Such A Smart Watch!

i was arranging a phone date by text this morning and told my friend i’d call at 12:30pm. she texted back and asked “Your time or mine?” and the first two pre-written responses AW had ready for me to tap were “My time.” and “Your time.” Damn. that was easy.

And yet messages you erased on your iPhone still show up on your Apple Watch.

And your iPad. And your Macbook. This is one of THE most infuriating things about iMessages.

cluelessbutyoungSeries 3 GPS + Cellular•

Or the even more infuriating thing of Apple Watch not showing SMS messages as read when you’ve already seen them and deleted them from your phone.

Personally I haven’t had mine long enough to have those bugs but for some reason Reminders refuses to sync up with the full lists on my phone and remain blank.

DrKellyD•

I had this problem for a while too. I make lists in reminders for shopping, etc. I finally figured out that if I asked Siri on my AW to add something to a list (hey Siri can you add tomatoes to my shopping list), then tell it to make a new list with that name (once it couldn’t find the list name). Once I did that I had a new ‘shopping’ list in reminders on my iPhone. I deleted my original shopping list (which had the same name 🤷‍♀️). Since then it’s worked pretty well. Something about the list being made from the AW finally forced the sync connection. Or maybe I just got luck

Up until somewhat recently, true. But since the addition of Messages in iCloud, now it can (optionally) all be in sync as outlined here: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT208532

If that's not happening then either the feature isn't enabled or your devices aren't updated. I don't think it supports watch yet, but everything else is supported.

freudianmedicineS5 Silver Aluminium 40mm•

Guess my devices are gimped then - I definitely have them all updated and enabled, and it doesn't sync at all for me :(

2

It’s amazing how great iMessage is except for this. Is it like the sync interval or something? Why does this happen?

2
poopspeedstream•

It has to do with the fact that they didn’t want to keep private messages on apple servers. It was a choice they made that made correct syncing much harder.

1

I respect the privacy trade off immensely. Most companies wouldn’t be that committed.

LiteralWasteOfTime•

I mean, you did erase it on your phone, not on anything else so duh it would stay on other devices, makes sense tbh, now if they added a option to delete across all devices, that would be nice

freudianmedicineS5 Silver Aluminium 40mm•

I mean. That's the whole point of cloud based syncing. I delete a Note or a Reminder or an email from my phone and it deletes from everything else. So why should iMessages be any different?

plaid-knight•

If you turn on Messages in iCloud, it doesn’t sync deleting conversations? Or are you talking about individual messages?

6
freudianmedicineS5 Silver Aluminium 40mm•

Nope, mine doesn't sync deleted conversations.

3
poopspeedstream•

iMessage wasn’t cloud based until very recently, if i recall correctly

So if you add an song to your Apple Music on your iPhone it would make sense if it did not add on your iPad?

3
Peace_FogSpace Grey Aluminium•

Apple Music Library is different than messages

If you delete messages from your phone they stay on your Mac & iPad

4
LiteralWasteOfTime•

Okay but were talking about messages, not music

Open up your Watch app on your iPhone and go to the messages setting. You see where it says mirror my iPhone. That setting your talking about already exists just doesn’t work.

You’re getting downvoted for being right

Do you have iCloud turned on got messages? I never have this issue now that it’s turned on.

Yep, that's machine learning for you.

101
milkysniper•

It’s largely just language processing, I doubt there was any machine learning involved. Still, it’s impressive. I like that google and Apple try to parse the language to find responses with information you’d otherwise have to dig a bit for, like location information.

Ah, my bad. Not too familiar with the proper terminology there. Gotta agree it's definitely awesome.

NLP (Natural Language Processing) is a subfield of AI, so you weren’t wrong in calling it ML

Cool, thanks!

Natural language processing (NLP) is the field of research to which you're referring. The current state-of-the-art NLP models use machine learning to generate these types of responses.

Example: GPT-2 by OpenAI (https://openai.com/blog/better-language-models)

milkysniper•

I’m referring to general text/language processing, I’m not sure they’re using anything this advanced for the basic “or” question responses.

This feature has been here for a number of years, I think.

Most language processing today uses machine learning.

Same i got when i was asked if i want white or red wine... nice but nothing overly impressive (the feature has at least 3 years)

Drizzt198540mm S4•

this is one of my favourite features but i find it hit or miss. I'm not sure what parameters it's looking for. Presumably a sentence with an "or" in it that ends in a question mark with a set number of words/characters on either side of the "or". Either way it doesn't work every time someone texts me with a question with 2 options in it, but I love it every time it does work.

I know this is an Apple Watch group, but does anyone know if Android Wear or Samsung Tizen is capable of this?

-6
xiurobert•

Try r/AndroidWear. Like you said, it's an Apple Watch group. We probably don't know. You can always give it a try though

I’m actually an Apple Watch owner. I don’t own an Android device or other smart watch. I’m just curious and figured someone here may have had the experience since many of us have switched ecosystems in the past.

xiurobert•

Still, you will have a better chance in that subreddit.

3
Sweetfacialhairbro•

They do. But that’s about it. I switched over to an iPhone just for a better watch experience.
