The Christmas Tree
I plugged it in one final time,
And flipped it on.
Orange, icy blue, cherry red and lime,
The hue bathed the room where the tiny lights shone.
Even though I was enveloped in a colourful glow,
All I felt was blue.
When I heard the knocking I did not know,
The person behind the door was you.
/
There was a nervous smile on your face,
Probably one on mine.
Masking the grimace,
That I actually felt inside my mind.
“Come in.” I said.
“I am finally taking down our tree.”
I hesitated, full of dread,
“If you’d like you can help me?”
/
It didn’t take long for you to peel,
Unravelling like tattered tinsel,
The scabs I was trying to heal.
Singing like a minstrel,
Plying my ears with honeyed words.
You reminded me of why we broke apart.
Fake snow falling like feathers from a bird,
You reminded me of how I broke your heart.
/
Baubles cascaded from the flayed tree,
Until I had a crate full.
You swore and degraded me,
You told me I was ungrateful.
Glitter stained my fingers,
While I did some finger pointing of my own,
The feelings still lingered,
But you left and this was my home.
/
“Get out.” I said with resolve.
Your nose went red like a reindeer.
“We have problems that we can’t solve.”
“I don’t want you here.”
You were silent as the night.
I could tell you were trying to stall.
So I climbed to the tree’s utmost height,
And knocked your star from its pedestal.
/
You could finally take no more,
“You have a choice to make.”
“If you let me walk out that door,
It will be your greatest mistake”
The epiphany struck me like lightening,
And in that moment I knew,
I could feel my throat tightening,
“My greatest mistake was you.”
