The problems with twisted fate.

So i'm a vel'koz main and the reason i main vel'koz is because there are very few champs in the game that prevent you from having a strong laning phase and you never need to switch your runes around, you scale amazingly so in any game provided the timer keeps ticking you are guaranteed to do a lot of damage and can delete people regardless. In games with tonnes of counter champs you can poke safely from a distance. He can be drafted into multiple roles and so in my opinion he's a very underrated flex pick.

These are thoughts i have about twisted fate - You could take grasp into bad matchups or you could simply not pick twisted fate ever unless it's a matchup where grasp isn't required e.g twisted fate is a matchup specific 4th/5th pick only.

You don't want to pick twisted fate if - the enemy has a nocturne, jax, pantheon, morgana, fiora, sivir.if your lane opponent is - vel'koz, aurelion sol, quinn, orianna. So essentially only lane matchups where you can't get hard shoved early and stand a reasonable chance at surviving the lane comfortably. E.g Annie, Veigar, Anivia, katarina, ekko. You don't want to pick twisted fate if the enemy has a great number of tanks.

Is this about right? Twisted fate has been described as niche before and that's my impression of the champ after 150 or so games.

Actually the only 4 champions against whom I struggle as TF are fizz, yasuo, Zed and katarina. I love facing mages like vel'koz, Ori, lux and others. TF is a weak laner, he can't 1v1 anyone unless extremely fed, or the enemy's an idiot, his forte is roams and nobody can beat a 1.5 channel teleport from halfway across the map with a roam. But I agree on not picking, if they have, jax/fiora top nocturne jungle, fizz mid morgana support and Xayah adc there's no point in picking TF.

You beat zed in lane as tf

I get camped 80% of the time so it's hard, but if the enemy jungler doesn't show up, yes I do beat zed.

I'm learning how to play TF and have been blind picking him in most games. I think you haven't realized how versatile he is.

TF can effectively lock any mid laner out of its win condition through proper rune setup, itemization, spacing, wave manipulation and map pressure.

He can also split push very effectively with relatively low risk while still pressuring the enemy team with his ultimate.

I think it's safe to assume you've been playing TF too passively if that's your take on the champion after 150 games.

I’m about to sound like an asshole, but you have to actually be good at the game to pull off TF. If you have enough skill and knowledge of the champion you can do way more with him than any other mid laner. VelKoz might be a good pick, but he’s ez mode compared to TF. There is a reason that boosters have used TF for years.

because tf is easy mode and punishes bad players map awareness, whereas vel'koz actually needs a team designed around him for optimal potential, thus tf is actually really easy "once you know how" but vel'koz is a champ that you have to straight up get extremely good at hitting combo's and bending q's like a wizard and it takes an extreme amount of skill. Woops i may have said a bit too much. asshole.

Feel like thats not too accurate....from the end of the laning phase you basicly become a gattling gun with a fuck ton of slows and true dmg. Sure you have to hit your skillshots, but after times its like saying to somebody standing in wide open field: 'dodge every bullet a precise robot fires at you with this smg' Sure he takes a little bit of skill but oyu simple dont have to have as much skill as on a lot of other champs (including tf). Its because you have that insurance, that you can be 3 levels down, but as soon as you hit 3 items you basicly are able to play without your head, if you just dont run into an assasin face on.

I mean, you asked the question. Don’t get mad at me for not liking the answer. At least I warned you that you might not like the answer, because there really isn’t any better way to put it. TF requires immense game knowledge that most of us, including me, still don’t have.

You talk about lane but tf isnt really about lane but about the presence he displays for the entire enemy team. Just by having his ult and perma shoving, he can provide a lot of pressure and make the game safer for the teammates. Aside from that you can beat almost every champion in lane with relative ease, if you take the correct runes and secondary rune tree. For example grasp against stuff like kata, zed, fizz and yasuo, makes it almost impossible to kill you, if you take exhaust into these matchups.

Beat every champ in lane with relative ease. HAH. nice joke tf is so weak.

You can beat every champ in lane with TF and even if you can’t u can’t lose lane. Just one trick TF until you eventually discover counters don’t matter to a true tf player

beating someone in lane doesnt mean killing them multiple times

Dude, I pick TF every time. There are a lot of ways to play around your counters. With a Teleport around the Map and a frequent 2sec. Stun, you will never be irrelevant.

Unless the other damage dealers on your team are irrelevant. Then you’re stuck in the back line being a stun bot with not enough follow up, especially vs. a beefy front line that peels you off their carries. Even worse when your comp is tankless.

This is the reason I stopped playing TF in low elo - unless you’re ahead and consistently find picks, you need competent carries to follow up in team fights.

TF into almost all of these champions is a skill matchup; each one has situational defenses that can keep you from getting gold card off, which definitely makes them somewhat frustrating to play against the first few times.

One trick you can use it to wild card them to bring down the shield (noc, sivir), simply peel back and hold the gold card to wait out their defense (morg, jax), or try to play mind games with them by faking an animation (you can regular auto while the pick a card goes through; works great for baiting out inexperienced fiora and pantheon).

EDIT: On the point about tanks, I've found it's important to consider whether they are offensive or defensive tanks (do their tanks tend to engage or tend to peel for their carries?). With high enough CDR, TF either has a target stunned or is only a couple seconds away from having his next gold card prepped in teamfights. You can pretty much guarantee that one person cannot get to your team almost permanently, but he will struggle if they have multiple hard engage.

there is no reason NOT to pick tf in any comp. he’s always good no matter if you’re laning in a kill lane. even if you’re constantly pushed i you can still roam bit by placing a pink between side lane bush and entrance to jung in case of cheese from the mid laner. never a reason not to choose tf imo
