NTC 2.0 is WoWS' "Gold Ammo" - And it ain't going away, but I am.
Former WoT PTSD-victim here!
For that reason, I always feared WG might pull their equivalent "Gold Ammo" on WoWS, too. Hoping they would not. 2019 and its insane number of lootbox events have been tough. Even line releases come in lootboxes now! "Free content" is being sold in Early Access. Everything, including TX Premiums in WoWS can effectively be bought for money now.
Because of this development and prior experience, I had decided: "I'm out the same moment, WG pulls their equivalent of WoT's Gold Ammo."
That moment seems closer than I thought, because it looks as if (after Research Bureau as preparation) NTC 2.0 will be exactly that: The Gold Ammo of WoWS. The last straw for me. Removal of equality from the last (financially) fair and level playing field left in WoWS: Silver Ships
Here's why:
- 1. (Im)Balance:
Unwilling or incapable: WG can't be assed to properly (I mean properly!) balance TX. They never could. Or much of any part of WoWS. (In their defence: Balance doesn't sell ships) If it wasn't obvious, last Clan War Season could've just been called "Russians, Premiums 'n' Kleber-Mode" instead. Balance clearly isn't a priority.
Therefore I got absolutely ZERO faith WG will suddenly balance multiple (UU) editions of T10 ships they failed to balance as single editions before (Even less, make each Unique relevant)
- 2. It's already decided:
DevBlog, if you read it carefully, made clear: This feature isn't potentially implemented, it's decided. It'll come. They even set the date already. WG must've anticipated this change to be universally despised. Why? Because they already fucking tried it once before!
The sheer determination and balls required to even try this is impressive. Again! NOW! Amidst the PR fiasco! That made one thing very clear:
How little they care that NTC was hated. Even more so, how much they desperately want to implement it. Therefore
- 3. This isn't going away. (Obviously)
(Or as Lesta's CEO would put it: "No amount of whining will change it!" What a role model for all us unemployed idiots with health issues! What a hero!)
Now you might be asking yourselves:
"Why is WG so hellbent on doing it anyway? Why is this so important to them? What's worth this calamity?"
Simple (same reason as most stupid shit in WoWS): Money!
NTC 2.0 = "Buff your ships for Cash"
Unique Upgrades will likely make your ship stronger. (Otherwise what's the point of even going thru all of this?) Can you imagine grinding towards any Yamato upgrade, requiring to completely grind the entire IJN BB tree at least twice... and that Upgrade doing anything but buff dispersion, concealment, heal or reload? Neither can I. (E: Prerequisite to access Research Bureau is 5x Tier 10 ships, ofc)
So whale forth and buy Upgrades! Like this:
- Money ->
- Doubloons ->
- Convert EliteXP (for Dbl.)->
- FreeXP ->
- Use FXP -> insta-grind e.g. up to Yamato (~800.000XP)
- Instantly reset (i.e. lose) Yamato, back to Tier 1
- Get Research Points (for Reset)
- Unique Upgrades (bought w/ RP)
You could own any Unique Upgrade in a few minutes. 🎵"All you need is pay!" (for XP conversion and ofc tens of millions of Credits) Play 4 games of Co-Op and you got your RPs. Extraordinarily expensive, but entirely possible. In fact, buying a Colbert/Ohio for money, is already practically possible. Or does anyone think every one of those Ohios was "paid" for via grind? Or at least unconverted FXP? I know many were. But sure not even close to all.
On top of that: The unreasonably high price leaves even less incentive to try and balance them. Cuz OP shit sells well. And this double conversion (Doubloons->FXP->RP) is likely the most profitable Doubloon sink in WoWS, yet.
That super-high price (aka Return on Investment) is the reasos for all this. Implementing the most expensive content yet... for almost zero development cost. Endlessly repeatable. It's genius! It's why WG is fully willing to weather this shitstorm. Their spending pattern analyses apparently suggested: It'll be entirely worth it. Whales will still pay up. And that money is the kind of feedback that ultimately matters. (Proof: Endlessly ignored Q&A feedback. Hundreds of times, repeating how much we HATE... exactly everything the PR Directives turned out to be. To a degree of resemblance, it looks like trolling. The Bizarro-version of community wishes)
-Bottom line-
NTC 2.0 will likely make Uniques a requirement in competitive. And buying them possible. In turn, peer-pressuring other players into following accordingly. Further enforcing the need to own them as they become standard. ("Either another super-grind or more money! Or... be content with your disadvantage, you cheap shit!")
If NTC 2.0 goes live, competitive modes at Tier 10, TX Ranked, TX Clan War and TX KotS... will die. And due to consequences for Balance, Equality and Population... so might TX Randoms eventually. At which point WoWS is the digital equivalent of Polo: Only for the Rich and Privileged. (In one of the already most steeply priced F2Ps in the entire market, that's quite the achievement)
Just as any Competitive mode, so will my participation in this game be: Dead. I won't play, nor pay this much to stay competitive; Nor support business practices like these or anything I got so little faith left in.
To me, this IS WoWS' equivalent of "Gold Ammo". And I'm out the very day that shit's going live.
Probably in 3 months.

