Something from the archives of NZ TV - I think my argument is so powerful that it's not necessary to talk about it.

Imagine being that confident and that incompetent.

"I don't understand why using resources efficiently is important. Yes I am wearing a t-shirt advocating my support for a political party who core policy is that we should reduce government as much as possible because the private sector is more resource efficient."

Wow, I wonder what became of Rick.

I wonder more what happened to Oliver

Last I heard he was living in Te Atatu with his wife and kids.

He's a producer now, and getting a new house built for a magazine advertorial.

Good question, I was in 'Act on Campus' at when at university and then I stopped hanging out with Act about half way through my degree as I economically moved further to the left. Rick is now living in Auckland the last time I checked and some quick Googling it appears that he has become more Anarchist - he's a nice enough guy (on a personal basis) but he was really into his objectivism/Ayn Rand. As for the 'thinking' behind what Act on Campus did (the whole counter 'protest') - they saw the whole earth day and turning off the lights as an example of neo primitivism and that we should be embracing technological advancement. I look back at my Act years as my cringe years but that being said the experience allowed me to view things from the other side and learnt some lessons about internal party politics.

It certainly sounds like him. And he sounds like an anarcho capitalist in this video, which is only a step away from libertarianism (aka Act party).

I would say he has done this as an elaborate troll attempt, but I've met young Act members.

Best debating argument I’ve heard, ever. Might use that on my boss tomorrow and see what happens.

I bet you seven peanut slabs that Rick is a redditor

I think people are misunderstanding the kid. He's saying it's not necessary to talk about climate change because regardless of whether or not climate change is true, promoting earth hour will cause people to use less energy-efficient methods of lighting their home, such as candles instead of lights, etc., contrary to its desired outcome. Now you might think that's wrong or misguided for whatever reason, but you should grumble about what he is actually saying (or attempting to say).

I think his argument is based on a misconception, but I do like the point that we can probably overcome climate change with future technologies. I hardly ever hear that point, it's always about reducing usage and pulling away from technology. But of course, that's what the layperson needs to do - they can't combat climate change by actively creating solutions, so they need to try to keep the planet alive long enough to ensure someone else creates the solution.

Yes indeed I agree. This is this weird new trend where now you can be regarded as a "climate denier" - even if you believe in climate change. Now deniers sometimes include those who have different types of solutions in mind such as new technology. There was somebody on the other post that said anybody believing in global capitalism was also a denier!

we can probably overcome climate change with future technologies.

yes we "probably" can.

But right now we need to combat it using current technologies, while supporting the development of those future technologies, since they aren't going to just appear by magic. Because if we just sit back and wait for "future" technologies to save everyone, then the world will be in much worse shape, and civilization will have been destroyed in the meantime.

Uh, thanks for paraphrasing my post?

1
fitzroy95•

Yes, except that your comment was about using future technologies.

Except that we need to use current technologies, because those future ones may not arrive in time.

Yeah. To me, it feels pretty futile. Like I'll opt for less plastic, use my reusable bags, recycle, and so on, but until we're all ready to stop using elevators, cars, and - most importantly - airplanes, it seems to me we're fucked anyway.

I just don't really get how my green party obsessed friends are for some reason not into curtailing their overseas or domestic travel for the good of the planet. Until we're willing to make personal changes on that level, I don't see how we're going to get on top of the problem.

At least I make no bones about the fact that I don't care that much because I suspect what will happen will happen regardless.

That's actually become a bit of a thing in parts of the world recently, interestingly.

Climate isn't something that is 'going to happen.

'The location of the Biblical town of Sodom caught on fire during record temperatures. We are already at a level where the best literary equivalents to climate change are "punishments enacted by the Old Testament God."

This guy needs to be on the history 7 days segment one day, that would be gold!

Or maybe chain him up to the rocks with his face at the 1990 spring high water mark once a year for the next forty years and as the tide comes up he can tell us about the myth of climate change.

Seriously - what is he doing now?
