New to the game, questions

Questions

I got this via ps plus. It seems pretty fun but is a little overwhelming with the amount of unlocks and menu options. I will probably play a bit more (only done the very basic intro tutorial then jumped into bot games and the big multiplayer thing for the daily metal).

Main question is: how much of a commitment do I need to put in to make the game fun? The combat seems really in depth, but I don't think I can handle a game that is there to consume all my free time. Can I be competitive/have fun with just a few hours a week? Particularly with the seemingly steep learning curve.

Also, are there any tips I could give to friends to get them to enjoy the game more? We did one zone control style map and it was sort of unevenly matched skill wise (we're all noobs), and they were sort of luke warm on it.

Also, I randomly unlocked Nobushi, and it seems a little hard to play, particularly against orochis. Is nobushi a reasonably good hero or should I play something else (don't own any DLC obviously)?

Have fun, no worries about that. Be competitive? Yeah...that requires significant investment in the game.

Biggest tip I can give you is to tone down the joystick dead...zone? in the advanced controls. That way you will be able to switch guard much more faster.

Nobushi is one of the best hero's in team fights, and one of the worst in 1v1's.

All the heroes are viable at lower levels, but you will always find some easier and harder matchups to handle at those levels too.

The real trick with getting good isn't so much a massive time investment, but more just sticking with a main hero and learning how to adapt their playstyle to the opponent. Nobushi is considered to have one of the best defensive capabilities in the game with hidden stance, but learning to use it properly will definitely involve a lot of timing mistakes. Look up Faraam on youtube and you will find some incredible nobushi gameplay.

Do you have to invest time to enjoy the game?

The combat system is easy to learn but hard to master. If you have time to practice the game (After school, uni or work) then you'll be absolutely fine. You should play the story to get used to the combat system (and of course to earn some nasty steel)

Competitive?

The game has a competitive focus, but most of the players are casuals, so no worries

Nobushi?

Her kit and hidden stance takes time to learn, especially for a new player like you. I recommend youtube tutorials. Also the "She is weak in 1v1" only applies to medium/high level play, right now you don't have to worry

The game has a rather steep learning curve, but if you're just looking to have fun, you pretty much only need to know the basics of combat and the general strengths and weaknesses of the characters you play. Nobushi for example has an incredibly strong defense due to Hidden Stance and the multiple options it has for countering, but her offense is lacking due to her slow attacks.

What makes her strong defensively? Is it just the psychological games of hidden stance? Is it just because I can stay alive and poke while waiting for others to come help?

Hidden Stance has dodge properties, meaning that you can dodge an attack with it and attack back with either a poke or a kick while the opponent is still recovering. You can also do another dodge from it, meaning that Nobushi can essentially do a double dodge, allowing her to avoid tons of mix-ups. These things make it great for staying alive until help arrives while also allowing you to slowly but surely whittle down the opponents health.

Also remember that you can cancel your lights and heavies into Hidden Stance, allowing you to bait parry happy opponents and punish their whiffed parry attempt.

Basically hidden stance gives you invincibility frames (I-frames) that lets you dodge attacks and the follow ups you have from hidden stance allows you to punish certain moves and attacks.

Im also on ps4 if you want some pointers or need a training partner to get you acclimated with the game and the mechanics.
