PSA: Moving over from IOS and miss swiping to go back globally?

PSA

Install One Hand Operation+ by Samsung from the Galaxy Store. It's seriously a life saver for people who are used to swiping to go back. You can also assign a bunch of different gestures as well.

I switched from almost a decade of iPhones to the Galaxy S10 on Saturday. No regrets whatsoever.

And it was easy to adjust, took me all of like 4-6 hours.

Yep, this. My last Android phone was in 2010...so I thought adjusting would be a huge pain. Nope! Took me maybe half a day to get used to Android.

I'll also say that Samsung's ability to take my iCloud data and convert it into their ecosystem is seamless and works.

That was one of my bigger concerns - that and iMessage, for some reason. I don't miss either at all.

I've since realized that iMessage was nice, but it wasn't the greatest thing in the world to keep me.

I just switched from iOS yesterday. I had actually never used an Android in my life, but I'm enjoying my s10+ so far.

What did you use to transfer your iCloud data? All I did was perform a backup with Google Drive. It worked fine, but just wondering if I'm missing anything.

Samsung developed Smart Switch. In your S10 box was a cable adapter that is used to connect your Lightning Cable to the USB-C connector for the Galaxy.

In your S10, go to Settings --> Accounts & Backup --> Smart Switch. It'll walk you through the process.

I'll also try and dig up the website from Samsung with the walkthrough.

Use the back button, it's a million times better. Or stock gestures (or one hand operation if needed).

Former iOS user :D

I like the back button on the left and sometimes my right hand can't reach it :p

switched too from iOS but there is 1 thing that pisses me off big time.

Swipe up to open the finder and the keyboard doesn't pop up automatically

I mean who thought was a good idea to open the finder and then NOTHING? If I'm opening the finder there's a 100% chance that I'm gonna type something to fucking FIND!

You mean swiping up from the home screen? That's more your "apps page" that also has the search bar

11
phishfiU.S. Unlocked Galaxy S10+ - Ceramic White 512GB!!!•

Yeah... that behaviour would be absolutely frustrating for me, because I never use it to search. I sort alphabetically so that I can swipe up and scroll to the app I'm looking for.

Since you're coming from iOS, though, I assume you keep the vast majority of the apps you use on the home screen instead of the app drawer, so I could see that being a point of frustration when you actually want to search whenever you swipe to the drawer.

It should definitely be an option for folks in your circumstance.

pesanze•

yeah app drawer vs app on the home screen it's another thing I cannot understand. If you're willing to enlight me, you're more than welcome to do so!

Well, that's the beauty of Android and it's launcher choices; you can pick any of probably about a hundred launchers that fit your style.

The idea behind the app drawer is kinda the same idea as using a desktop/laptop. You've got your most used apps on the desktop, while the rest are maintained in the start menu (app drawer) for just-in-case scenarios.

I keep all of the apps I use on a daily basis on my home screen (single screen, because I don't like having multiple pages on my home), usually sorted into folders so that they only take up the bottom two rows (this way I can reach any of my daily apps with one hand). Then I use the app drawer for one-off apps, like My Files, or T-Mobile, or any other apps that i definitely won't use daily (and might only use once a week or so).

2
pesanze•

I understand, thank you. Might try that. I don't like pages either

One of my favorite things about Action Launcher is that it automatically removes apps from the app drawer if you place them on the homework. It boggles my mind so much that this isn't standard behavior in all options because it makes no sense to have the app drawer be cluttered by duplicate shortcuts that have been placed on the home screen.

1
corkyrooroo•

You can make it do that with the Nova Launcher.

7
jdp111•

What's a Finder?

4
Jaerba•

Samsung called their app drawer Finder.

It's a little confusing because

  • It implies the main purpose is for searching, even though it's the same as all other previous app drawers with a search bar

  • Finder is already a Mac thing.

2
SuperCaptainMan•

Nova Launcher

1
Rattus375•

If you use Nova launcher you can configure it so that a down swipe opens search and an up swipe opens the app drawer

1
ScruffTheJanitor•

That would be hated by almost all android users. Unless you have hundreds of apps it's faster to find by scrolling than searching.

1
johnwayne2413•

Remap bixby to go back. 100000x better!

5
FickleSea•

Besides opening apps, what other options are there?

2
TMonahan2424•

Just about anything in your settings. Bixby is great at controlling settings deep in your phone and you can assign any command to the button. You can use it to toggle wifi or bluetooth, turn on night mode, pull down the notification bar, etc.

2
Jaerba•

You can also remap it to the Google Now/search button.

You need Tasker (which costs $2.99), but several people have published .APKs from Tasker that you can download and install. It'll then show up in the Bixby remapping options.

1
i7iceguy•

Get Nova Launcher.. install sesame add-on. You can swipe up to go to home screen, you can swipe down to start a global search with sesame. Install One Hand Operation - swipe straight to go back - up for recent - down for prev app. This should encompass all of iOS gestures :)

9646gt•

Omg thank you for this. I was using an app called Fluid Gestures, but this is a much more minimal approach. I've used Android for years and this was something I have always missed.

2
sweteg•

And it's more advanced and customizable than anything ios has left.

1
Hawk30•

this is what I was looking for

1
jmh1503•

You sir are a life savor, with some configuration now this is amazing.

1
WhaaaBangBam•

Honestly. The back button will eventually allow you to do more. You can change its position to be more comfortable.

1
Bghost33•

How so? What else can it do?

1
WhaaaBangBam•

A lot of times you can undo simple functions instead of a whole page or without undoing more than intended. As well as close tabs, or Google something from reddit while browsing reddit. If you open the new post then hit back, you'll go back to where you were originally on reddit.

It's just a little more versatile as in it doesnt strictly take you back.

Got this installed yesterday. I have suffered for 2 years with the S8 not knowing something like this existed. The main thing I missed about my iPhone was swiping.

1

I did this day one and it really made the transition so much smoother.

1

Guys.. try "pie control" from play store for navigation. This app is a must have for big screen phones..

1
grumpynlovinit•

Oh man this is brilliant. I switch all the time from iOS to android (using an s10e right now while iPhone xs sits on a shelf) and I always miss the swipe to go back gesture on android. This app makes it better than iOS, I can swipe from either side!! Thanks.

1
Andre11x•

There's an app called Edge Gestures that should solve this for you

1
HelperBot_OP•

That's paid tho

1
Andre11x•

If you don't want to pay the $2 you can get the Google Rewards app that sends you surveys to answer for Google Play credit. I haven't paid for an app in years and I have about $20 in credit.

1
Mrwackawacka•

Any good podcast apps? Google podcasts sucks in comparison to Apple, no auto download/delete or even sorting episodes from oldest to newest.

1
HelperBot_OP•

I use Spotify

1
Mrwackawacka•

No auto download though

1
ricafortcharls•

Im using oneplus is it possible to get this?

1
ChilliWithFries•

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how does this improve from using the gesture mode on the S10?

The three navigation buttons are now swipe gestures and I quite enjoy it.

I thought the one hand operation + is pretty cool but I'm not sure what keys I should utilise for it. The back key I will use the default swipe from bottom right for now.

Any suggestions or recommendations for the side gestures?

It's probably more useful for certain people during one handed use, so that they don't have to reach all the way to the bottom of the screen. I definitely wouldn't use it over the conventional nav bar, but I'm positive it'd be useful for plenty of other people.
