the most hilarious is the 'new feminist agenda' in gaming because women now exist in games, like women haven't existed for the last 200,000 years.

It's only political when it makes them uncomfortable.

Also, acknowledging that gay people/women/asexual/trans/etc people exist is NOT political. You only make it political if your politics don’t want to acknowledge these people are real (aka the majority of the fucking population). I can’t stand when people say that sort of thing, but it also humors me because it means they are admitting republicanism is built on intolerance

character rolls

like the stereotype that the female character is the healer because nurturing is more of a feminine trait? I can speak of this bias because for years I thought tanking roles were just for men and now I'm a tank who has gotten over that unspoken bias.

Also Mount And Blade was first released in 2008.

Not only can you play as female, you also get to live (some) realities of being female - creepy NPCs hitting on you, a much slower start because no-one trusts you. The game essentially tells you that choosing to play as a woman makes the game harder.

2008 folks. It’s not new

52
SaltyFresh•

Holy fuck that’s hilarious. But would also make people whine about just wanting to get on with the game and nonsensically blame it on the female character just like they do in real life, willfully missing the fucking point.

32
Valkryir•

YES! M&B is my jam. I will never not play the badass warrior woman queen route starting from low born peasant. It is really interesting how they handled women characters. Early on Kings will not even vassal you cause they are afraid thier lords will think they got vagina-bewitched.

However women gain renown much faster just because they are such an aberration to the norm. (News that a woman in full plate just destroyed everyone in a tourney moves fast) It is amusing that later game the entire romance mechanics are bypassed. There us no winning over the lady quests.

You are told straight up that most lords will not be interested in you cause you're not the "ideal women". BUT Just rock up to a feast, talk to every lord with the dialogue option I like to interpret as "Hey wanna bone ?" Until someone says yes. Congrats now engaged.

23
ElephantTeeth•

I modded a romantic interest — there’s a not-entirely-easy work-around where you can have a companion, vassal him, and then marry him. It only works as a female character.

Gods I love Mount & Blade. The misogyny is even an adjustable setting, so you can play in normal mode or in feminist utopia mode, where your character is treated with the same respect as a man.

What I also don't get: Didn't they play Pokemon? You could be a woman there from silver/gold up. Didn't they play Final Fantasy? Plenty of girls in there as well. There are a few more examples there that won't come to mind now because it's too fucking early.

Lara Croft in Tomb Raider and Regina from Dino Crisis were two of my favourite characters in games growing up. Of course as a kid I didn't notice how heavily sexualised they were. But it was still cool to be able to play as a woman in games. Also Coco from Crash Bandicoot although she was a supporting character.

My ex skipped FFX2 even though it was an amazing game and FFX was what we had in common Spiris Within is one of my favorite movies with a female lead. I assume he only had selective love of Final Fantasy. Skipped FFX2 and Spirits Within because it had female leads. Oddly enough he was a huge fan of FFXI he then proceeded to play every other FF game and I noticed all the others had a male lead and female party members. it's hard not to put two and two together.

The post is referring to a game called Cyberpunk, by a company called CDPR. CDPR skyrocketed to fame with their previous game called the Witcher 3, often considered one of the best games of all time.

The core of the witcher 3 was that you played as a marginalised minority helping other minorities and women against oppressive societies and regimes and fought monsters and stuff.

Naturally the "gamers rise up" crowd missed the message and are now complaining that its showing up in their new game as well.

118

But you see, in Witcher 1, you could bang hot chicks to collect sex cards with titties on them. A portion of the fanbase never realized that CDPR grew up after that.

Wait for real? Is it most of the community or like a small group because most gamers don't care if you can play both genders.

1
Child_of_atom21•

It wasn't about both genders. The game allows you to mix and match Male features (voice, facial/body structure etc) on females and vice versa, allowing a lot of people to play trans characters if they wish to. For some reason its pissing some basement dwellers off.

There's a lot of people who are deeply upset at the mere possibility that fans have been floating that Zelda might be a playable character in the sequel to Breath of the Wild.

It hasn't been announced or anything, but people have really really strong opinions on even the idea of it.

I'm a fan of the Legend of Zelda generally, so I've been paying attention to the news about it, but it's really disheartening that so many people are tied to the notion that she can't be playable because it would "wreck" the game.

92
societymethodOPI'm on a whiskey diet. I've lost three days already.•

Zelda was a fighter option in Smash Brothers and she was my favorite, the only thing I can see being an issue with her being a playable character 1) takes away the structure that she's a damsel in distress 2) she's no longer a prize to be won 3) some fans can't stand the idea of playing as anyone but Link.

63
Child_of_atom21•

Zelda would be an insane character to play, and I've always hoped for a Zelda game where both her and Link are playable. They could have unique abilities and could make dungeons much more complex and challenging and innovative.

