as an international student im gonna say that in my country we have to dress good every where we go. Our parent taught us to always show "our best" because if we dont who knows what others will think. Personally i like the US man style and im trying to go for that because it looks better here and you dont look like an idiot(my first day in the school here was a total embarrassment because i dressed very serious when all the others were chill af).

Personally i like the US style and im trying to go for it. Just i will use Adidas rather than Nike. I feel more comfortable with Adidas. I like Underarmour and im trying to have more of them because they seem like a quality firm.

Thank you guys for not making school that "formal' its very helpful.

Also born internationally and moved to US later. My dad says this as well. I try to actively go against that because I think it’s superficial lol.

Bro i dont want to act like a dick but our sense of "fashion" is very different. Im from Europe and you know all that snobish lifestyle and all that fancy shfancy for us looks normal. For me is very normal to go in school dressed well because after that i know im going to hang out to the rich side of the city and go to expensive lounges. I know for you might sounds stupid and toxic but for some of us is very normal and i like that lifestyle.

Here in US i know its not that lifestyle and its more chill and i love it. But when you say "whatever you want just dont look like much of a bum" i dont know where the line is for that. Just to be comfortable with my friends im going to dress as the rest of my friends so i dont have to think all the time what is "too much of a bum".

I meant it lightly and kind of as a joke. People still dress nice some even everyday but for the most part you dress how you want here as long as it suits the occasion.

To be fair, foreigners (at least in Europe and parts of Asia) just dress nicely in general. Americans tend to dress like bums in public

I find it annoying how you’re allowed to say that about Americans but if an American says something negative about foreigners, they get hate for it

That’s because Americans created a society of extremes. Either you’re a nazi or a communist lol. I’m an American citizen who was born overseas and I’ve been a citizen for 20 years now - so I have more of an unbiased point of view.

What I said is accurate, and it’s not coming from a place of hate, but the average American is so used to outrage culture that immediately people jump to pointing fingers and crying about stereotypes.

Americans say negative shit about foreigners all the damn time lmao. Just look at tv shows, movies, and social media posts and how they depict Russians, Asians, and other groups of people who don’t tend to fall into the “protected minority class” of the US.

It’s more socially acceptable to wear sweats out in the US than it is in other countries. I don’t necessarily agree with the original comment’s wording but it’s true that some of us have a tendency to dress down in public.

Depends on your area. In my hometown, I'd happily go out in sweats and a tank top to go pick up food. When I moved to NYC, there's an insane social pressure to look at least somewhat put together, so the majority of people look decent in my experience.

I think people were super triggered by me wearing pajama pants or sweats and a hoodie every day (especially in pharmacy) that I showed up

the funny thing is that I dressed super nice as a freshman in college and slowly degraded into a stoner wearing crumb-covered sweats to class

They wear less

A well choice of clothes will get you just that, but it might interferes with your comfyness. American likes baggy stuff like sweatpants and big size hoodie cause they are comfortable but most of the time it doesn't look as nice. Furthermore, Asians tend to be more slim build and that makes it a bit easier to fit in multiple types of clothes.
