Post-riot cleanup

My mom sent photos of citizens cleaning up today after a riot in Madison, Wisconsin yesterday. Can we do the same thing in DTX tomorrow, or should we let the city handle it? Don't want to get in the way.

Update, 6/1: Folks are organizing and/or discussing pockets of cleanup and support. In addition to the efforts discussed in this thread, here are other threads of related content:

This needs more upvotes. Boston Strong means taking care of our city regardless of who made the mess.

I'm down, seems like the common might need some cleanup. We shouldn't leave it to (most likely) low paid workers to do alone

66
EntireBumblebee•

Right? The same workers who have worked through all of the shut down putting themselves at risk while many of us had the privilege of being home. We need to support them the way they have supported us!

geffe71custom•

IIRC DTX pays a company to keep the area clean, its not the city employees

Word, that's actually great. But still would be an amazing message if a few people could make it down there tomorrow.

geffe71custom•

No doubt. Would be a good idea

Downtown crossing had BID. Not sure if they are active, considering the circumstances of covid, but hope some of those guys kept their jobs. Good people.

24
StrictlyOnerous•

They have been active trough out this as far as I know, limited but working.

Looks like this should happen.

Dtx 10 am @ park station?

54
a-r-c•

10am?

why so late? I doubt there will be much "action" after sunrise so might as well start at 7-8

26

im down

18
kshao3795•

I’ll be at park station at 7am with gloves and bags

26

see ya there!

11
Jish1202•

I've been here since 7 for work and I've seen probably 10 different street sweepers. the city has had a cleaning army out since probably 5

17
asperatology•

Perhaps it would be a good idea to take photos and do another round of hashtag #TrashTag challenge, so we continue the effort of cleaning up our environments.

36

I'd go... that would be fine with me

26
Northeastern_J•

I'll be there

16

morning time? Want to meet?

4
Northeastern_J•

Sure, 9, 10? Are those too late? Happy to bring trash bags.

5

someone else said they are going to meet at park station at 7. im going to join for that

6
Northeastern_J•

Not a bad idea. Doesn't look like much debris for now but of course that may change

21
kshao3795•

Definitely want to help but have work in the morning - if anyone wants to join at 7 or 8AM!

13
coldsnap123•

Clean up is the easy part. Should come up with a fund to help people pay for emergency board up and window replacements.

10
ImTheAvataraBoston•

Nah, pay bails instead!

-11
taubut•

No thanks. The people who destroyed that wallgreens beyond repair and will probably have to be closed down forever leaving people in that area without the ability to buy essential items should stay in jail. Along with the people who started looting stupid shit like the Timberland and Uggs store. What did those places do to deserve that?

5†
RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS•

Whatever you think about the rioting I very much doubt that that Walgreens will be closed forever.

11
QuinZ33•

should stay in jail.

Innocent until proven guilty.

If they're not an active threat or a flight risk, give them a court date and release them.

Bail harms poor people and doesn't do a thing for rich people. There's no need to inject even more inequality into the system.

Yeah I'm sure Walgreen has Insurance for that.

I have zero fucking respect for a white person that can't talk about the murder that causes this but needs to talk about the reaction. Stop. You've said enough. If you can't acknowledge the triggering events your judgement of the reaction is useless.

Get some fucking perspective you immature racist child.

I have zero respect for you. Part of the problem. Making it worse. Interesting strategy. You just don't want a society. Misanthropes. All of you. "You immature racist child." You legit think this is how change happens. Get the fuck out of here.

Came here for this, if there is cleanup where we can not be in the way and detrimental would be great to chip in

DTX 10am - will be there.

6
sevem•

Heading out now - see you there

Edit: was there from ~7:30-8:30. Already quite a few people out cleaning up the common - wasn't much to do, tbh. Glad i had a trash picker for all the needles from a turned over trash can. DTX was being cleaned by street sweepers and professional cleaning crews. Didn't have time to check out Newbury or Boylston.

ImTheAvataraBoston•

Just saw this! Finishing my coffee and heading over!

IdkWhatIwant895•

I would love to help. But i cant be certain that it wont pose a risk of harm to me if there are still rioters in the area.

4
mckatze•

I just drove through there an hour ago to drop someone off for work... it’s just a normal morning there with some damaged windows and planters.

14
LirkmorBU•

Gimme a little bit, it's about half an hour's drive for me but I'll be there.

Edit: by 8am most things were done. I picked up some glass and swept a couple of sidewalks but the sanitation crews must have been out at 4am.

4
sevem•

This was my experience, too. Lots of city and private crews out cleaning, as well as a good number of regular folks cleaning up in the common.

2
Jajpop91•

I was just thinking about this, Id like to come help too

3
ParagonTheon•

Heading on my way now, gonna be around Park Street and DTX with extra bags and water bottles

This group has been organizing clean up after each event if anyone wants to help tomorrow too.

I met them over there this morning.

Instead they’re out there causing chaos and destroying our city all while in the midst of a pandemic

Should people reschedule their fury over police systematically murdering black people for a more convenient time?

-4†
whamra•

It's neither the Boston PD nor Walgreens in Chinatown that murdered black people

13
KingSt_IncidentOrange Line•

Terrence Coleman was murdered by BPD

9
ImTheAvataraBoston•

Boston police force is plagued with racism as well.

We don't have to wait for them to murder someone to point it out.

3†
max212•

If everyone is more upset about some broken windows and plastic bottles than countless of examples of police indiscriminately abusing power to harm black folks, that might be part of the issue.

I'm not celebrating property destruction, but I certainly understand it. The same people who get all twisted about peaceful protests during the national anthem are losing their minds over gatherings during the pandemic. I'd like to hear more opinions from white people on when it would be appropriate for people of color to demonstrate.

(Also worth noting, there are dozens of videos from demonstrations around the country of white people causing property damage near protesters to try to make them look bad. Look it up).
