We'll we've never seen Obsidian with Rose so you could still be right. She'd just be much bigger than the temple haha.
Oh yeah I guess I worded that weird. From the picture it looks like ob with Steven is the same size as ob with rose if that’s what the temple is based off. I just thought Steven ob would be like maybe a little bigger than Alexandrite at most
Ohh I see. I still don't even know how big Alexandrite is supposed to be tbh.
I use this when referencing gem size. It doesn’t have the newest fusions but it holds up I think
She fit at a table... sort of.
The "Gems" are the same. It's still a Pink Diamond fusing with a Sapphire, a Ruby, a Pearl, and an Amethyst.
Yeah but it’s stated that a gem fusion is a combination of the power and size of the combined gems. It’s like Rainbow Quartz 2.0, she’s smaller with Steven than she was with Rose
RBQ 2.0 takes he/them pronouns!
And isn't Smoky Quartz 2.0 smaller than Rose herself?
Yeah Rainbow did look pretty short, I thought maybe Lapis’ height? but it’s hard to tell without other people around. I hope we see more of them, it’s exciting to me to finally see a “male” gem
So was the temple like a 1:1 recreation of Obsidian or was it some sort of leftover "shell" from the fusion? I was originally hoping that the Crystal Gems would all "pilot" it in a way to fight the complete Diamond mech but that wasn't the finale we got.
The style of the carving and the state of ruin the statue is in has always made me think it was created as a sort of a shrine by early humans, in tribute to their goddess. That it was carved strategically into the mountain around the pre-existing Temple entrance.
That's always been my interpretation as well. The temple had to have been built after the war because it was built after Amethyst joined the CGs as she is part of the Obsidian fusion. Thus, it was either built by humans or by some/all of the living CGs (Rose, Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst.) Of those two, I definitely lean more towards Humans creating the statue than the CGs.
At least we got obsidian's theme out of it
I am really hoping they explore that since, if it is some kind of shell or afterimage that would be a new mechanic, but if it was built by humans what in the world is the story behind the sword laying under the water?
The sword is off to the side of the Temple. It would seem that one of the broken arms had once been holding the thing.
Also I always figured the warp pad implying that one of Garnet’s hands.
Yeah! That's pretty cool, right.
Though in the actual fusion, the gems seem to be quite a bit smaller.
This was before we really knew much about fusions
Predictably enough, the scale of gemstones in a fusion isn't all that consistent either. Obsidian is one of the only times I can think of where the stones haven't increased in apparent volume to look nice with the larger body they're powering. Up until it happened, it would be reasonable to expect they'd be these enormous rocks the size of a warp pad.

You gonna need a reboot, there?
Don't worry, i'm fine.
I see why people get upset about the lack of consistency, it is quite grating. But it isn't a detail that has to be pointed out every episode.
I mean. Clearly it's just not a major priority with this particular creative endeavor. At some point it's probably sane to accept this and move on to the ideas that the show is interested in.
In this case the comparison was in response to not-infrequent assertion that the new Obsidian seems to be significantly smaller than the original, if the temple is any indicator.
But, as inconsistent as things are from shot to shot, it would seem the intention is for them to be the same size. It's just, what size that is relative to other things depends on the needs of a given scene.
Can I be the one to point out that Steven's clothes are hanging on Temple Obsidian's fingers, like they were (briefly) in the CYM fusion?
F O R E S H A D O W I N G
How did Connie ever think that that tiny toothpick could slice an entire handship being lobbed at her in one fell swoop?
Too much anime.
She read Homestuck.
I'd say they're... about the same.
Hey, that’s pretty close!
I don’t know about you but this one seems more accurate than most.
A tiny bit smaller.. nice touch.
Scale in Steven Universe? Hahahhaa
Anyone ever consider that Crystal Temple Obsidian is bigger because it was made with Rose/Pink Diamond. That the new Obsidian is smaller to compensate for STEVEN'S lack of being 8-14 feet tall?
Thing is, going by direct comparison, it... isn't?
It looks just a bit smaller, imo. Maybe 2.8 Connies wide, vs 3 Connies.
I know these scenes aren't meant to be compared side-by-side, but I find it fun to do anyway:
The scales on the special were way off and, while it doesn't ruin the experience, I hope the movie is more careful with them.
I think anything involving the ships is going to be especially wonky. As one of the larger structures in the show, the Diamond mech is one of the most sensitive to the whole "big numbers are big" thing that our brains do, where millions and billions and trillions all sound alike to us, and therefore it constantly shrinks and inflates from shot to shot, by several orders of magnitude.
Whenever the thing lands in Beach City, especially, it seems to shrink to a fraction of its size on Homeworld. Or the size it must sensibly be if people and Diamonds are supposed to be able to stomp around inside it.
By comparison, weird cutaways aside (as in an above post), the size of Obsidian seems fairly constant when you put it next to more familiar, therefore more static, elements like the human characters.
There is no objective sense of scale on this show. That's just kind of one of its eccentricities that one grows to accept. But as far as comparisons go, this seems like a pretty clean one in that we're measuring Connie for Connie.
Correct.
Wal, thar ye go!
The scale even in that one shot is a bit odd, as it often is when they try to do an exaggerated perspective. The size of Connie's head relative to the rest of her body calls to mind the shot from "Steven's Birthday" that everyone likes to fuss over.
I like it, it’s good to know which parts you want to emphasize in a scene
Didn’t make it any less epic
How does that one look?
Pretty sure it's this one.
Shit like that makes me want to burst a blood vessel. Ever since someone here pointed out how badly the scale is for SU, I can't stop myself from getting illogically angry when I see it.
I usually don't even notice until I actively look for it. It doesn't bother me.
I mean, it's a bit silly, but I'm not sure that it's liable to do a person any lasting psychological damage.
It makes me wish for an eventual remake of the show. I know it's unlikely, but imagine what they could do! Fix up the weird early episode stuff like the Pyramid Mural, the Shooting Star and the Geode, make sizes and gemstones make sense and be consistent between shots (Is there a ring around the girdle or not? How are the edges curved? Why does Pink Diamond's gemstone change how many facets it has whenever it rotates?) as well as clean up some pacing issues. It's a pipe dream, but I'll hold onto it until I die.
Avatar: The Last Airbender got a reboot. It's not entirely impossible that Steven Universe does too. It usually takes a decade or four though so don't hold your breath.
God I just love the consistency in this show
Universal truth of this show:there is no model
Speak for yourself
Edit: it still bothers me idc
