What's wrong with people?

So, along with the "House husband" thread waaaaay down in the bowls of it, I made a comment, to clarify something, and this was the evil spawn that happened. Did I say something wrong? Or are these people really great examples of reddit assholes? This was the most interesting reply I'm not having a bitch about it, because I know what happens when I can't help but say something. I just want to confirm that I didn't say something that was wrong.

What you said wasn't wrong, and what he said wasn't necessarily wrong either.

You're arguing with a very hard core libertarian, who sees the world in a very black and white way. I had a roommate like that in college. He believed that everything needs to be determined by "the market".

It really felt like this person wasn't really backing their points strongly though. Maybe I didn't see it clearly. I just don't understand the last comment they made to me. Not sure how I confirmed their vague, and stereotypical assumptions in the previous post.

Sometimes, all you can do is sigh, ignore it and hope that they're 17 and just found Ayn Rand. Beyond that, there's really very little to be said to people who see things in black and white, especially over the internet.

That was my roommate in college!

or else i'm wrong and i'll see you in a future society where everyone is a slut

I can tell that this guy hasn't been to Sweden. And I say that as a proud, slutty Swede.

Yea, but the rest of the sentence totally confused me. "Everyone is a slut... no one gets pregnant"? what? Makes no sense :P

I think he is trying to say that slut-shaming is good for women because it decreases the risk of them getting pregnant. Thats a factual wrong though. There are about the same amount of teenage pregnancies and abortions in the US and Sweden despite us having much lesser taboo on casual sex.

He probably talks diffusely like this though because he doesn't really have a very good grip on any facts.

Maybe, but I definitely agree with the bit about having a grip on facts part.

My argument was that it's cultural, and if culture can change, by people changing their attitudes in the right ways. Telling someone not to do something, and making them feel bad about it, is only going to make them do it more, and hate you the whole time they're doing it.

Answer: this is the Internet, where the assumed default is white, male, and sexless.

Oh, and this.

There's a reason most of these men are sexless :P

I think males are getting sick of being forced to treat women a certain way, instead of being able to make up their own minds. Society is now constantly being bombarded with messages that women should be treated equally, but because of the long standing inequal treatment, this special effort feels like special treatment. People want to be able to make up their own minds when it comes to the things they get to make decisions on, but the fact of the matter is, most people can't make fair decisions because they are unknowningly being influenced by their own personal biases.

AnnaRKeyOP•

Are we really forcing them? Are you saying they want to treat us how we've been treated in the past? I don't think asking for more fairness, and trying to educate people, and open them to what might be beyond their own thought processes is doing any forcing. No one is saying they have to do so, but a lot of people are pushing the topic, because there's factual evidence of inequality in places where it does not make logical sense. Simply because we differ in genders, and that may bring limitations, traditions and non-physical social roles are slowly dissolving, but the same discrimination is there.

How are people with racism? What about other forms of gender discrimination, like trans-gendered or trans-sexual people? Are people sick of having to deal with gay people wanting equal marriage rights?

MyssX•

Nah I'm not saying they want to treat us like they did in the past. I am saying the attention that this topic is creating is probably making them feel hostile.

As an example, imagine you have two children. You treat them in what you think is a fair and relatively equal way. But then you start being bombarded with people telling you to make sure that your second child is absolutely not discriminated against. You read about it everywhere. People are angry and aggressively telling you must be fair to both children, and they watch you like a hawk to make sure you do etc etc. I think this attention is making even the fairest of people say "fuck off I will treat my children how I deem fit, based on my own experience and judgement".

So my point is that I don't think people are not supporting the equality agenda, I think they are sick to death of being told they must do it, if that makes sense? I have male friends who consider me their equal, but they are noticeably fed up with being told they have to treat everyone equally, even to the point where they feel they have to treat undeserving females equally (in the workplace).

I see what you mean. I agree with you, and that makes a lot of sense.

What's wrong with people?

Honestly I don't see a lot wrong with this. I see a discussion, which is what forums are all about. One commenter got rude, but I've seen (him, I assume) around enough to know that he's always like that. That wouldn't stop me from debating him, but it would make me come at the debate from a more detached perspective since I would know my buttons were going to get pushed.
