I love and hate Highmountain. It's a pretty zone inhabited by the third-best race, and it's probably one of Blizzard's best attempts at making a high-altitude, mountainous zone entirely traversable on foot while retaining the feel of actually being on a mountain. Which is also its biggest weakness, since vertical zones full of ledges you have to make detours around and caves that are fairly mazelike do not make for a fun world questing experience. Especially without flying.

My first death in legion came from the deciptively large fall on one of the mountains. I would proceed to die countless more times in similar fashion until flying was releases

Klony99•

That only ever happens to me if I'm on my druid. The habit of jumping and pressing flightform for coolness is just too strong.

That said, I main a Paladin and I skilled the 'ignore falldamage' trait...

My Warlock kept a Soulstone up in Highmountain for this very reason.

I just hated Highmountain to be honest. The questline was pretty good but the... map itself, was a killing machine. Also, doing even short travels would take a long time sometimes.

4
MrVeazey•

It needs more roads on its map to indicate where the passes and ascents are. Or elevation markings.

1
Sunaja•

That's why I have a love-hate relationship with any vertically challenging map in MMORPGs, and the reason I hated Tangled Depths in Guild Wars 2. Because the 2D minimap is so hopelessly overwhelmed with that level of verticality that at some point it just says "fuck it, figure it out on your own, I'm done".

1
MrVeazey•

That reminds me of the original Faultline map in City of Heroes: it was a neighborhood destroyed by a supervillain with a targeted earthquake, and sections of it were split all the way down to the water table. It was a "hazard zone" full of bigger groups of tougher enemies than "regular" parts of the city, and it was full of blind corners, sudden drops into box canyons where the only way out is through a mob of evil cultists or sewer monsters. That game had greater vertical mobility through travel powers, but even if you could fly it was a serious challenge to navigate.

It occurs to me that one solution would be to have multiple map layers that display based on your z-axis position. Like in Nazjatar, you'd see the map of the giant coral shelf if you were on or above it and you'd see the naga fortifications if you were below it. Sort of like how you get a special sub-map when you go into the tutorial areas of the starter zones.

High mountain was actually my favourite zone back in legion, I just absolutely loved it so much.

2
MaiLittlePwny•

Worst thing is verticle mazes aren't becoming easier they are actually getting worse with this problem.

Deepholm, and Storm Peaks got round it by the zone having flying anyway. They are beautiful fit their theme well and I loved playing in them.

Highmountain I didn't find too bad not great. The theme was amazing the scenery was goergeous as were the mobs. However some long travel times, the ultimately boring "how can I do it so it involves picking up as many quests and glidering to the perfect spot".

Then came Nasjatar and fuck me dead but ALL of my issues in that zone (other then lag doing big events) consisted of me being 5 meters away horizontally but "am I 10 meters above, or 20 metres below..... go up... FUCK NOW IM 30M BELOW". I also found that the colour scheme sort of made this worse as everything was on quite a tight colour pallette meaning it was just that little bit harder to differentiate paths from rock to rubble to grass. All in an incredibly tight area. (Not quite as packed as legion though) all with the usual beautiful zone and theme.

Hopefully in future not everything can be squashed onto a postage stamp sized map making everything in the game feel like finding a mob on a boat with multiple rooms and floors. The game didn't fall apart when we had large zones with up and down and flying.

Yeah. But its no storm peaks. Now those were high mountains.

I saw many complaints about the layout, but the only place I had issues getting to was the mining/smithing trainers located in the middle of nowhere.

Oh, and that asshole 'click here to jump in a barrel' shit. That sucked.

Me too. And it isn't even rose-colored glasses; I genuinely enjoyed the shit out of Legion. I know a lot of people had complaints, but in general, as a casual player, it was a great time.

But fuck that place without flying.

For real.

Whoever designed that zone can go piss up a rope.

Great place, went there, saved everyone there's life, put them in my debt forever. Then they join the Horde and engage in open war with my faction :(. Same with the Nightborne.

This tent in Highmountain (just up the river from that Tauren family's camp) is where my druid would live, if she had to choose. (RIP Legion fishing)

Also - shout out to the Kobolds who, it turns out, actually had a point with all that "must keep candles!" business.

2
Vraecla:alliance::druid:•

Awesome zone, but I really do not like how steep the mountain is in many parts. Wish it looked more like the mountains in Kul'Tiras do, a bit more real. I especially hated the steep drop into Val'Sharah with it's nonsensical biome change.

All in all, I disliked how the Broken Isles biomes and zones were. They made no sense, especially when you look at how cohesive zones from other expansions are. Still loved Legion though, my favorite expansion.
