The red zone still isn't fun.

Discussion

The red zone just... isn't fun. I'm not whining about dying, I die all the time in PUBG. That's fine. But dying to the red zone feels about the same as having your entire computer shut down mid game and makes me want to continue playing about the same level. It sucks the fun out of the game like no other death.

I'm not saying get rid of it (though I'd be fine with that), but it needs to be tweaked somehow so that it actually feels like it contributes to the game in some way other than letting you occasionally mask your footsteps.

There's so many awesome possibilities that could replace the red zone, can we at least try some of them? Put them in events on the weekend or whatever else, but do something.

Something about flying through a redzone on a bike with explosions going off around me still makes me happy

Car chases through the redzone are awesome.

Turn the red zone into an isolated thunderstorm zone with heavy rain and a little bit of lightning.

How about a napalm plane. It is different color from the air drop, flies lower and creates a solid path of flames.

NeViLLeZPainkiller•

That would probably cause a lot of frame drops for people.

dat flame drop frame drop

Anything is good as long as it doesn't one shot you. It could completely destroy all cover you have, like rocks and trees and stone walls and leave you with a bandage worth of health, long as it doesnt kill you instantly I'd be happy with it.

It would be better if it was 90% death instead of 90% survival so people actually go around and so people blame themselves instead of RNG if you die there

How would that be better?? "hey, we noticed you didn't die to bugs in a while, so here you have a bomb, fuck you."

nellis_island•

The fact that you're PRETTY SURE you can survive it while looting a city just pisses me off more when I'm standing in a building waiting for it to end. If I KNEW I would probably die by leaving the building, I really wouldn't care so much about them.

I'm not about to risk 15-20 of playtime to die by a fucking random bomb the way the zone is right now.

Yeah if it was smaller and more lethal that could be an interesting twist. Actually forcing players out of the area. But then again, I would probably still hate it.

I don't understand what the point of the red zone is. It makes you HAVE to camp in a building even when you don't want to...that doesn't promote action, just more camping.

I brought this up once and was relentlessly called a scrub. Apparently, you're supposed to magically always be in a stand off with another person and when the red zone comes use it to mask your attack.

Of course, the number of times a red zone appears during a fight or when I know someone is around is maybe 1/20 so 19 times I'm basically just getting into the closest house or staying in my house doing nothing.

I don't get the pubg apologists. I've yet to see a single streamer enjoy the red zone, so far everyone mentions it needs to be removed. If they didn't have animations/sounds, it would be literally your player randomly dying. It's not like you can see it from the sky and avoid it.

I agree, all i do during the redzone is mute my volume, hide in a corner inside somewhere and then alt + tab on over to youtube to watch some videos until the redzone goes away.

Dunno if you're running two monitors, but if so, pull up the map screen and click over to YouTube on your other monitor instead. Map screen doesn't capture the mouse, and doesn't force application switching like alt-tab. (For me this means not only time switching, but also time spent in a screen redraw.)

TehCrayz•

Yeah i have two monitors, i'll try that next time, thanks!

The only upside is the audio cover it provides. I assume the original intention was to force people to move around, but it does the opposite as it just incentivizes them to take cover.

I agree with the people who say it shouldn't be perma-death. Currently it's just a frustrating random element.

MimicTMIMedkit•

I’d be okay with it, if I could see and do something about it to not die. Its purely rng based.

Maybe a plane dropping bombs or seeing the north korean missiles.

You realize that indirect fire is a real thing? I've been danger close before and it isn't fun in real life either. You either bunker down and wait for it to be over or get out if you can. You find the cover around you and get as low as possible.

I'm not familiar with the red zone damage in game, but what if it was tweaked a bit? Standing and crouched in the open is still fatal, while prone is not.

This is a highly controversial topic, some people want it removed, some people want it to be reworked and some others even think that the red zone is fine.

400+ hours and I've died like twice to a red zone lmao

1
r_lovelace•

Same but that's because I rarely chance it unless I'm in a vehicle or absolutely need to be moving (red zone appears in my path as I'm heading to blue zone). The vast majority of the time I literally just take cover and wait it out, hoping another one doesn't immediately appear.

1
SparcryptOP•

700 and I’ve died literally twice. Once at about 50 hours and once the other day.

It’s what made me realise how bad it still is. The correct tactic is to ignore it because it’s so low risk but because of that when you do die to it, it’s the ultimate RNG and is just shit.

I’d be fine with it being significantly more dangerous if they insist on having it.

1
furiouspope•

Let's just remove it. I don't think it adds anything to the game besides camping in a building with your volume muted. Which is very literally my strat.

1
DasKarlEnergy•

How about:

The flare gun becomes a rare drop that marks a target for a tighter, quicker and more focused artillery strike?

The plane has a chance of doing a bombing run instead of dropping a crate?

The red zone can't hit within a kilometer of it's last position?

The red zone only lands in the circle so it doesn't end up pushing you into the blue for 5 minutes straight?

Its not supposed to be fun.

I'm not sure they understand the necessity of contrast in game design. Everything doesn't need to be fun. I wonder if OP has ever thought of...not driving through the red zone. It is a risk, cut through or go around.

Like in solitaire when you have to contrast the fun by stabbing your hand with a dull knife between rounds
