Variations on the hamburger icon - Thoughts?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I've recently noticed quite a few sites using variations on the hamburger for their menu icon.

e.g. https://www.visualsoldiers.com/

Just wondering if anyone has any interesting thoughts and/or strong opinions on the topic, like appropriateness, etc.

Personally, I found the usage in the above example a bit distracting—it might have been the 2nd or 3rd thing I noticed when the site loaded, and I don't think it really adds any value. It also seems a bit counter-intuitive, since I assume the point of a hamburger is to say, "The menu is here if you need it", and keep the focus on the core content and actions you want the visitor to perform.

Its idiotic.

Not only are they needlessly hiding one of the most important elements on a website, the navigation,

they also decided to needlessly obfuscate the way visitors can find it.

One of the very first things anyone who learns about webdesign learns, is the concept of "mystery meat navigation".

These people either have no education, or slept right trough it.

Its amateur-hour.

Its sad.

I upvoted you. I completely agree. I'd also like to add that any substantive navigation on mobile is very space-constrained.

I am also annoyed by what they are doing with my cursor. Is it, like, scrolling away when I scroll??

Yeah, the "circular cursor with non-default changes when it interacts with elements" is another trend I've noticed.

I've yet to see a usage where it was necessary, let alone made sense in terms of visual identity, UVP, etc.

And it's always laggy.

I'm not a fan of having to click a button in order to see the nav menu. You can't get away from it though. I think it should be obvious to the user, not "WTF is this" like in the example.

That scrolling with the background color... Yuck. On mobile it is terrible.

Hamburger menus by themselves are already bad enough, but fading it out completely as soon as you scroll down is a new low.

Not to mention that (at least for me), ~50% of the icon itself isn't clickable...only the center.

Wow. A lot of salt in the comments for what is a perfectly fine design. Sure, the standard hamburger is the most recognizable but this does not obscure it that much. You can easily tell that it’s a menu icon. They are just adding some flavor.
