I use Google Docs, and I think it's pretty good

Abiword has worked extremely well for me. I've been using it for just over two years. Just be sure to save and back-up often, because it doesn't handle crashes well.

For Windows, it has to be Atomic Scribbler. I own Scrivener, but A.S. has the best writing environment, hands down.

Quoll Writer is fairly good, but it doesn't handle scenes, just chapters. Atomic Scribbler handles scenes and chapters.

I found yWriter to be kind of obtuse in terms of being able to intuitively use it. I think it makes Scrivener look easy. Still, lots of people love it.

Manuskript? umm, it's OK. I'd say give it a try, you might like it. I'm not a big fan of the user interface. Still, it hits all the tick marks.

WaveMaker? If you need to be able to write on different operating systems this works fairly well. Kind of light on the features at this point, and you have to have a Google Drive account to use it. BUT, it's a solid and very functional option for a number of people.

yWriter or something. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Yup. I purchased Scrivener and I don't regret it. Considering how much time you're going to spend writing, it's worth it to get a decent program.

Seriously, it's $45. It isn't that expensive!

If you are successful in NaNoWriMo, as I understand it. Still, it's $45. Who cares? It's not like you're paying a thousand bucks or anything.

I recently downloaded Quoll writer, and I like it so far. I like how it counts how many times a character and location appears in a chapter. I also like the distraction free mode that fills the screen so you don’t get tempted to click other programs.
