[PSA] Housing glitch is back. Here are a few things that might help you avoid losing your house...

[Discussion]

Let me start by saying this whole thing sounds like an issue where the server doesnt actually recognize you were in the house. Now I dont know why, and it is a pretty stupid bug, but there are ways to FORCE the server to 100% know you were in the house. I am going to be giving you a few tips here that you should try to do (at least ONE of them) every time you log in.

  1. After you enter your house, LEAVE your house (this is the easiest method, but I am really not sure it would trigger the server to know you were there in the first place, try the others if you can, but if this is all you can do make sure you do it).

  2. Interact with an item. Food, NPC, summoning bells, armoire, FC chest, blank partitions, aquariums, etc.

  3. Move, rotate, place, remove at least one furnishing in the house.

  4. Change the lighting level.

  5. Remodel the interior. Walls, lights, floor. Even if you change it back.

  6. Change tenant permissions, add a tenant, or remove a tenant.

  7. Change the house information. Description, name, and tags.

These methods should trip the trigger that shows the server that you have been in the house. If you do these and you still lose your house, well YoshiP must hate you or something.

Also, make sure to file bug reports with SE over at the OF. If you have been banned from the hugbox, then have someone file the report for you.

As someone who had a hell of a time finding a house on my world and finally managed to upgrade to a medium, all this talk about people losing their houses is a nightmare and you can bet your ass I will be doing these tips every time I log in.

It all boils down to forcing the server to acknowledge you are in the house. For some reason that is not happening and I suspect its because people just enter the house and leave the game.

edit: formatting.

Are we really going to pretend the demolition timer wasn't put back in place almost exactly 45 days ago, and believe there's a random "glitch" threatening to steal people's houses?

103
RenegadeExiledFSH•

in my defense, I go into my house every weekend, Saturday at 6pm PST, out of habit and fear of losing the plot, and I got the message last night when I went to check it to be safe

A lot of people aren't getting the bug, and are just misremembering their last check-in, but some of us really did have the scare

32
RazaroicBard, or something resembling one•

Yes, people are. They also pretend email filtering into spam doesn't exist too.

I noticed the "bug" disappeared until NA timers restarted..didn't come back when JP and EU timers did..interestig.

29
Kryomaani•

If the bug was real we'd have at least one case where a person who lost their house happens to have taken a screenshot of their catgirl in their fancy house setup within the past 45 days.

This bug is the bigfoot of XIV. People constantly claim it's real, it's common, it's happened to someone they know, but still there's not even a single remotely credible firsthand account of it happening to someone. How is that possible if this is as widespread as people claim it to be?

It's bullshit fearmongering. Move on, people.

23
axle69:uldah:•

Theres a post from a few days ago with screenshots of a guy who logged out while in his house the night before and got the notice when logging back in though?

9
ExKageKage Kiryuu•

The person you responded to was in that very thread.

2
axle69:uldah:•

Yeah just went back and saw that. Funny how on a thread with a screen shot of it happening and the OP explaining that he had gone in his house and logged out within 18 hours of logging back in and getting the message this guy gets no backup for this opinion but since this thread has none of that people are jumping to his aid in a hurray.

1†
Kryomaani•

That person got a message, they didn't have their house demolished. There's a very distinct difference. Yep, a message getting shown in error is scary, sure, but unless there's an actual effect, it's pointless to get all hysterical.

-2†
axle69:uldah:•

Okay but why act as though the warning means nothing? They got a warning despite having been in their house within the last day that the home would be demolished and that in and of itself is a bug. People being worried that a warning will actually be fulfilled is pretty normal.

8
Vahrei_Athus•

As of today, it's been exactly 45 days since autodemo resumed (4/22, launch of 4.57).

Along with that, someone's probably gonna claim their house got their house taken before then, when it says on the lodestone post:

  • When the Auto-Demolition Counter resumes it will resume from the time remaining as of the temporary suspension. (Excludes estates/lands where the demolition process has been canceled.)

I was being hypernervous about it previously, but it's definitely a bunch of snake oil salesmen nonsense.

