Shame there isn't 8 science packs. It is very un-factorio to not have it perfect like that.
You can get same result with almost half the number of belts if you cross them like overlapping S's.
But this wouldnt look that good. Weaving science belts is an asthaetic crime!
Hmm.. I think I understand? There's definitely ways to reduce the amount of materials. Thanks!
Why not speed beacons?
You definitely should be using beacons late game. I just never got around to design a template with them since this design was able to do the job very well early on.
I never understood speed beacons in science labs. The footprint of science labs is so small that it is trivial to just build more labs, which saves you the increased energy cost and production malus.
Productivity modules vastly increase the cost of the lab, making beacons a much better speed increase than more labs.
Speed modules are generally only good when being beaconed onto prod moduled buildings, or in pumpjacks.
Interesting. I never considered that angle. Thank you!
Well if you want prod modules in all of them you will need a LOT more labs to compensate
Is tha treally the case? I think a theoretical hard upper limit is something like 11x using this here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/6d6r3j/maximizing_research_speed_and_productivity_50m/
and that does include neither the footprint of the beacons nor the productivity malus. I think I mostly saw something like 500 percent in "practical" lab setups. On the other hand I don't have that much beaconing experience.
or, put differently, three of ops setups are enough for 1.2 kspm.
Ye I guess you’re right
TIL laboratories take modules. Never even thought of it and efficiency modules seem like a must-have on them!
I think productivity is better. There was a list of the best things to put productivity in and the top two are labs and Rocket.
I meant productivity. The names confuse me every time. With efficiency I always think material efficiency and think I don't even know what the productivity one does lol.
Why go this route vs just Daisy chaining from Lab to lab?
Because I didn't know it was possible when I made this a while ago. Lol.
Also, that runs into scaling issues - if you put too many labs in a row, you can often see labs not getting to use the science packs before they're passed onto the next one. I'm not sure what the magic number is, but if you see your labs just constantly passing packs and never using them, take a few labs off that row.
Why run 4 belts or daisy chain labs if you can make sushi? 250 SPM over single blue belt is pretty easy.
No need to manage a sushi belt? :)

It's not that hard, yeah? :)

Managing a sushi belt is just a handful of wires though, I'll even sushi for normal production.
No need for wires at all if you have sorting and recycling on another end :P
I use something like this from my first playthrough. I was too lazy to move my labs to fit second belt. So I added some inserters to (slowly) feed the belt and some inserters to sort unused packs. And just sideloaded fresh packs onto sorted belts.
I cant imagine the science rate to be able to fill this O.O
168 labs in the blueprint will take in 411.6 SPM with infinite researches that use 1 bottle per minute.

Same size setup with bots and beacons would consume roughly 3 times as much :) (Fresh memory from last night...)
I just have them in a row, but same layout basically. But I can beacon them that way, I think. Though now I'm not certain anymore, I don't remember what the reach of the beacons is.
Though I would never have a single science take up a full belt, the 4th belt stays half empty for me.
No room for space science on that one
easily to add, though.
You know that you can take a science pack out of a lab and pass it behind? So only 4 belts and a lot of inserters
Damn if this is simple I must be an idiot. I’ve been playing on and off for almost a month and I can’t get to this level of min maxing
Simple as in there is no splitters, underground belts or anything complex about it.

it literally just feeds 7 items into the lab?
