NHO-idea: provide free golden carrots to everyone who renounces animal cruelty

Suggestion

The NHO could make a shop where golden carrots are free, but you would need a Season Pass to get in (like Impulse's iTrade).

You only get a Season Pass when you renounce animal cruelty by following a set of rules, for example:

  • No automated animal farms
  • No packed farms: for example, every cow should have at least 12 blocks of space (a farm of 10 cows needs to be 120 blocks wide)
  • Only kill animals that reached a certain age (for example: only kill cows that are at least 10 minecraft days old)
  • Only kill animals quickly and painlessly: by one-shotting them without fire

You can only get the season pass after you follow the rules. Not when you just promise you will follow them.

By giving away free and good food, you give positive incentives to follow the NHO's philosophy.

Golden carrots are the best alternative "animal-cruelty-free" food item in the game. They provide less food points (6) than beef (8), but they restore more saturation (2.4 vs 1.6) which makes it almost as good as beef (see wiki). And they are quick to farm. The only problem might be gold. But the trident shop could be set up that it only accepts gold. Or a gold farm could be made in the nether.

Somebody could also found an opposing group called "H.E.T.A." -> Hermits Eating Tasty Animals :)

It is all very complicated...where do we draw the line... -)

Time to bring the Assembly of the NHO together to decide where to draw the lines!

I'd say, if the NHO truly wants to protect and preserve the nature, we need positive and negative incentives. The carrot (ha!) and the stick!

And I'd say, all living (non-undead) creatures are part of the nature that needs to preserved. That's the line drawn.

And I'd say, if it's too complicated, we could simplify the rules: simply no intentional killing of passive, living animals is allowed. Then you will be granted a season pass to the golden carrot store.

Hypocritical if Zombie Pigmen are considered animals.

Hypocritical if Zombie Pigmen are considered animals.

That might be true indeed. I figured mob farms where ok, but there is something to say against Zombie Pigman farms (Zombie Pigman are only aggressive when provoked, they just want to be left alone).

On the other hand, they are undeads, so they aren't really part of "nature".

There's also the fact that some Zombie Pigmen were originally pigs (although probably not Nether ones).

But they’re zombiefied pigs. I’d say killing them is no more animal cruelty than killing a human zombie would be murder. Human zombies and pig zombies behave differently, apparently, but they’re both still dangerous mutations of the original that effectively removes the essense and virtue of what the creature once was.

They are part of the natural minecraft environment though. As such even hostile mobs should be preserved and not farmed. If hunting lions is bad so is hunting phantoms

It could also be viewed that the undead are a corruption of the nature of minecraft, and destroying that corruption is a way to protect the environment (especially turtle eggs!). Spiders would be a better analogy to lions.

But how do we know they are a corruption and not the true inhabitants? (I have no idea about minecraft lore im just being silly)

By saying that, you're drawing a dangerous line. Where do civilized Pigmen like the Mindcrack Server's Zisteau factor into this? Should we do a case by case basis for every Pigman who renounces their tribal ways? 'cause people as things, that's where the slippery slope starts, as Granny Weatherwax used to say.

Zombie Pigman are only aggressive when provoked, they just want to be left alone.

You can get around this by provoking them using snow golems - just not in the nether.

I really want to see a “serious” infomercial by docm77 on how to set up a humane animal farm now. Listing specific dimentions and harvesting methods as well as all the redstone specifics to make it work. I do like the golden carrot idea too.

"Almost as good as beef?" No, golden carrots are unambiguously the best food in the game.

The 2.4 and 1.6 numbers are saturation:hunger ratio. Golden carrots restore 14.4 points of saturation, while steak restores 12.2, out of a maximum of 20 points. Unless you're down more than 10 hunger points (i.e. eating one steak will not fill you up) you'll be better off eating a golden carrot. Most hermits do not go hungry on a regular basis, so golden carrots would be a better food source.

NeveneffectOP•

You are right. I only said "almost as good as" because the wiki gives golden carrots an "effective quality" of 20.4, while beef has an "effective quality" of 20.8. But that is only when very hungry indeed.
