CMV: Cash free lots and fixed interval parking rates are both scams, especially when paired together, and need to be outlawed.

Just take your coins and put them in your bank account for cash free parking.

This is a fair point but it requires a trip to the bank that isn't close and I'd have to pay for half an hour of parking when this whole errand would take all of 10 minutes.

It's still better than letting $40 in coins get unused.

Cash Free Parking - While I understand that many automated lots want to expedite the payment process, eliminating cash has only made it more inconvenient for the consumer. I have so many coins sitting in a jar in my bedroom that I intended to use specifically for parking, but most of the lots in my town have been retrofitted with card-only kiosks.

This is 100% a you problem. Now you have vending machine fodder. Or use it when you purchase groceries. Put it in your bank account.

Furthermore, for the people who might have trouble keeping sufficient funds in the bank or can't always make payments on their credit cards, they run the risk of not being able to use other forms of legal tender to pay for parking when they run errands or go to an appointment. I'm glad that lots allow card payments now, but eliminating cash is unfair for consumers.

Run errands with what money? What appointment are they going to that is also free?

Fixed Interval Rates - This is my biggest gripe because I don't run errands in neat, half hour intervals. With this system, drivers are constantly overpaying for the amount of time they park.

You also have an issue with all coin parking meters then?

You rent the space for X time - if you are finding inefficient uses of the time you paid for, that is also a you problem. Is it possible for you to go to class and then grocery shopping afterwards to maximize your time spent at the parking space?

That's fair, but considering I don't often use vending machines my use value for coins has been slashed.

If you believe that convenient transportation is somewhat of a necessity, you can also agree that people with cars and people who eat also might be paying for parking and could use to save a few bucks at the meter. Appointments can be paid for with insurance or could be a work meeting that doesn't cost money to attend.

I guess that fits with my view but all coin meters often allow more flexible pricing (paying an exact amount for an exact amount of time).

No it's not. My school's campus is isolated so there are very few private businesses on campus and I don't buy most food at the school run convenience stores.

The "you problem" angle is a very fair point but it doesn't make me think fixed interval rates aren't a scam.
