Eating healthy and cooking all my own meals has freed up some discretionary income. I think these were money well spent.

If you got those for lifting, then you should have bought some Chuck Taylors.
If you got those for running, then LIKE A BOSS.
For those looking for personalized lifting shoes, you can do that on the Chuck Taylor website.
Website? Do it with a Sharpie.
Yeah but you can make them look like bowling shoes on the website! Go make some shoes right now (you can design without buying). It's fun.
Ok, you got me there. It is fun.

Vibram Five Fingers > all
Not when it's 20-30 F outside :-\ I tried running once this winter and was afraid I'd hurt my feet because they were getting so cold that I couldn't feel them well.
There are socks with individual toes that can be worn with with the shoes. I'm not sure if this would be sufficient protection from the cold though.
I don't understand why you're being downvoted. The Vibrams are excellent lifting shoes.
He's being down-voted because he stated vibrams are better than all other shoes, which isn't true. They are great for a lot of things but they have a number of shortcomings e.g. Protection from the cold. Mind you I say this as I wear a pair, but they don't work great in all situations.
On the other hand, if you acclimate your feet to the cold, you can overcome that shortcoming. And having more brown fat can be good for weight loss. Plus, being able to handle the cold is one measure of how healthy you are, at least in my book.
That said, I don't own any vibrams.
ive been running with a pair of KSOs are they are extremely hard to run on a treadmill with...there's no cushon and it just seems like you are crashing down on the treadmill.
I totally envision him running with the shoes in exactly That position.
My arms get tired after the first mile, but it's worth it.
Nike a BOSS
Okay, I must know...How much and where can I get that?
Those look like a pair of Nike Free shoes. You can order them online customized like that here.
I have a near-identical pair that say "Mabbo" on each shoe.
Order them custom from Nike. They're pretty awesome.
i love my nike frees... great overall running / training shoe
went from 3.0s to nike free run+ ... 3.0s were better but now they come in neon colors which are not my cup of tea.
I would recommend the saucony grid a4. It's a great minimalist racing flat that doesn't look too ridiculous. I got them about 6 months ago as an all around metcon shoe and they've been great.
Or even better, look at Inov-8's
I would really like to try out the Inov-8 F-Lites, but I haven't been able to find them in store anywhere. My sizing is a little quirky and I like to try shoes on before I deal with the hassle of picking them up (I had to go up 1/2 a size in the Sauconys). I wish the Inov-8's were more widely available (for some reason even the specialty running stores around me don't have them).
I like my Kinvaras for racing, but they're very similar shoes.
Congratulations on physically incorporating a meme into your life.
Thanks!
Nike frees... One of the best crosstraining shoes ever IMO. Extremely comfortable, amazingly light, and very stylish.

Did you get those embroidered?
If you order from Nike, they give the option to get custom embroidery and color schemes. It's called NikeID
Well spent indeed. You are the wind beneath my wings.