20
syriquez•

Clearly it's just sheer coincidence as their oh-so-important house would never be something they'd so callously forget about! This "glitch" is a fucking boogeyman. It's not real. The sheer fucking coincidence of this bug allegedly occurring JUST AS IT HITS 45 DAYS SINCE DEMOLITION RESUMED would be astounding.

Just for the sake of amusement, I took a screenshot after visiting, entering, and changing one thing in each of the locations I have accessible to me. Personal house, FC house, and apartment I moved one retainer just slightly over from their original placements. In my shared house, I stole a bite of cake. I put a message in my chat with a date stamp for today that's visible in the screenshot. Also included was the Estate Timers dialog showing nothing except some FC crafting garbage, nothing to do with demolition. I've logged in multiple times over the last 45 days so I didn't have anything to begin with but I felt this was a good "reset" point for everything just as a sanity check.

Now, if I lose any of those plots, then there's a real glitch and boy, I'll be sure glad to report on it with actual evidence. Funny thing is I skimmed the threads on the OF regarding this alleged bug and as a shock to no one, there has yet to be a single shred of evidence.

15
derpiderpi•

That's the best part, yeah.

The same people who bitch and cry that they DESERVE a mansion and it's unfair how difficult it is to get a nice house, are the very same people who end up not even entering their house for over a month.

7
Daydreamer12•

How do you not go in for over a month? Shows how much you value it. I go in mine several times a week (sometimes everyday on any given week).

2
MagicGin•

It's because (non-fc) housing is more attractive in concept than practice. There's virtually no reason to actually go to your house unless you enjoy idling inside it for aesthetic/RP reasons, while if you want a social experience you just go to the FC house instead. Personal housing, as it was implemented, was a mistake. They should have just expanded the apartment system to fit the needs of the playerbase.

1
The_Grubby_One•

You wanna actually show that it's the same people and that they claim they deserve a mansion, or are you just trying to wave off criticism because you bought out an entire ward across multiple accounts?

-3†

1
iziksquirel[First] [Last] on [Server]•

My favorite are the people who “deserve” these plots and don’t put up a single piece of furniture in a 2 month period.

Like half of the houses I’ve ever seen, they’re either locked or completely empty.

Then they complain that it’s Demo’d despite never using it anyway

2
Clashdrew•

I thought the 45 days was tomorrow? I’ve always been bad at math though . . .

7
Sauvaterre•

Tomorrow is when people would start actually losing their plots. You get warnings before that happens though.

12
Bolaumius•

Do you know at what time (EST) that will start happening?

3
Yenaro:ast:•

4am est I believe

3
zubenel•

If you're worried about it, go to Duty > Timers > Estate, and you can see if you're schedule for demolition sometime in the next 14 days. No need for any of the steps you listed (which still leaves it up in the error as to whether your entry "took" or not).

However, as mentioned a few posts below, there's been no evidence this glitch is ACTUALLY occurring, and at this point it's much more likely human error than a bug.

Besides chat logs showing proof, a screenshot of someone inside their house with the timer window open showing demolition is still pending would also establish the glitch is real.

38
guys_send_buttpicsSCH•

*leaves it up in the air, not error

1
zubenel•

haha whoops that was a typo, but also a really good candidate for r/boneappletea

2
FoxxyRin:auto1: donut :auto2:•

There has still yet to be sufficient proof (timestamps, etc) of this and it has been investigated by mods/devs before and determined that nothing is wrong. I'm pretty sure people are just fear mongering and trying to blame a "broken feature" to make up for their own forgetfulness. If you actually use your house it wouldn't ever come close to being auto demo'd anyway. If your house was that close to being demo'd and you went on with the purpose of making sure the timer reset, you would likely check that the timer was gone, too, which means you would notice immediately if it didn't trigger, not days later when it's too late.

35
Illadelphian•

Yea I really agree with this, it's always just been someone talking about it happening with no proof, not to say it's impossible but occams razor tells me it's probably more likely that it's people forgetting/losing track of time.

