General advice for people casually playing standard and having trouble

RE2:RE2:

Some spoilers ahead

Knife

  • Dont use it to stop a bite, unlike Hardcore, you can tank a few bites and there’s plenty of herbs unless you’re getting bit with every encounter

  • For solo zombies shoot the zombie in the head(?) enough times to knock it out, spacebar to bring out your knife and slice it at the body/head repeatedly, you use less durability than a defensive stab and it kills the zombie permanently

  • Alternatively, if you see a corpse that you’re pretty sure will spring back in a bit, you can use the knife to dismember its legs. Itll wake up from being sliced, but itll be a crawler

Lickers

  • you can walk normally, as long as you dont press the sprint button they wont hear you, no need to “slow walk”

  • Proximity doesnt matter until they actually physically touch you, they will growl when you go near, dont shoot back, keep walking

Mr X

  • Dont bother wasting bullets, just run

  • He climbs ladders slowly, so the library is a good place to make distance, he jumps down though so it works best going up, you’re also immune when climbing (?)

  • While its a common advice to run past most zombies, it makes dealing with his sections a lot better when you actually clear hallways and board windows. If you’re going to pump bullets into him, you might as well use it on the zombies early on instead to make a path

Decent advice, especially with Lickers. Took me ages to realise I didn’t have to crawl past at a snails pace and could walk normally

What are some other ways to use knife? From what I've been told it's better to shoot em in the legs instead of the head to knock em out. I think it's a waste of bullets to shoot em in the head til they KO. Would rather just blow their kneecaps off with that many rounds.

Headshots stagger zombies so you can run past, severing their legs takes more shots and doesn't stagger them for as long.

LinarcOP•

Check if they’re “alive”

I prefer to shoot to down since it lets me position myself behind them when knifing them to death, otherwise I can get grabbed.

My sister also ended up with 200 spare handgun ammo after killing literally everything except 3 lickers. Ammo got scarce at one point but the fact that it was only mr x left to be a threat kinda made having little ammo not a breaker since well, cant kill him anyway. This is Standard tho not hardcore

The knife is also handy for checking zombies on the ground to see if they're gonna get ruckus.

bigrednc•

Lickers don’t see you? Well shit....

Ive been blowing all my ammo away on them and running in and out of rooms to get away from them....

7
LinarcOP•

Yep a note you find after the first licker scare tells you they’re blind, you mightve missed the note RIP ammo. At least it makes backtracking easier

To be fair, on a Claire run, you can frag every licker in the game with the grenade launcher and have plenty to spare for boss fights, sewer demons, and some plant monsters.

Personally I like shooting zombies in the legs so they're crawling then stabbing them from the back.

Also you can preemptively kill zombies that are "dead" in the hallways (example cop zombie in the beginning between the safety deposit room and west office).

I'd say it's worth it to shoot Mr. X during ONE part of the game: the library puzzle. There's pretty much no way to get through it without him coming in there so I drop him to his knee and finish up.

3
LinarcOP•

We just ran around and lost him. He does tend to lose you once you make enough distance.

12
crashchaff•

Did the same thing as Claire. He actually walked through the library while I was doing the puzzle but I was on the upper floor of the library and he was on the lower floor so thankfully he didn’t see me.

3
LinarcOP•

I, amusingly enough, was actually able to "stalk" him through 4 rooms. I'm not sure how he didn't notice me, but I followed him as we were headed to the same area, but in a intersection in a hall he turned left and I went right.

My sister was also able to hide in the Armory, standing at the back behind the lockers, you can peek at the door, he looks around the room and goes back out. Though it'd probably not work if he saw you go in. It seems you can hide in the room if he goes in to check.

4
crashchaff•

Yeah that’s what I realized, I stayed out of his line of sight a few times and actually evaded him. I found that walking instead of sprinting and bursting through doors actually lowers the chances of him finding you.

Two Magnum shots are pretty economical, but if you are on Claire I wouldn’t waste the ammo. If you don’t wanna do the Benny Hill routine then just hide in the STARS Office and wait for him to move on. Then WALK (don’t jog) back to the Library and do the puzzle.

Lol Benny Hill

A flashbang should last long enough.

2
Nigmus•

Damn. I was in danger, no ammo or health items so I decided to walk very slowly. It took me about 5 minutes to get from the west office to the dark room...

3
LinarcOP•

I was doing this as well the first time and my sister asked me wtf I was doing and told me to just walk. Apparently she had the balls to try it and I didnt lol.

