Expectations

As I lie, I think of
all the things I'm meant to be:

Alive, awake, alert, and enthusiastic!
Alive, awake, alert, and enthusiastic!

It sounds fantastic—but not for me.
I'm sleepy, slow, and cynical.

But I am alive. And I am awake.
If anything I'm too alert,

and my enthusiasm needs reigning in.
Though people might not see it,

it is a part of me to be
alive, awake, alert, and enthusiastic.
