What causes CC to have this kind of graphical glitch? These dresses look totally fine in CAS, but in Live mode they have this weird "shiny" texture all over them and the rest of the sim head-to-toe, even where the CC clothing item isn't covering them.

I cannot help you with the problem but these are hysterical.

Lol, glad you enjoyed it. It's a super annoying problem though :(

Here is a tutorial for how to fix it! It’s a problem with the spec map. Unfortunately I couldn’t get them to show in cas so I just do it as I discover the issue.

FYI, I finally took some time today and went through to fix stuff. It worked great! But it definitely took a long time. I looked at the “speculars” for other already-working CC, and based on how those looked and some other things I’ve seen about sunbathing/tanning in the game (if you have Island Living), I’m pretty sure that the effect of this fix is that the item will effectively not block the sun at all, meaning zero impact on tan lines.

So if you wore all items with this problem/fix (even if visually they covered your sim’s whole body), you would get a perfectly even tan, leaving no tan lines for any other outfit at all. Just a theory though, I haven’t tested it :)

Thank you, this looks like a pretty definitive solution. I'll definitely make use of this tutorial!

its something in your settings for sure. laptop mode maybe?

3
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

It doesn't happen with all CC, only certain items. I do play on a laptop, but I didn't know there was a "laptop mode". I'll look around the settings for something like this.

Edit: Just checked my settings. I did not have laptop mode on. All of my graphics settings are set to "High" except for smoothing edges. I tried selecting uncompressed sim textures, but that had no effect. Unless there are more advanced settings hidden somewhere, there doesn't seem to be a lot of things to tweak that I would expect to have an effect, unless turning down my graphics could fix it? I'm at a loss :(

are they all by the same creator? maybe its the CC? Im not sure. Hopefully someone can give you the answer youre looking for!! good luck!

IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

I don't think so, but maybe it's a creator issue? We've downloaded a lot of CC clothing, and it impacts maybe 3-5%-ish of the items we've downloaded roughly. I did find the item again on TheSimsResource (linked in another comment here) and I noticed that it mentions a custom mesh, so maybe something to do with that. I found another that I also know to be a problem item that is by a different creator that also mentions a custom mesh, so that could certainly be part of the issue.

Could it possibly be the lipstick and not the dresses? That was a problem I was having

3
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

No, I'm not using any custom lipstick or makeup. For these screenshots, I actually started from a different outfit that was working fine and just changed the dress and removed all other clothes (i.e. shoes). And I haven't varied the makeup very much at all between all of her various outfits, and it's only a select few clothing items that have been issues.

Is your game fully patched? I used to get the same effect on my teen's scout uniforms, but they fixed that with one of the recent patches.

3
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

It should be. I don't ever turn down patches, but I can double-check just to be sure.

It happens to me before and i fixed it by running a batch fixes with sims4studio.

2
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

Is that basically a one-button fix program? or do you have to use it on each problem item individually?

2
AdelineofSunshine•

It is kinda like a one-button fix program. You can repair all of your CC who are prior to the game newest version and might have been broken since the update. The program will run through all of your CC and fix the ones who are broken.

IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

I got sims4studio. I didn't see a batch fix for island living (from some more research, that seems to have been when the shiny problem started). I tried running a few of the batch fixes and so far the shiny effect is still there.

Tallulah_J•

Because there is no batch fix for this issue. That batch fix is for completely different problem with buy/build items, not CAS. That suggestion above is just misleading.

I was having the same issues and it turned out to be a lipstick from a cc I downloaded. Quickest solution is to get Sims Tray Importer and what’s highlighted in red is the problem. I just erased the lipstick that was causing the issue after seeing that and my in game graphics are back to normal! Hope this helped!

2
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

Thanks, I'll definitely get this in conjunction with another comment's suggestion linking to a tutorial on fixing these things, which also suggests Sims Tray Importer. Is it difficult to use or set up?

2
Chub-boat•

Honestly this dunked in oil look is kind of cool but I do hope you can get it fixed!

2
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

If it was isolated to just the clothing item itself, then it would definitely make it at least an option to choose from, even if it’s not what I originally downloaded. But where it covers every bit of the sim including the head and face, it becomes an absolute no-go for me, personally.

Having the same problem :(

2
mistnclouds•

Okay I think I fixed it? I turned all the graphics settings onto high and very high, and turned on uncompressed skm textures and post processing effects, not sure which part fixed it

2
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

I read somewhere last night while researching that basically setting your graphics to ultra solves it because CAS displays in a higher resolution than live mode usually. That’s not my favorite solution, since that impacts performance more than I would like.

I haven’t tried it yet, but the link in this comment looks very promising, if a little time consuming depending on how much CC you have. I spent awhile last night messing with sims4studio per this comment, hoping it would be faster. While I was able to batch fix some other QOL things, it did not seem to have a batch fix for this problem.

1
Tallulah_J•

There is no batch fix for specular issue. And since it's been almost a year there is a very low chance that it will happen.

2
IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

I’m not savvy enough to program a fix, but I was ultimately able to resolve the issue, and the fix basically involved adding a file to each impacted CC item. I think I understand why it was sort of a short-cut fix and not a full fix. The full/true fix would probably need a far more complex script than anyone is willing to put the time in to do. I’m not sure why the imperfect fix couldn’t be relatively simple to script as a batch fix, but maybe no one is willing to do that because it would be inherently imperfect. Dunno.

1
honeybabatree•

I found it very easy! You save your sim(s) to your gallery, it will show up on the sims tray importer. You click on the household, and it will give you an option to view CC, which you click on, then it will show you all the files for the CC. The ones highlighted in red are the ones causing issues.

IvGotSomthinToSayOP•

Thanks :)

This is the left two dresses in the image, in case anyone wants to try to see if they have similar results.
