Can I have a cigarette?
Lip’s entranced by lavender and lilac, with a cigarette placed between them.
One calming inhale on a lipstick stained cigarette, then the exhale.
The exhale, the inhale, the exhale…
The in…
The first inhale, the first inhale to be seized.
She was beautiful, in that concluding moment.
To think what it would feel like too be that smoke that engulfs her, to be her disease.
Looking from afar enticed by everything about her, nervousness surrounding me.
“I could use a cigarette” I say to myself.
Then she approached; Eyes like honey, skin so delicate.
She speaks with a voice unfamiliar, but reassuring.
“Do you have a cigarette” .
In the moment I’d felt my ears filled with ecstasy.
How could this woman be so heavenly?
I reach in my crumbled pack of cigarettes and retrieved a Camel Crush Bold.
I handed it to her with a smile and say, “I like your shirt”.
She told me “Thanks” with a smile like gold.
[Fast forward]
The ex…
The Final exhale, the last exhale to be breathed.
Still beautiful she was, but there is new smoke in the air.
Not from the cigarettes from which our relationship was conceived.
This smoke was clouded judgment and me thinking I was fair.
I left that night, not looking back.
Smoking’s bad for you, but now I have Prozac.
