By restricting public gatherings to 2 people ~3 weeks in from the first restrictions, lasting up to ~6 months they have accepted prolonged health (inc. mental) and economic damage making their 3 week "economy first" focus utterly pointless. How do you think Australians would respond long-term?

By going out and hoarding jigsaw puzzles obviously.

DREDAY_94•

I’ve just bought 17 jigsaw puzzles online, is this enough or do I need more!?!?

MORE

SpeciousArguments•

To all those Australians hoarding jigsaw puzzles.

JUST STOP IT!!

30
CapableExplorer•

I needed the laugh, thank you 🙂

6
DREDAY_94•

Yes but how many more!!! This is the question slomo didn’t give us! Fuck, how do I know I won’t be bored to death in 3 weeks because I’ve finished them all. Lol

EastAcanthaceaed•

Lol

cringe

-6
newman_2019VIC•

Just buy an all white or an all black one. Will keep you busy.

1
DREDAY_94•

I had an even better idea. Grab every jigsaw box tip them into one box & throw pieces in every room of the house. We just might be busy for the next 3 months

3
SpeciousArguments•

Or do them face down insteas of face up

3

You need more. I’ll trade you a roll of toilet paper for two more, five for some hand sanitizer

1
tyransynOPNSW•

I'm out of the loop, what is with the jigsaw puzzles? Was it today's version of trampoline parks?

8

ScoMo gave example of wife going out to get a heap of jigsaws for his gorls as ‘essential’ shopping.

I’m assuming he mean puzzles and not jig saws for cutting wood but who can tell.

19
tyransynOPNSW•

I am legitimately lost for words.

6
intellidepth•

Jig saws are far more constructive than puzzles.

4
hooflord•

nice one

2
brad-corp•

Yeah, pretty much. Scomo said his wife went out to the shops and bought a bunch of puzzles for the next 6 months.

I went to the bottle shop with the same idea.

12
pavlo_escobrah•

You drink for 6 months straight and try and piece your life back together

12
nostraduckus•

They sell jigsaw puzzles now? Tough times.

4
equityjurisp•

Hmm why not have both..puzzles and alcohol

1
JovianNights•

Also curious

1
humanuniverse1•

Yeah when ScoMo finishes his 40000 piece jigsaw puzzle it’s going to say “ You really fucked up mate”

1
mattyglen87•

I think this was always the plan, and theyre doing a gradual rollout so that:

A: there isnt mass panic

B: people actually comply

I think if we had gone from 0-100 in a span of days it couldve been disastrous, because it may have been outright rejected and resisted by the general public. Instead we have been somewhat eased into it so that todays measures arent really a shock. I disagree with a lot of what theyre doing, but I can see sound logic with this.

35
tyransynOPNSW•

I'd contend that the public was kind of primed for this kind of eventuality judging the responses from around the world and the stockpiling that was occurring for the last month. Obviously it wouldn't be the mass overnight shutdown of Wuhan, Spain or France but even staging it over a week (or even 10 days) is better than staging it over 3.

15
mattyglen87•

But people still panic, and if mass panic happened to a big enouch scale there could be complete anarchy. This crisis has shown that people can be irrational en masse when under stress, and the government is.managing the public very carefully to prevent this

6
tyransynOPNSW•

I don't think it is managing the public very well when a significant portion of the public flouts the laws introduced as part of the government's response...

I doubt we would ever be the US. The people are much more docile. Hell the NSW police strip searching fiasco didn't cause much outrage outside of reddit.

8
mattyglen87•

People are always going to flout it. The measures are being announced, encouraged, and then eventually enforced. It's a gradual process to adjust Australian society to a new way of living.

2
SkyRymBryn•

Maybe. NZ went from level 3 to level 4 in a few days.

We would have fewer cases if we had had a short time period between levels.

7
mattyglen87•

Id imagine that the government is willing to let a few more people get infected if it means better compliance with measures overall. They have a long term strategy here

7
SkyRymBryn•

NZ seems fairly compliant.

2
SkyRymBryn•

long term strategy here

Are we talking about the same politician?

4
Adz11•

And when NZ open in a month they’re headed for a Italy type disaster.

-4
PleasurePaulie•

I agree. We are used to our freedoms and liberties and emotionally had to come to terms with the idea of stronger lockdowns.

3
5HTRonin•

They're boiling the frog

2

Just saw a guy at Kmart with a trolley full of jigsaw puzzles...

22

Great! They'll all be on ebay later tonight.

5
SpeciousArguments•

I didnt vote for the LNP and will continue not to

13
GermaneRiposte101•

Would you change your mind if it turns out that we come through this crisis far better than any almost any other non Asian nation?

0
SpeciousArguments•

Im open to new information changing my mind, but nothing so far fills me with optimism

1

Would you like a medal?

-1†
Gygax_the_Goat•

Id like a change of fucking government thankyou

19
SkyRymBryn•

I'm not responding well. I think the 3 weeks was wasted time. We should have been on a firm lockdown earlier. I was in lockdown on March 02 and now I am bored brainless. If everyone had been on lockdown earlier, our numbers would be better, so the hospitals being overwhelmed could have been more delayed.

