Neon Genesis Evangelion is coming to Netflix, how do we get Dan and Jeff to watch this 26 episode classic/nightmare?
In all seriousness, I believe Jeff would love Neon Genesis Evangelion's subversion of anime tropes and the movie that gave the fans exactly what they asked for, while also being the ultimate take down of fan obsession and ownership(seriously, if you have not seen it, look up nothing and just watch the series). His deep love for series going right off the deep end makes Evangelion's slow burn realization that everyone in the series is human garbage the most Jeff show that could exist.
Dan would kinda hate it. I don't really have a solution for that problem. Maybe Jeff and Vinny should watch the show?

I think you overestimate what is is they like anime and no amount of subversion on NGEs part is going to make Jeff enjoy the majority of that show.
Also the slow burn. There's a whole lot of those show where nothing apparent is happening and then suddenly it's all weird shit that people remember NGE for trust front and centre.
And Dan would absolutely hate it. He might like the few fighting parts, but those are few and far between and he would as u/EricandtheLegion points out absolutely hate Shinji because Shinji is mostly insufferable.
The really hardcore anime fans are the ones that seem to most misread what it is about Dragon Ball Z that clicks with Jeff and Dan, and also why most other anime wouldn't. When they talk about all the "weird stuff" that happens in Z, that doesn't mean that will translate to them liking the "weird stuff" in Evangelion at all. What they like, especially Jeff, is the dumb, stupid gag manga/anime parts in the same way that they'll like dumb stupid parts of wrestling or dumb stupid parts of the Fast and Furious. The parts that make you laugh out loud and go, "This is soooooo dumb!" but not necessarily in a bad way. It's not an outright malicious or mean "laughing at it" deal, but what they're enjoying is this big dumb show is not taking itself seriously. It's not precious about itself. Anime that takes itself deathly serious like Evangelion is exactly the tone that Jeff and Dan will absolutely and totally hate and disdain. It wouldn't even be a mild dislike. I'm talking about a nuclear "fuck this show" type of reaction from them. And just as an aside, I love Evangelion. I just know, they will hate it.
Exactly. DBZ fills the void left in Jeff by him quitting wrestling. One of his first favourite weird moments was King Kai making the Nokia ring tone for a ring ring joke. The ginyu force are just a goofy wrestling stable.
There's none of that in NGE. There's some early typical anime stuff of over reaction, red faced screaming, blue blushing and teardrop sweat beads. There's that penguin guy. But that's it and that's quickly abandoned for the actual weird shit like computer mom.
This is why I think, despite Jeff's aversion to the art style, is why I think they both would really like JoJo's. It's just so goddamn goofy in a post-Cell DBZ kind of way, and it (especially SC) has a fantastic road movie style of downtime-to-fight ratio that would always keep feeding the idiocy and action they like in equal measure.
I also don't know how effective a shonen anime subversive show would be on people that have basically no real history with the genre? Like, they'd probably like Hunter X Hunter, but not for the reasons people would scream at them, right? Their only context for the ultimate powerup is Super Saiyan. They haven't seen that trope beat into the ground by every other popular battle manga in the last 20 years.
People don't get what Dan and Jeff like about DBZ. Jeff was right about anime fans being the real problem. Lol
I agree with you, but I think JoJo's is just too much of an upfront investment. They'd probably like Battle Tendency because of Joseph (how can't you?) but Phantom Blood would put them off. Even then, it's still a while until you get into the "Wacky Stand battle" stuff.
Agreed. That inability to separate what you like and what someone else will like is why most people that don't like anime find people that do insufferable.
Yeah, and it seems most especially focused with the anime community for some reason. I'm reminded of the Bill Burr clip where he mentioned while late night drunken Netflix browsing he stumbled upon One Punch Man and enjoyed it, and how the next day on twitter he got back tons of rando messages from people going, "OMGAH I can't believe you like anime! YESSS AAAAHHHH!" And Bill was like are anime fans like emo fans? Is anime emo? To which I say... you're not wrong Bill. You're not wrong.
I think that also seems to be why they are enjoying a lot of the Buu saga more compared to Cell. I think for a lot of fans that like DBZ as a more serious anime enjoy the Cell saga since it was bit more serious whereas the Buu is this dumb goofball type and a lot of the stuff happening isn't so dead serious.
I'm glad about that last part since I also loved the Buu saga overall more than Cell.
At least in my opinion they haven't gotten to the "bad" part of the Buu saga. They're only halfway though. It actually starts out pretty good, but then really fucking drags towards the end.
I wonder if they'd like Gunbuster since it's pretty to-the-point.
I love Gunbuster but I don't think they would like it much. From what I remember there isn't a ton of action scenes until like the second to last episode and at that point they seemed to go over their budget and the last episode suffered for it by having to be done in black and white with a major battle scene being cut completely.
Yeah, that's true. Although this:
Is actually a stylistic choice! Infact, they animated in black and white on color film which increased the cost.
haha that's cool. I had always just assumed that since the last major fight got cut that the color was also a concession they had to make for budgetary reasons.
I know, I know....sign. The series really starts to get weird right about the middle of the series, though it always hinted it could go there. Right about the time where Shinji becomes soup and then unsoups himself.
Man, what a weird, amazing show with a legendary theme song.
"becomes soup and then unsoups himself"
I love that fucking show.
Would love to hear them try to parse out what the hell is happening at any given moment on ASG, sadly I don't think they'd stick with it or have fun
I wonder if they need to like it?
Wouldn't it be entertaining to listen to them be like "Shinji's a bitch" and "What the fuck" for the run?
I think the main problem is that they would need to like watching it to continue doing the podcast about it.
They'd absolutely need to like it to watch it.
If Dan is going to watch any of it it'd likely be on Panning the Stream with his wife, where they'll watch a few episodes of things they've no interest in it but think it'll make for a good podcast reaction.
Dan is reticent to try Persona because he hears it has angsty teens in it.
People want him to watch Shinji >!jerk off and cry!< over his friends hospital bed.
edit: also even if they did end up liking it, it would make for a terrible, unfunny discussion.
of the opinion that if they wanted to jump on another series then FMA: Brotherhood would be the way to go. similar mix of goofy bullshit and well done, occasionally brutal action.
they also had a positive reaction to it during the crunchyroll panel
