" instead of balance, doesn't talk about ranges but instead just rattles off the various hands Art could have. Is Garrett just one of those guys who has such a natural talent for the game that he never had to study like everyone else but still demolishes live nosebleeds?

6
DashCat9•

Either that or he does study and just used different terms conversationally.

11
UTTO_NewZealand_•

He might have the philosophy I have, layman terms so the recs/fish can understand

3
DashCat9•

Yeah, I don't usually use the terms "equity" or "range" at the table, unless i know for a fact that a person I'm talking to is familiar with all that.

3
sneyldat•

Yeah he's a really smart player just really old school. He used to crush online games back in the day but live is just so juicy now

1

lol no. he studies and knows a shit ton. I think of it like a QB on an after game press conference, they dont get into the Xs and Os. They keep it simple and understandable.

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply

Very sick angle shoot by Garrett

30
FedSoc•

Garrett responded in the comments of the youtube video, just FYI.

"I’ve already apologized to Art (who I consider a friend) for the "you got it" + pump fake chip toss a few seconds before mucking my cards. Although I was too tilted for any sort of rational thought by this point in the session and have never done anything like that in a poker hand in my life prior, there's no excuse that makes it okay. That combined with my aggressive whining in this hand, it’s just a bad look. I expect better of myself as someone who works hard to try to make the poker table a fun, parasite-free environment for all. For the keyboard warriors who are still deeply offended, Art texted me saying: “I don’t believe for one second you were intentionally trying to angle me.”

66
jeffwingersballs•

I hope Torelli is reading that

39
432575•

Torelli has already totally exonerated torelli, so torelli says torelli is good.

In fact, Torelli has already established with torelli that torelli says nobody is even thinking about torelli at all anymore.

29
dukesilver__•

Doug would've just edited that part out of the video anyways.

11
Furples•

It would be very easy to just explain this away so good on him for taking responsibility. Good guy

7
JakeAndJavis$2+0.42 HUSNG SuperUser•

Meh, maybe I'm just super overly optimistic and give people the benefit of the doubt too much, but I don't think he was angling - he was just done with the hand and was mucking even if Art reacted as if Garret folded.

21
Furples•

It could have just been a weird fidgety thing that Garrett does a lot, but the motion coming right after he said you got it was pretty suspicious. AFAIK he didn't have anything in his right hand when he was pushing it forward, so it's a weird motion to make to reach forward into the table with your empty hand.

With that being said, Garrett is a great role model and ambassador for live poker and it's hard to believe he would angle like this. More players need to start lightening up at the table and embracing recreationals - antonio esfandiari is really good at this too

14
SPACEBAR_BROKEN•

i think he was just reaching forward to grab his chips in front of him and throw it deeper into the middle signaling the was done with the hand after whining. it might look like an angle from our view but art can see everything and hes not going to just much his hand without seeing the other guy muck first.

19
Furples•

ohhhhhhhh that makes way more sense, didn't think of that. The graphic sort of blocks it

9
Clap4boobies•

Props to Art for not even reacting until after g man mucked. Not even a twitch.

Yeah, he's playing one of the highest stakes NLHE games in the world and it's being live streamed - even if Art gave some sort-of reaction that Garret took as weakness/relief I think he would have laughed and just been like "fuck" & folded anyways.

Let me save you the time:

So sometimes in this spot we can either call, fold or raise. I like a combination of all three.

22
BuzzedWoody•

How much do I owe you for my upswang pokeher subscriptions?

8
smug_seaturtle•

Of the three options I like fold or raise the most, although you can call some percentage of the time.

5
nononoyesnononono•

Doug is obviously a beast, but that plus seemingly discounting entirely any hands he blocks in Villans range, drives me crazy. Bro you have one K, it's not impossible Villan has one too. But nope, blocked, all Ks removed from villans range, easy shove. But I'm just a Rec 1/2 noob, so what do I know.

1
Furples•

At the end there where he says you got it and pretends to muck his cards? Yeah that was grimey

11
shill_account54•

I think he was just throwing his chips further in for the dealer(?)

