Bridges

You can’t put a Spin on It
When you’re driving over a bridge.

Leaving Memphis, I saw
A big purple hand
Cupped around the city;
It was summer, gadflies
In the air, hazy heat and swamped streams,
And the weight of action
Pulling strings beyond
Reach. Elvis singing us out of
There, himself stuck,
Sitting on the curb.

Back into Boston from Chelsea
On the Tobin Bridge,
Industry opposite Downtown
Across the Charles,
Both brown, the same,
The imprint of boots
In the mud as fire flays
The valley.

Bridges show rust, and
Threaten us with collapse
If we don’t sustain
A practice, hands scooping
Out the contours of a rut
To catch a wheel. Buckle down
Now, you’re getting older faster.

You can’t lie to me about where we’re going,
Or where we’ve been, one way
Or the other; up here I
Might lose my breath
As my heart starts running.