10
angrathias•

Why not use the time to do something constructive like educate more? In this age of the internet there’s no reason for someone to be bored apart from laziness

4
SkyRymBryn•

I have been keeping busy. I have at least one phone call a day with a designated friend. I am enrolled at uni where I've been doing tutorials online. I've been sewing cotton masks for friends and family. I'm about to start sewing scrubs for the local hospital. I ordered a whole stack of fiction books in February and also went to the library in preparation. I have ingredients for experimenting with various recipes. I have repotted some plants. Cleaned out my wardrobe. etc. etc.

But I'm an extravert. I live on my own. I'm bored with my own company. I don't think I'm lazy. I think I belong to a social species and I can't socialise in this lockdown.

8
angrathias•

Sucks to be on your own, maybe get into an MMO game or something. Maybe jump on modern warfare and listen to some teenagers talk about how they banged your mum, at some point you’ll be turned off humans for a while and your problem is solved

6
SkyRymBryn•

Umm, thanks for the suggestion (-: I'm negotiating about getting the family cat ...

4
tyransynOPNSW•

I think I am losing my god damn mind. After reading that doctor's opinion piece saying we should trust the HPPC and Scovid I think my brain should just shut off for the next couple of months. This is sheer incompetence at its finest form.

Back to reading papers it is...

8
Vectivus_61•

That doctor is on the medical committee in question

2
tyransynOPNSW•

Wait, so Ben Smith who wrote the SMH opinion piece is on the AHPPC?

2
Vectivus_61•

Ah shit wrong opinion piece. I thought you meant one by Paul Kelly

2
tyransynOPNSW•

Ah okay. Could I have the link to that one?

1
SkyRymBryn•

I ordered some fat 2nd hand books from ebay 5 weeks ago (planning for lock down), and they've been lost in the postal system. And because they're 2nd hand, they're not easy to replace - Aargh!!!

6
tyransynOPNSW•

Probably circling around in Chullora.

Interesting - and from the Australian Government Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor. Though I will have to hear Jack from Box Hill’s side as he did get a C+ in Year 8 science.

“And anyone who thinks we can impose restrictions for two or three weeks and then lift them and we can return to our normal lives – free of coronavirus – is misguided.

The risk is COVID-19 would rear its ugly head again, more aggressive than before.

Some people have asked why we haven’t imposed a blanket lockdown like other countries have done.

The answer to this is that unlike countries such as Italy, Spain and Iran, and cities such as Wuhan in China, we have remained ahead of the curve.”

3
tyransynOPNSW•

Where are their papers and reports? Surely our esteemed CMO and his team could just publish it so we can all see and validate their model right? Or is it a cabinet sealed document? Or are they relying on the fact that they are credentialed enough for their position?

Since you are so hell bent on defending them without ever linking to any evidence, why don't you provide the evidence on their behalf?

Edit: Also these reports don't count. No modelling data whatsoever to show predicted disease progression based on the mitigation strategies they propose.

6

They have no idea if they’re ahead of the curve, there aren’t enough testing kits in Australia and it’s hard to get tested. It’s terrifying, truly terrifying, that people could accept that explanation.

3
myusernameisgood99•

The public’s goldfish memories and the govt’s catchy slogans will lead Liberals to victory at the next federal election /s

Who knows.

Seems to be the only thing that works is to take human beings out of the equation with this virus.

So social distancing is going to work.

But then you get people with two marbles for brains who think it's fun to go visit friends and enter their home and cough everywhere.

So there will be patrols, because Australians have shown they might be a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

But I expect it as it's been happening. Lockdown by increments. 500 people, 200 people, 50 people etc etc. Which means our food supplies run out and we need to go to the shops more often and expose ourselves to the virus.

I think, personally, they are doing incremental lockdown so that when we do fully lockdown, it will have the most psychological impact on the populace and 90% will follow it.

I mean we can look to other countries. China is still having infections, not as bad, but it's still there and the people are rioting. Work hasn't come back.

It feels so surreal to be living in this time.

PleasurePaulie•

Omg whaaaaat! I wanted to play jigsaw puzzles at the trampoline park 😔

European leaders are calling Scomo asking how we are doing what we are doing. We are world leading this guys.

1
GermaneRiposte101•

This is the correct answer. I have been saying exactly this for the past three or four days.

But even if we come out of this with a trivial number of virus related deaths these idiots who blindly hate Scomo (and he is not my favourite person) will still ask for his head.

1
Lilac776•

More importantly they went from "we can't close Australia to China- that would ruin the economy" to shutting the borders anyway so 🤗

1
GermaneRiposte101•

... utterly pointless

Could you make please public your mathematical models that you used to justify your comments? If you did not go to that extent then surely you have some sort of spreadsheet which shows rates of change of the disease as well as economic implications? You of course would have factored in a large percentage of the relevant variables of a modern society.

What, you have neither? No, surely that is not possible!

To say things so confidently surely you must have some underlying calculations backing up your statement.

Hmm. Nothing to back up what you say.

Well, in that case, you are just a loud mouth talking out of your arse.

Edit: spelling

1
tyransynOPNSW•

I don't have to. I can just go through all the transcripts of all their live press conferences and just copy and paste their quotes.

That is the beauty. You can use their own words against them. Kill their argument with their own quotes.

Think a video montage of the PM and the Treasurer fixated on the economy, then intersperse it with excepts from business books and risk management books would do the job.

And I love how you are implicitly telling some one else to shut up. How authoritarian of you.

Big caveat: the economic damage part is predicated on the fact that the new Jobkeeker payments were finalised 1 day after I posted the thread, so in terms of "updated economic impact" the effect is unknown. But the above points will remain for posterity's sake.