Gman's the absolute nuts as far as live pros go, I doubt he'd go for a Torelli-level angle on a livestream.

i like how the commentator was like "he's a good player for not just checking back the river, and squeezing out some thin value" and it comes back to haunt him lol

27

Videos like this is the reason people are scared to value bet rivers. You should do it but it's sick when this shit happens.

43
Mcbonewolf•

indeed

3

1
DonkedQuixote•

Squeezing out thin value from what though? Literally only JJ?

The frequency you're check-raised bluffed is much higher than getting called by the one hand you get value from. Not a great river bet IMO.

8
HorribleTask•

I mean that's assuming you never ever get called by ace high

6
SufficientNose•

The frequency you're check-raised bluffed is much higher than getting called by the one hand you get value from.

that's a good thing though, if our villain's range is schewed to too many bluffs and not enough value we can profitably call, or re-raise. Remember this is like 1500bb

3
Stringdaddy27Felt Wizard•

I've absolutely abhorred Art's existence in these games. He has my respect after this. It's just one of those spots where,

  1. How is Garrett ever bluffing into nit-bitch extraordinaire Art Paparazzi?

  2. How is Art Parcheesi ever bluffing here? If Garrett shouldn't be bluffing, Art Papadopoulus bluffing is even less likely.

20
cAArlsagan•

He watched rounders the night before "Rags, I had nothing, but he raised and I decided I don't care about the money, I'm just going to out play the guy, I'm going to out play this guy, this hand, I'll re-raise"

12
YOU_PM_ME_BOOBS•

At the time, a part of me thought that Garrett thinks Art wants to just lock up the win... like he can't be bluffing at this point.

Art ran so well that night... it was a sight to see.

16
aquaticboulder•

Still pretty new to poker so please correct me if I am wrong.

Isn’t this at bad spot to bluff? You would want your opponent to be holding hands like AA, KK, AK, maybe AJs which you all block while holding AK.

7
acespreOP•

This is probably a bad spot to bluff for most usual people. Art said that he knows Garrett value bets thin with those types of hands and his play set up the hand perfectly for his bluff. He called Garretts bets all the way down to the river basically leaving Garrett thinking he either has him beat or is bluffing with a very narrow range of hands.

This hand only works due to the two players histories. Otherwise this wouldn't make much sense to do in a live 1/3 game haha

41
solidmussel•

I think this is why Garrett crushes. He puts opponents under so much pressure that they deviate from their normal game ... which makes it easy for him to read their hand.

For example, Art didn't 5 bet or fold pre. He didn't bet turn, which he would against normal opponents.. But then makes a somewhat nonsensical bluff on river.

I think he's lucky Garrett folded, but Garrett is still the better player

11
Infinitezen•

When someone 4 bets you and then checks back that flop you are pretty rarely ahead (as most of his bluffs would keep firing, checking back indicates a trap or a hand strong enough to show down) so leading that turn would be pretty bad. Also, 5 betting AK off pre every time is basically lighting money on fire when you are that deep, especially out of position. I think both players played the hand fine, and Garrett just got outplayed by someone who very rarely makes big bluffs.

18
Grifos•

5betting AK is not lighting money on fire it’s turning AK into a bluff

0
aquaticboulder•

Haha okay that makes more sense, Thanks

1
AutomaticSector•

He's more targeting other pairs like JJ, 99, as well as ace-high hands that would chop. But even AA and KK probably have to fold here so that's just icing on the cake.

4
PufffDaddy•

Good point with the blockers. What are better hands to bluff with that call the turn though?

1
JakeAndJavis$2+0.42 HUSNG SuperUser•

Blockers aren't the fucking central decision maker in poker. Damn. Btw, as evidenced by this hand, your opponent can still have KK while you have a K in your hand. WOW, right?

The only "blockers" going through Art's mind in this hand was LATB's pixelated blockers he was hoping were ready to fire ASAP when he took his giant balls out and put them on the table & fired 30k.