13
ExKageKage Kiryuu•

This person says that the night before the post they logged out while inside the house and the next day they walk in and get the message saying the timer stopped. https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/bx9dxp/housing_demolish_bug_glitch_is_back/

Meaning: The timer should have been stopped at least the night prior as they went into and logged out while inside the house.

7
TomeofDust•

What proof would people have if they weren't expecting to run into an issue? Most people aren't taking a timestamped screenshot while holding up the daily copy of the Mythril Eye every time they enter their house.

5
FoxxyRin:auto1: donut :auto2:•

You can pull up timestamped chat logs from log files. Everyone always refuses to do this, however.

4†
o-skadi-o:btn:•

Sorry but you can't do this on PS4 tho

10
TomeofDust•

If you don't have your timestamps turned on will it show that? I'm not seeing any date information in my logs and I keep timestamps off because they're chat clutter.

2†
FoxxyRin:auto1: donut :auto2:•

My storage alt shows timestamps in their logs, and they have default UI with timestamps turned off.

4
Mavsolis•

How?

-2
FFSnipeOP:pld::drg::sch::min::crp::maelstrom:•

I honestly dont think it is fear mongering at this point. This was a pretty prominent issue before auto-demo was placed on hold.

Also, yes it was investigated by devs. and yes, they didnt find any problems. Well.... bear with me here... it wont show a problem with what the devs are looking at. It will show the devs that the user just didnt enter their house. even though they swear they did, on the devs end it shows they are lying even if they arent.

and the whole point I am trying to make is that sometimes the server isnt registering that you are in the house. so.... yea. theres that.

this could 100% be an issue that the devs havent looked into in detail. Sure, they can say they looked into by checking if someone has enetered a house, but if the server isnt registering they did, then the logs wont show any problems at all.

-8†
FoxxyRin:auto1: donut :auto2:•

Except there's never been actual proof that it was an issue. Every single case has been hearsay. Never once has anyone provided proper timestamped proof. There's literally log files that keep chat for days in your files, and yet EVERY SINGLE TIME these are asked for, the requests are completely ignored. There is a way to easily prove whether or not you ever entered your house. Plus there's always inconsistencies in the details between all these alleged issues. Some people say that the message showed up but the timer didn't trigger, some say they don't think the message ever came up, etc.

14
DinosaurAlert•

I’ll say that nobody would think to prove they had been in their house until after it was gone.

-4
FoxxyRin:auto1: donut :auto2:•

However, there's literally proof in your chat logs. If you went in your house, the log message should show up. The logs go back for days and are stored on your PC. If you're on console then sure, you can't check that. But if you're on PC you CAN check these files and ctrl+f "timer" and it will tell you clear as day if you entered or not, at least according to the game.

4
haafa•

And yet, if you last went inside your house, say, two weeks ago, those files aren't still going to be there.

Then what's left? A screenshot? FFXIV does write a timestamp in the screenshot filename. But filenames and metadata can be changed, and taking screenshots for something as routine as going in your house is frankly strange enough that I'd question a person more if they had screenshots than if they didn't. Who does that? Someone who knows they're going to need to prove it later.

So logs disappear and can be edited, screenshot timestamps can be forged. Even the presence of either or both doesn't rule out the possibility that a hoaxer manually relinquished their plot to watch the lulz as people freak out about a bug. There really is no proof except the fact that dozens of different people are confirming they're seeing auto-demo halt messages when they claim they were definitely inside their house within the last week/month.

I don't get it. You have nothing to gain by being so combative. If there's an issue, it needs to be out in the open. If there's not an issue, then... some people are needlessly a little more diligent about going in their house...? Does that hurt you in some way that you need to come in here and BUT TEH CHAT LOGZ?

If you don't like that this is a topic of discussion, downvote the topic and move on with your life....

-4
Ana_Nuann•

Fearmongering is a bad thing. Not something to turn a blind eye to. If people are going to make claims, they need to prove those claims.