4
Nigmus•

The tension was real and I don't even regret it.

2
LinarcOP•

It still scares me tbh. When you pass directly below or beside them they react but not aggro, it still gives me that feeling of oh fuck I want to get out of here haha.

4
thefancykyle•

I got way too over confident with bringing down Mr.X at every chance I got as Claire, I'm now back at the PD after the sewers with like 10 High Power rounds and 1 acid grenade, don't make my mistake, just run.

3
IFightForMyMemes•

Are you sure lickers won't notice you if you walk around them? The first licker in the game on the ceiling in that one hallway aggroed immediately when I very slowly walked towards it, so I just ran with the assumption that they don't work like that in this game.

2
StacyScene•

Lickers won't notice you if you walk into a room they're in, but once you aggro them, they basically go unblind and always see you, it's sorta really shitty but that's how it works.

3
IFightForMyMemes•

Interesting. I'm not that far into the Remake yet so that's why I was confused about it. Thanks.

2
LinarcOP•

If by first licker you mean after a certain explosion event, its automatically aggroed in that single instance sadly

2
IFightForMyMemes•

I was referring to the licker in the hallway after the showers. The second licker is the one you're referring to, and that one I just ran because I assumed it would aggro on to me automatically. So, if what you're saying is true, then that would mean both of the first lickers in the game auto aggro? Am I understanding that correctly? If so, that's weird.

2
RunningOnAngry•

The first licker i encountered was the one next to the S.T.A.R.S office, and he most certainly isnt agroo'ed, he just picks a corpse up with his tongue but thats it, you can walk past him just fine.

3
LinarcOP•

Hm I walked through that all game. Even on a separate playthrough, are you sure you werent running when you entered? It can hear you run anywhere as long as you’re in the same room

2
henrokk1•

Do you mean the hallway outside the STARS office?

That was my first encounter with one as well. And I remember it well because he dropped down in front of me but didn't notice me, and he started walking towards me and I backed up all the way back to the door way as I was freaking out. Super tense moment for me as I was already on edge the whole time around that area because of the note telling me about them.

In fact that might be why it aggro'd for you and not me. I was walking slow around that whole area including walking into that hallway. Perhaps you sprinted into that hallway and it automatically aggros him.

1
IFightForMyMemes•

I watched Markiplier, and the one in the hall didn't aggro on to him on his second attempt (it killed him the first time). Maybe I did run into the room from the showers? However, once the tongue animation played, I stood still and it attacked me. So, I don't know anymore. Haha...

1
Vorstar92•

Wouldn't be surprised if the first encounter is scripted just to make you scared for the entire game and immediately just shoot them so you think they auto-aggro or whatever lol. Which is fine, once you do 1/2 playthroughs of being scared of them it's fine to know on your third that you can just sneak past them.

1
LinarcOP•

If the first encounter he’s refering to is the explosion, yes its scripted to auto aggro. Though you also find the memo saying they’re blind nearby

Its probably like you said, to give you a taste of what an aggro’d licker is like

2
Ouroboros612•

IIRC if you exit and re-enter the room the licker should reset and function "as intended".

3
IFightForMyMemes•

Yeah that first encounter could have been done better, in my opinion. I understand the purpose was to set the fear of God in the player, but it also created a false expectation of them for future encounters. >!When I knew one was going to attack me after getting the last medallion, I just booked it to the library and still took damage because I assumed there was going to be no way I could avoid it.!< Also, during the first encounter I got killed immediately by the licker because I was in danger status and didn't expect it to jump halfway down the hallway and kill me while standing still by the door, LOL...

HOWEVER... I should mention I'm playing on hardcore mode and if they changed their behavior a bit on this difficulty than that would explain some things.

2
LinarcOP•

Hm, I haven't tried Hardcore yet so I can't actually say. But the one attracted by the explosion is definitely aggro'd automatically unless you re-enter the room as mentioned by Ouroboros above. It really just leaps at you if you dont shoot it the moment it pops up.

2
Nigmus•

A single magnum round to the face causes Mr. X to kneel temporarily. Useful if you need to squeeze by him, but make sure not to miss!

2
DripGodd•

it’s funny you don’t need to slow walk past the lockers because the memo you pick up says you need to walk at “a grandmas pace” or something similar 🤣

2
LinarcOP•

I think it said be like the writers grandma and sneak everywhere or something. But then again Id find it infuriating is the base walking speed is the top speed.
