Did Lenovo just support Thunderbolt 3 on the Legion y530?

On March 26th, Lenovo made a BIOS update available, version 8JCN50WW.

When going into the advanced BIOS settings, there's an option to enable 'Discrete Tunderbolt(TM) Support'. When enabled, there's a bunch of other options. I enabled some of them, but I'm not an expert at this and would rather not enable things of which I don't know the use case. After a restart, it's clear that something changed about the port, but I don't know if it's for the better since I can no longer connect an external screen to the USB-C port. Also, when the Thunderbolt option is enabled in BIOS, a yellow triangle appears next to the default graphics card (GTX 1050 for me) and it seems to stop working. I installed the y740 thunderbolt 3 drivers, but I have no Thunderbolt 3 devices to check if anything changed.

Could this mean that the y530 supports Thunderbolt 3? The USB-C port is the only connection without an icon above it and some speculate that it might be because it is a Thunderbolt 3 capable port, but wasn't enabled at launch. I can't seem to find out which component was used for the USB-C connection, but it might be the same as the y730 which is Thunderbolt 3-enabled by default.

Here's some pictures of the BIOS options (apologies for the quality): https://imgur.com/a/T5UKWMv

EDIT: After doing some more digging, I may have a possible explanation. This article reviews USB-C speeds on different laptops. There's a clear distinction between the laptops with normal USB capabilities and the Thunderbolt 3 ports. Except one: the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro laptop, which has an Intel “Alpine Ridge” Thunderbolt 3 chip but has the Thunderbolt 3 capabilities disabled. What remains is a high-speed USB connection through the USB-C port, just like the one found in the Lenovo Legion y530. If the Legion y530 has a similar chip, it could mean this BIOS update unlocks the Thunderbolt 3 capabilities of that chip.

Hey,i'd like to ask about something unrelated but I need help, did you updated your y530 to latest windows update and geforce updates? Do you got blurness some applications , games or even right clicking on a application running in the background has a blurry menu?, bought mine yesterday and facing that kind of problem, you can try (CPUID hwmonitor) and compare

I haven't experienced anything like that. I suggest searching around to see if other have this issue aswell, but it sounds to me like you have got a defective unit. Warranty should cover that.

So no blur any program what so ever using 125% display scaling?

If you experience no blurring at 100%, and only see it happen at 125% or something other than 100%. Then it's the windows 10 scaling issue. Nothing Lenovo can fix. There are a few fixes available, try searching for Windows 10 DPI fix.

How did you get access to advanced settings in your bios? I don't have them

Fn + Tab, Fn + ASDFGH, Fn + O, F10 (Yes)

While in the bios, you need to do the following steps exactly:

  1. Press Fn + Tab
  2. Press Fn + ASDFGH (All at the same time)
  3. Press Fn + O
  4. Press F10. This will prompt you to 'save and exit', select "Yes" and hit enter.

Now it will once again boot into the bios and the advanced settings will be there.

Doesn't seem to work on the y540, unfortunately

Hi, did you managed to test and confirm it's indeed a thunderbolt 3 port? Thanks

I had no thunderbolt 3 devices to test it with, so I couldn't.

I've just tested this on my new Y530. Unfortunately, it seems the machine does not have TB3 support.

With TB3 enabled in BIOS, and the W10 OS option set to 'Disable', `lspci` in Linux shows no Alpine Ridge or other Thunderbolt controller.

With TB3 enabled in BIOS, and the W10 OS option set to 'Enable + RTD3', the status is as above, but the nvidia GPU is also absent from lspci output.

That's unfortunate. I wonder why they would implement a setting for this in the bios then? At first I thought this was some sort of global update for laptops that might include TB3, but it seems this update is really just for the y530. Very weird.