4
FFSnipeOP:pld::drg::sch::min::crp::maelstrom:•

I will look at it from your perspective for a second here

where are the log files stored? are the logs timestamped if you dont have timestamps on in chat? how far back do the logs go?

-6
FoxxyRin:auto1: donut :auto2:•

They're in your character folder. And they go back quite a bit. I have FC chat and Novice Network always talking and mine go back for ~2 days, but I do think there's an upper limit on length of the file, however. And I just double checked my storage alt (default UI settings, no timestamps) to confirm, and yes, the logs show timestamps in the file.

8
Lucikrux:16brdm:•

Mhm. I've never seen any real evidence for this, as someone else has said. Ever since I got my house, I have had little to no issues with the server thinking I'm not using my house. I think there's just a few people who don't go to their house often, panic and realize it's about to be demolished, and they make up stories to try to stop the timer.

14
MadeByHideoForHideoBLM•

3 year home owner here, actively playing always. Take a guess if i encountered any "housing demo glitch"? Yup, never had a single issue for 3 whole years.

9
madhatterdisease:gridania:Eclair Xysha•

.... This is a glitch...? How?

I've been doing at least one of those every once in a while but was not even told it's a glitch. I'm pretty sure the dev team and YoshiP even said as long as you interact with your house some how.... You're good??

7
Kryomaani•

It's not a glitch. This is what happens:

  1. People forget to visit their house

  2. 45 days pass and their house get demolished and people lose a multimillion gil house

  3. The anger and denial sets in: "This isn't possible! I must have visited the house in the past month! This must be a bug!"

So, if you don't do step 1, you have nothing to worry about.

I find it at least somewhat hilarious that this "bug" resurfaces just as ~45 days have passed after the demolition timer was reinstated. What a coincidence!

25
FFSnipeOP:pld::drg::sch::min::crp::maelstrom:•

everyone takes it as as long as you enter your house, that counts as interacting with it.

5
madhatterdisease:gridania:Eclair Xysha•

Huh... That's strange... Cuz I never had warning emails. All i did was go in and out of my house

6
FFSnipeOP:pld::drg::sch::min::crp::maelstrom:•

there have been quite a few posts in the past about people just entering their house and it still didnt kick off the auto demolish timer. and there was one recently again.

but i dunno. im just trying to be helpful is all. my list is more interacting with your house than just entering it.

2†
haafa•

Entering your house does absolutely count as interacting with it. That's why entering your house clears the demo message.

The glitch doesn't come from going in your house but not doing stuff. The glitch comes from the system somehow overwriting your "last entered" date with false information.

The tips in your OP are, respectfully, superstition. Entering a house and logging out inside it without having touched anything does work almost every time for almost everyone. We can't pin down what's causing the time to overwrite as it is.

Of course, there's no harm in doing these little rituals as well if they lessen your anxiety! :) I have a tiny one of my own, I just make sure I've spent at least ten seconds inside before I log out.

4
LevolpehhHealer•

But this is 100% true. Just entering is enough to stop demolition as I've done this numerous times ._.

1
purple-ocelot•

Hey guys, just wanted to check in with an update that just happened about 10 minutes ago. I saw the thread earlier about this bug and told my friend today about going into his house to check his timer. He went in and saw the demo cancelled message. We are active and play every day but he didn't remember the last time he actually entered the house. I am a tenant on the house and entered an hour earlier and it didn't clear it, it must be the owner that enters the house.

I told him to check his email after this happened and sure enough, buried under a lot of other stuff was an email dated 6/2 about the demolition. In 9 days were were going to lose our medium in lavender and we both didn't have a clue. So I definitely want to thank the people who posted these posts, because it was our first house and it meant a lot to keep it. I doubt we would have caught it in the next 9 days as he has no reason to enter his house usually.

I believe this is not a bug. He got the email and now that he thinks about it, he has not been in the ACTUAL house for a long time. Everyone should be entering their house now that the demo timer is back on, because I guarantee many people don't really have the last time they entered their house memorized when there is so many things to do to get ready for expansion. Hope this helps.

Perhaps I missed it but I didn’t get a notification via email when the timer was turned back on.