you. are. my. hero.
You have to tell me your secret to how eating healthy helps free up your income. I can live off of Ramen and McDonalds a lot cheaper than I can by eating healthy. My grocery bills went up dramatically once I started watching what I ate.
As a student living off loans I was able to qualify for government food money. 200 bucks a month. My kitchen now stays stocked with all kinds of healthy goodness. If your on the Ramen diet I'd look into it.
Tell me more about this, please.
NICE!
Wait, what the fuck. You get food stamps? I was told I wasn't eligible because I don't have a job (just loans and grants).
No they usually look at your bills against your income.
Yeah, I had a friend in college who was on food stamps (as well as in gvmnt. housing) and didn't hold a job. Maybe someone was mistaken?
Didn't mention in the other post but I wanted you to get an orange-red giving you positive info - loans and grants are considered exempt income (meaning you may as well be making $0). As long as you're not sitting on a ton of assets (nice car or money in the bank), you should be able to re-apply and be eligible for certain benefits. Just contact your local office for help.
Awesome. Thanks for the info and advice. I'll be re-applying in March and now look forward to meeting with my case worker knowing this.
I get $5550 at a time, but it has to last for 6 months. I shouldn't keep that in the bank?
In Texas, you don't need a job to receive food stamps (here, it's called supplemental nutritional assistance program - SNAP). You can even be making unemployment and receive food stamps. They just compare your income to the federal poverty income level for your family size and budget group size (e.g., how many people live in your house and are making money for you). Anyway, I think the policy is pretty similar around the country.
edit: if anyone has any CHIP/Medicaid/other gov't. assistance program questions, I can try to help out... I'm a policy analyst/contractor for the HHSC. Basically, you just have to prove you're poor and in the country legally (US citizen or LPR), and the government hooks you up.
mattjeast is correct. I'm actually from Texas and the process was pretty simple. Just visit the Health and Human Services office if you believe you qualify, bring bills, rent checks etc., and they compare how much you have versus how much you pay out. I have a research assistant job at the University as well but the pay is, well, not sufficient to pay these things. I received my Lone Star Card the day I went in and was approved for 6 months before my first review. I can't recommend this enough if you believe you qualify.
is fruit and veg not cheaper at farmers markets? and in the long term your diet will equate to some major health bills and clothes expenditure.
Often, but not always.
True.
Depends on how close you live to a farm, but in general not really, based on my experiences in a couple large American cities.
You have to cook for yourself--and eat in moderation, don't wolf down all your produce as soon as you buy it. A third of a head of lettuce is enough for one salad, rather than the whole head.
this, eating 150g protein per day is really expensive compare to just having some pasta or rice.
Maybe OP isn't American? Where I live, junk food is actually pretty expensive compared to cooking healthy at home. I have managed to greatly cut down my food expenditures by staying away from takeaway junk and soda. I used to also throw a bunch of food out because I was so lazy and disorganized that a lot of the stuff I bought would just go bad. Now that I plan my meals for a few days in advance, I waste a lot less.
Chicken rice and beans
You're probably buying the wrong healthy foods. If it's in a package and has stuff all over it telling you how healthy it is, then that's wrong. Buy produce. I spend like $10 a week on groceries (minus staples like once a month I buy a $6 bag of frozen chicken tenderloins). Produce area of the grocery store and farmers markets are cheap cheap cheap
totally this, I can go to my local grill and eat unlimited salad, with ribs and chicken for cheaper than a home cooked meal!
Buy in bulk and look for offers. A sack of potatoes costs much less than its equivilent in fries.
yeah, except I hate potatoes....
non-root veggies are soo expensive where I live. Also: paleo.
Good thing potatoes aren't the only food sold in bulk. Don't paleo people go nuts for nuts? Those are sold in bulk.
If you can't eat healthy and well on $105 of groceries a week (vs. 7 days of local grill at $15), you're doing something very very wrong.
I don't know where you live, but where I am you can get a head of lettuce for $1-$2, and meat for $2-$4/pound (chicken breast, pork chops, steak, whatever's on sale) if you buy the large value packs.
Then again, maybe you live on a first world salary in a third world country, but generally prepared food is always more expensive than groceries.
It's cheaper to make your own fast food and more filling.
spend more money eating healthy natural foods also. Coupons don't cover healthy shit. Milk no hormones added costs more. Chicken no hormones added cost more. Only thing that I can buy a lot of that doesn't cost much is broccoli.

Of course it's cheaper to make all your own meals. I wasn't debating that. I was just pointing out that it's far cheaper to eat unhealthy food as opposed to healthy food. Even though you find healthy food pretty cheap, it's still probably not cheaper than Ramen, Lean Cuisine and Hostess snacks.

Prior to cooking all my own meals I was eating out a lot. My original thought process was that it was simply cheaper to eat out than try and cook for one. I was very wrong.
Obviously you can eat much cheaper on a Ramen diet, but it's not great when you're trying to make gains at the gym.
