Well, at least once you've got it installed you should be able to get additional updates automatically

These models are not on the support list:

You are correct. Though, Lenovo is quickly adding more models to the list. And given that they just added the P52/72 eight days ago, I wouldn't expect the newer ones to be absent long.

What kind of workaround do you have? My X1Y3 also breaks touchpad and touchstick after resume from sleep

Used linux for ~10 years, sysadmin by profession and spend most of the time on a computer in the shell. However I'm not too familiar with laptop power management (you rarely suspend servers) and it's hooks, etc. (though I guess google probably knows).

Right now I'm compiling a custom kernel since I read that unloading/loading the psmouse module could help but my current distro kernel has that as a builtin and I couldn't find any other (at least working, I did try messing with /sys/bus/serio/devices/serioN/drvctl) way to tell it to re-initialize.

I had continual troubles with the touchpad locking up under Linux on multiple laptops and with a few different distros. At first I could use the psmouse reload workaround, but this stopped working at one point.

After a few years of this recurring, and the problem only getting worse on my Dell Precision 1510, I was about ready to give up. Then I installed the latest Mint update that switched the driver from synaptic to libinput, and I haven't had any problems since.

Anyone here installed ubuntu? I am a robotics guy and almost all of my development is done in ubuntu with ROS. I just ordered the X1X last week and it should be here soon. Hopefully no issue installing and running ubuntu on the laptop.

If Fedora 27 works (current release is 28), I think you are fine.

Hi, did you get X1X work with ROS yet? I am also in robotics and consider getting X1X as my main machine!

Nope, been running on VM

Can someone share what level of GPU selection control the P1's BIOS permits ? I assume that like the P50 that I own one can either go with the discrete GPU only (nVidia) or hybrid (Integrated Intel GPU + nVidia) but not integrated GPU only. Thanks.

Hybrid OR Discrete only.

Thank you!

I contacted support today and they said by the end of the month they should have official support for Ubuntu. By the end of the year, they intend to have RedHat and many other Linux flavors.

Great but is there anyone who runs Linux on X1 Extreme?

Just curious.

If so what are possible use cases?

I am a scientist and linux is my first choice.

I want merch on this - shirt or mug.

Everyday use. The better question is why wouldn't you?

Do you find Optimus annoying when you can't disable it in BIOS?

0†
Friggish•

I'm not on the X1X, but I make do with Optimus. It is annoying and far from ideal, but I'd rather make a compromise here than in the choice of OS. Hopefully one day we get proper Optimus offloading support in the drivers.

If the X1X had a comparable AMD model, I'd go for it in a heartbeat.

Ah, I was wondering about this actually. It seems like nVidia's support for Linux is still in that weird state where it's kind of okay if you use proprietary drivers but you might miss out on things like Wayland in the future. What do you mean by proper Optimus offloading support? Is it something to do with muxless cards and switching to the right GPU at the right time? Trying to understand https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Optimus/ but it's been a while since I've had to deal with multiple GPUs in Linux so I don't know what the current state is. It sounds like these days all outputs are connected through the iGPU so if I don't want to use the dGPU at all I don't have to?

Personally for my purposes I plan to ignore the dGPU if possible, assuming it doesn't affect battery life. I just want the X1X for the CPU and RAM. I'm curious about Steam's new translation layer and might mess with CUDA someday but for the most part I don't care about the GPU. Do you know if that's possible with these cards?

Thanks!

I'm not judging about choice of OS, but I mean I'd probably prefer to run Linux on something with USB-C charging and without Optimus, i.e. with iGPU.

I barely noticed it on my T460p, after the initial setup.

Same use cases as for Linux on any laptop (eg. software development, scientific computing, and just general use). This is not a gaming laptop, or at least, if you're buying it for gaming, you made a mistake somewhere along the way.

12
MarcSN311•

Why do you think it's a mistake to use it as a gaming laptop?

5
iofthestormT440s•

It's not a mistake to use it as one, but to buy it specifically for gaming seems silly - if all you care about is gaming, you can get much faster laptops for half the price.

And I only addressed gaming because I assumed that the questioner was implicitly asking why you wouldn't use Windows on a powerful laptop, when games are mostly only Windows compatible. But perhaps I read too much into that.

3
QueueTee314•

You can buy similar specs or even better with much cheaper price and faster refresh rate elsewhere. There are laptops with 1080 floating around at X1X!/P1 price point and are pretty premium looking.

2
Dr-RjinswandX220 | 380XD•

Yeah but then they're gaymur laptops. This is the closest thing pretty much anyone made to a professional, non-gaudy gaming laptop. If I was in the market for a laptop to game on, this would be my choice.

I was going to run linux on in dual boot if i buy one of these later whem I could afford one.

chx_ThinkPad 25•

If so what are possible use cases?

None left. Just use Windows 10 + Linux subsystem. The world is less painful that way. I tried for 17 years and gave up (25 years and more on servers). Writeup at https://github.com/chx/chx.github.io/wiki/How-I-set-up-my-Windows-10-(coming-from-Linux)