Hey guys I didn't want to make a whole new topic to ask these two simple questions, but:

  1. I FINALLY managed to get a house. It's a small but I'll take it! I'm so happy. Seeing as all I had before was an apartment, I placed pretty much all of my stuff in there. Is there any way to move that stuff like the orchestrion, summoning bell, etc from my apartment to my new house without having to buy everything again?

  2. if I put down a mini aetheryte, can I teleport directly to my house from a mini aetheryte within the housing district? What I mean is, I'm kinda far from a market board, can I get to the market board and then hit the aetheryte next to it to zip back to my house?

Bonus) Does squenix not check for people using 3rd party software to spam the purchase land button? I lost a house to a guy last night who, I swear, I could see his head moving towards the placard, check it, return to normal, and then back to the placard WAY more quickly than I could click, and I got into a REALLY fast rhythm of clicks to where I didn't think anyone could beat me. I didn't report him because it was late at night and I was exhausted with eye strain, but is that the only way to get squenix to ban people like that?

Thank you !!

2
AtosenBard•
  1. Most stuff can be simply picked up into your inventory and carried over to the house, but there's no convenient transfer system for furnishings, I'm afraid.

  2. Mini aetherytes don't interface with the normal aethernet. They only add a destination for your Teleport spell.

  • It hasn't been a problem until recently (because this purchase system was only implemented fairly recently, like, within the past 12-18 months, I don't remember the exact date);
  • it's only a problem on certain servers (NA players like to cluster more than JP players do);
  • it might cease being a problem soon (NA auto-demolish was turned off for like 6 months, as a kind gesture towards hurricane victims, which meant the housing supply dried up);
  • and they don't seem to have much ability to auto-detect 3rd party software to begin with.

So no, unfortunately they definitely won't have a specific system for auto-detecting house spammers.

They do have a task force for manually checking potential cheaters, so you could try reporting them, but I don't know if you'll have much luck.

3
Hlicat•

You can spam numpad 0, which is the interact button. So might not necessarily have been a 3rd party program.

2
ArtanisxBLM•

What housing glitch?!

1†
Rachquitter•

I recently acquired a house and am new to the game, how does this "auto-demo" work? And how can you check to see your timer or whatever... Not like I'm worried I afk there all the time anyways.

1
haafa•

If you don't go in your house for 45 days, your house goes poof in what we call an auto-demolish.

Starting from day 31, you get a notice in the "Estate" tab of your timers window (ctrl-U on PC) that shows you the time and date of your impending poof. You get an email warning on day 35 and again on day 42. Entering your house (not just going in the yard) resets the clock, giving you another 45 days.

Assuming the dozens of different people who have reported demo glitches aren't lying, the issues are:

  1. The email doesn't always send, or it's sent inaccurately. Sometimes this is a case of a spam folder (the headers on housing emails are different, supposedly) but other times people are insistent they were never received in any folder, spam included. Others have reported getting demo emails for plots they don't own and have never owned - one assumes the owner that's actually on that plot didn't get the email.
  2. The "last entered" time can be suddenly wrong. This post here was created in response to someone who said they were INSIDE their house 18 hours prior, and the next day their house was marked for demolition as if they hadn't entered in over a month.
  3. The timer doesn't always reset upon entry. I remember one particularly frantic poster on OF with screenshots of the timer window showing auto-demo still active from the inside of her house. It went on for days; I'm not sure how (or whether) that one resolved.

If your house does get demolished, a resident caretaker holds your belongings and 80% of the plot purchase price for you for either 30 or 35 days (I forgot which), although there have been scattered reports of belongings disappearing from the caretaker early as well.

Apartments never demolish.

5
Kajitani-EizanWyssberk Kajitani @ Behemoth•

a resident caretaker holds your belongings

Not sure if you know the answer to this question, but I thought I'd ask... how does this work, exactly? I don't exactly have like 400 free inventory slots for house furnishings + storage. How do I go about reclaiming all those items? Pay S-E for extra retainers for their screw-up and go back and forth between the caretaker and summoning bell manually moving 400 items?