You should play spots in poker, not hands - obviously the hands are a giant factor but they aren't the world.

Edit: also, this isn't directed toward you - just everyone who puts so much fucking weight in blockers when they aren't even super significant (e.g. nut flush blocker)

-12
BrutusHawke•

But they are significant in these spots, if you're only bluffing a narrow range of hands, you want to make sure you have a good hand to bluff with. Great, it worked out here, but that doesn't matter

7
JakeAndJavis$2+0.42 HUSNG SuperUser•

How so? It cuts said combos of V by like what, 1/3rd at the most? What hands are you going to bluff with then that "make sense"? AQ b/c you block quad queens? Lol sorry man I guess I just don't get it; this seemed like a good -spot- to bluff, it was so he pulled the trigger, and it worked, and it would likely work in similar spots in the future.

Garret even said it himself (actually I think Art said it) - Art's perceived range has been pretty narrow the entire session, and both were aware of this dynamic.

-4
markelliott•

having AK cuts the KK and AA combos in half.

Without AK, there at 12 combos of AA/KK. With AK there are 6.

Note that this leaves another 9 combos of AK; more than AA or KK combined.

Maybe you're so upset about blockers because you don't really understand them?

9
MontiBurnsBelow Average Microstakes Player•

Blockers aren't an end all, be all, per se. blockers are useful way to randomize (not betting in predictable patterns) and quantify your bluffs (making sure you're not bluffing too much or not enough), and makes your bluffing hands marginally better. So if there's a hand Ts7s6d, and your hand is the Ac8s, that would be a better bluffing hand than Ac8c or Ac4s. That's not to say that there's no chance villain doesn't have a made straight or flush, but your odds of a successful bluff are slightly better when you remove some cards from your opponent's possible holdings.

That doesn't make it impossible for your opponent to have the hand, it just removes a few cards and makes one hand marginally better to bluff with than another.

Costs him 1/4 of his stack to get 3:1 pot odds with an overpair? What am I missing about why this isn't a snap call?

2†
yanader2NL Hero•

You realise 3:1 isn't just a thing that exists in a vacuum? If some is "never bluffing" 3:1 doesn't mean shit

16
happy_K•

Good rule of thumb, if your opponent is good enough that someone will film him play and put it on the internet, he probably doesn't "never bluff"

-7

3
JakeAndJavis$2+0.42 HUSNG SuperUser•

Obv he could just never see him bluffing with any hand here; Art has just been playing snug all night (running like god, but has always had the goods). AK is like the only hand that makes sense as a bluff here honestly, I don't think it was a terrible fold.

13
Buttermynuts•

Why does stack size matter? It's a cash game and the bet was for less than all in.

I don't know Garrett very well, but what worse hands is he betting on the turn with that he 4-bet pre and checked flop? Seems like Art played this pretty bad and got lucky.

Player attacks a thin value bet, other guy tanks for a month and a half before folding with amazing odds. Amazing stuff, got any more?

The editor is probably manually inserting graphics into the thumbnails. This is useful for aligning certain boards with earlier footage, obfuscating information, or enlarging graphics. These can increase clicks when done well.

Of course, this also allows for mistakes. :)

The gentleman two replies above me knows what he’s talking about. I was such a zombie at 7am this morning when I made the thumbnail, after working on this video literally around the clock for 3 straight days, that I didn’t even notice the error until a colleague pointed it out to me. Been talking about this one all morning lol. If you're betting river there, it's solely to induce, gotta snap call. And I, think that was the plan, he was just like "Oh it's Art and it's the end of the session he wouldn't be value bluff... shit."

-6
JakeAndJavis$2+0.42 HUSNG SuperUser•

it's solely to induce

He bet 2/3rds pot, lmao - what psychopath thinks that a 2/3rds pot bet on the river is going to induce, and versus a pretty TAG player nonetheless? This was 100% a beautiful thin value bet that gets called by worse 10x more often than check-raised by better or as a bluff.

Please, please tell me about all the value that art has to call with.