Clarification: Criticism not directed at any one Designer, Programmer, Artist or even Community Manager, but those who call the shots, decide monetisation models, the ever more horribly/boringly designed missions etc. The ones who ordered the radical course "corrections", redirecting this ship to where it's been heading lately.

Tin foil hat on....
The only explanation that I've got for the Lesta GM post:
Phase 1 - Be/appear to be a cynical a$$ole and troll the community
Phase 2 - Announce a second punch... something guaranteed to raise pitchforks.
Phase 3 - Retreat... victory to the angry mob... GM posts a decent apology recognising his arrogance and "why can't we all be friends..."
Phase 4 - By this phase almost everybody already forgot about the PR Fiasco. The rest will be able to say: "Well... at least we won one"
Phase 5 - Profit
Considered this might be a diversion, yeah. And to a degree is sure shifts the focus away from PR. The fewer ppl are informed about the event, the more buy into the PR grind.
Intended or not: It already is successful. (Just look at the shift on this Sub) For now. But that PR boomerang will hit us again, once more and more ppl are getting that "BUY ME FOR... ANOTHER 35K!" button in their port and realise what WG is trying to do.
Imo they just set off another charge between two already planned explosions.
That's why they are also doing refunds for the boosters. No one will be able to say that they were "tricked" by the directives.
At this point, if anyone is not aware of the PR Fiasco doesn't use the forums, this sub, twitter, facebook, youtube, etc.... therefore doesn't matter. They are not holding pitchforks.
It's depressing how many Gorizias you see in game. I did a co-op to knock off a snowflake the other day and there were six in one game.
I get it. It makes the first three directives easier and you get the doubloons back (though you are paying full ticket price for those doubloons with no discount). Hell, if the PR grind were reasonable it would be an example of a fairly healthy method of shearing whales a little.
The problem is that the whole PR situation is cynical and abusive, and all the people buying Gorizias are pumping money into the game that WG's balance sheet will list as being directly attributable to the PR event. They've helped make this event a more successful one, from WG's perspective.
I'm assuming that anyone who was going to buy Gorizia has already done so, but for the love of god, next time WG does a PR-like absurd grind event, don't give them money even if on paper the math works out for you. Rewarding WG's bad behavior encourages them to do more of this.
The Gorizia offer makes good sense for players even if they aren’t trying for Puerto Rico. If you were going to buy doubloons or boxes, you basically get a much smoother directives grind for free, and there’s good stuff in the event other than PR. I’m sure their analysts will break out “people who bought Gorizia” and “people who bought PR boosters” as two different cohorts with some overlap.
In general I wouldn’t worry about how your purchase looks to WG. Buy what you think is good value. Pass on what you think is bad value. Your purchases are only a single data point among many thousands.
If they did not returned money, WG would be hanged by EU Consumer Protection Agencies(getting money trough false advertisment(aka "Free PR")), so no choice for WG... in EU at least.
They aren't refunding money, they're refunding doubloons. It's well within EU law, it's the whole point why games like this has their own currency.
Technically, you got what you paid for; doubloons.

Phase 3 kind of happened already.