1
haafa•

Sorry, I don't know, I've never let a house time out. Hopefully someone else can answer you! I'm curious as well.

I'm sure you have to take the items to the retainer yourself, but I'm not sure if you get to pick from a list of what to get back or if it just mass-dumps it all in your inventory or what....

The saddlebag might help a little at least.

1
kaciezrMCH•

Basically yes. After I took a break, I decided I wanted to move my main to my alt's server, so I let my house demolish, and bought another retainer so that I had space for all my furnishings.

1
Darkbuilderx:pld2::drk2::gun2:•

One thing you could do is buy an apartment for 300k, place as many things as possible, then put the remainder in the housing storage. It should be enough to get stuff fitting into your 2 retainers , inventory & chocobag.

1
EhrandRDM•

Since there's a limited amount of house plot. Every plot/house has a auto-demolition timer. This is to prevent people that don't use them or that no longer play the game to hold on plot without using them.

The timer is 45 days of not entering your house and the timer reset every time you enter you own house. So basically if you enter your house everyday, the timer should always been 45 days from that moment.

If after 45 days, you never entered your house (this also goes for FC house, if no members of the FC entered it), your house gets automatically demolish and returns on the market to be bought by others. Every pieces of furnishings that you had in your house will be sent to an NPC (forgot the name) to be retrieve and you get back 80% of the price paid for the estate grounds.

When there's 15 days left on your auto-demo timer, it will show in your timer window and show you how long you have until demolish.( timer -> estate) SE is also suppose to sent you email warning your that your house will soon be demolish if not entered before then.

So all you have to do is enter your house and it will reset the auto demolish and you are good to go for another 45days. This timer shouldn't be a problem if you play regularly and use your house regularly.

3
CWHITTY14:fcchoco2: :gun2: :mch2:•

I've had my house for just shy of 35 days now. I regularly enter before I log every day. I have yet to see a demo timer or get an email.

1
Aimuari•

I can 1000% confirm this is happening.

I got the demolition message two days ago, and realized that despite having entered my house weekly, I haven't been doing any of those tips. Two days ago I interacted with my retainer bell.

Wow, to think that if I hadn't done that, my house would have demolished tomorrow.

-2†
FFSnipeOP:pld::drg::sch::min::crp::maelstrom:•

maybe you can post some of your chat logs since that is what people are really wanting to see for proof.

dates and times before 2 days ago where you entered the house and then the message you received 2 days ago as well.

3
Aimuari•

Damn, I shouldv'e took a screenshot then. I wonder if I we have chat logs auto stored anywhere?

I don't think method 1 about exiting your house works. In the past 44 days since demolition restarted, my periodic visits inside the house included teleporting out or exiting for duty finder, and that didn't seem to stop demolition.

It was only until I used my retainer bell that I got the system message that demolition stopped and I was like wtf?

I checked my email and spam just now and found no emails about it, so that's a shitty notice system.

-3
FFSnipeOP:pld::drg::sch::min::crp::maelstrom:•

I wonder if I we have chat logs auto stored anywhere?

on PC yes

C:\Users\YourNameHere\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn\FFXIV_CharacterNumber\log

that should be the default folder. just make sure you are in the correct character folder.

2
ExKageKage Kiryuu•

Have you ever actually taken a look at these logs stored locally? They're stored in a way someone would need to parse through it and re-write it.

The game also re-writes through these logs in a nonsensical way that lay people won't be able to just open it and read it. For example this is from my 00000 log from just after I logged out today. I had just finished Lakshmi normal mode. In this same file, at the bottom of the screencapture you can see what is essentially when I RP'd with people when I was on Balmung YEARS ago. This is stuff at the bottom of my screen from one of my logs saved for June 6 2019. These people are a) On crystal and B) they're from years ago. Plus, there aren't any actual timestamps in it.

2
Aimuari•

Also how do I know which character folder to check? There's like 20.

1
Aimuari•

There are like thousands of log files in there and they don't open when I double click them...