Plus Zelda is hardly a damsel in distress a lot of the time, from Sheik in OoT to how Zelda in TP was legit cooler than Link.

Didn't Spirit Tracks have Zelda follow you around as a spirit, where you could control her separately from Link and possess armor suits and other things to solve puzzles?

Also, what if Zelda isn’t just being held in a tower the whole time link is playing through, but she’s active. Maybe she escapes and gets caught again because she is wearing a stupid fucking dress that won’t let her move or maybe she’s getting in good with the help to get them to bring her better food or the million other things women do every day that men don’t notice.

I don’t play Zelda, so I’m sorry if this comes off ignorant

5
FencingFemmeFataleWhy is a bra singular and panties plural?•

Nah, you’re right. Zelda definitely isn’t just a damsel in distress. Link is the only one who can defeat Ganon using the Master Sword, but Zelda is the only one with the power to banish him from existence until his next reincarnation. That’s why he keeps going after her.

In BOTW, Link was fatally wounded and Zelda used her power to hold Ganon back for 100 years while waiting for him to recover.

9

In Ocarina of Time, Link is often helped by a mysterious man named Sheik.

When I first bought Zelda I thought it was her story. Link is suitably androgynous and Zelda is the name of the game, right? That little blonde girl is obviously Zelda and she’s gonna go kick some butt. Alas, ‘‘twas link. I’ve been waiting since then to play Zelda.

I think sometimes They’re worried about other people making the choice and having to interact with them on the daily, now having to face their refusal to learn about themselves and become self aware every day causing more and more anger and resentment and self hatred to build. They want choices, they’re just too scared to say yes and they don’t want you to either cuz that means they’re missing out. It’s really very sad.

10
Brrrritos•

I also love when they argue against female characters because they're not "realistic" in the context of the game, as if they've ever cared about realism in a medium based so much on fantasy anyway.

23

From the Crusades to WWII, there have been women or afab persons participating in war. Some openly as women, some disguised, and some discovering who they were while ‘disguised’.

12
Brrrritos•

My favorites are the female guerrillas of Latin American insurgencies.

10
spyridonya•

Russian ladies also do not take shit from the Fatherland. Hell, a lot of the British ladies and French ladies hid out with the land armies during WWI and there's a history of a few afab people having a CAREER in the British Navy. Noble ladies learned how to fight during the Crusades in the case their husbands fell in battle. It happened enough that the Vatican had fits and the Muslims used it for propaganda until their ladies started to fight.

Yes, it's not common but not unheard of and could be a great element to add in games if the technology is there. No, it wouldn't like Battlefield 5 but that's where the technology is now and I don't think BF5 is about stories.

It boils down to this: It's non-educational mass media and people who complain about historical accuracy actually don't care about it anything else and those who do should know better.

Oh, and while they're whining about woman fighting in WW2 is being historically inaccurate in BF5? BF5 erased Nazis involvement.

1

I'm skeptical of "they have the best outfit choices" as an excuse for why males have female characters because I play WoW and I know that's as a cover for "I can slutmog my female character and sexually objectify her" which doesn't win any brownie points. Having a scantily clad, big boob mod, blood elf/Draenei is not exactly progressive feminism.

there was a neckbeard in my guild a couple months back who bragged about having his Belf modded to be nude and have anime style big bouncy breasts... but he righteously claimed that didn't make him a pig he 'just really appreciates the female form' https://tenor.com/view/sure-ok-jennifer-lawrence-the-mocking-jay-the-hunger-games-gif-5471477

Depends on the game. It's highly prevalent in older games like WoW, especially Fantasy RPGs, but the industry is slowly growing up. Chainmail bikinis and boob plate are becoming less and less common, thankfully.

I totally understand that, and see where you're coming from. But when it comes playing a male or female, it's never really about what they look like, physically. I've been playing rdr2 and made my female character look like a badass bounty Hunter. She's also black. Not that it matters what she looks like, I just wanted to try something new. 😁

2
societymethodOPI'm on a whiskey diet. I've lost three days already.•

I've been playing games since 1988 and I personally care what characters look like and if they are male or female because up until the mid 2000's there was very little female representation in the games i played. The RDR games are very recent and it's true that the games since 2008 have been more progressive but half of my life has been spent only seeing myself as either Peach or Tomb Raider and knowing that I fit in neither category, one was a damsel in distress and the other was so heavily oversexualized and male dominated that there was no room for a female fanbase.

WoC representation in games should matter, you act like you are color blind to your own character in a nonchalant way but it should matter, seeing yourself in your WoC character is great and not something to downplay.

6
superscuba23I wanna make a joke about sodium, but Na..•
