Unfortunately it seems like you have to shell out for the most expensive i7 cpu to be able to add 32GB RAM. I'm glad that wqhd screen is an option but configuring it with anything more than just 16GB RAM and the wqhd screen is ridiculously expensive.

I found it to be not too expensive if you use the TXTATWORK code. But now I am actually considering going with something potentially a while lbs lighter with the surface.

My tactic: configure with i7 and WQHD, add the 16GB of onboard RAM, then buy a replacement SSD if you want more than 256 and buy aftermarket 16GB or 32GB 2666 SODIMM stick from samsung. You’ll save a bit (last I checked) and come out with way more. You’ll actually be able to hit the 48GB limit on the T490.

But it doesn't applies on t490s since the ram is soldered.

Missed the ‘s’ in the title, whoops.

What do you need 32 gig of RAM for?

What are those?

Electron based apps?

Some popular ones include Discord, Xbox Beta (pc), Slack, Teams.

It's more or less a meme, the new Java that the internet likes to hate because of some bad implementations.

Actually, 32GB is the most I can find in any < 3lbs laptop. Most of my desktops have 128GB ram.

I like to have a lot of ram for reasons like:

  • Linux is a ram pig, chrome, ZFS on linux is also a pig but I don't use that on a laptop, and also doing builds in general is a huge consumer depending on what linker you're using or if you're enabling Link-Time optimizations.

  • Virtualization: When you're doing any amount of cross platform development in general, it's really nice to be able to drop 16GB on a VM to test something out or reproduce a bug.

  • Software Bugs, Bloat: Having tons of memory also means I rarely have hangs or thrashing that cause my system to become unresponsive. Modern software is full of bugs and often with more ram I find it takes a longer time for those bugs to cause me to need to restart anything.

But, it is fair to say that needing 32GB ram for a computer that only has 4 cores is probably a little silly. I'll give you that for sure.
