For my birthday my fiance made me this beautiful hand-carved, multilayered and stained DM screen. Pieces were made from one solid piece in order to have matching grain. The inside, at the time of this photo, is unfinished but has sleeve protectors (my preference) attached. Next up I may do a matching rail style initiative tracker now that my 3D printed toppers don't fit the increased width. If you have any questions, let me know!

Since this is getting more traction than I may have anticipated I have to plug some of her work. Website is down (at the moment), but check out u/rachelunderwoodart

She is crazy talented. The painting with the actual flowing water in her post history is kinda blowing my mind, not gonna lie.

Holy cow I checked her out because of this comment; I cannot comprehend her ability to do these things

Gorgeous! The design of the middle panel in your album reminds me of a chrysanthemum.

(Just an aside, fiancé is male; fiancée is female. Either way, you're very lucky :))

No shit, for real? TIL

Holy shit, I definitely gave people the wrong impression for about a year then. Thank you for the info!

Good news is that most people don’t know/use the gendered French meaning so I’m guessing no one noticed

00TooMuchTime00•

Is there a difference in pronunciation?

6
laughingdakini•

No there isn't. It just means 'affianced' or engaged, and is gendered in the French, with fiance meaning a male is engaged and fiancee (I don't have French characters but there should be the accent you see elsewhere) meaning a female is engaged. As is usual, the plural defaults to fiances, since the male thing sort of trumps it all traditionally. These days, I would say pick your own most appropriate gender or term--

I think we should ditch gendering it given we have non-binary folks getting married now. Gendering it just makes it non-inclusive.

She’s a keeper!

jrock_new•

It’s gorgeous, she did an awesome job. But, can we discuss the difference between “handmade” and “handcarved”? I’m curious if she actually carved the designs by hand?

65
NeedBeeerOPWarlock•

Sure. Rough shapes were carved using either a jig saw or drill and the rest was carved by hand to include the 'centerpiece'

43
jrock_new•

Very impressive. I’d call that hand carved. I wasn’t trying to judge, just curious. My dad was a carpenter and labored over making some beautiful thing by hand. I’m not against CNC routing that yields very nice, high detail stuff, but the artistry is different. It all about rendering the design as opposed actually making it with ones hands.

31
NeedBeeerOPWarlock•

Oh, no offense taken and I do appreciate the distinction. Chick is no joke though. Check out u/rachelunderwoodart

25
jrock_new•

Wow, very talented. Although I was expecting more wood art such as this and fewer oil paintings involving penetration. Again no offense, she definitely is talented.

18
blharg•

Agreed, handcarved to me would be using blades and chisels, handmade would allow the use of power tools like a router. The details that have gone into this still show a lot of care and would still show a lot of care and skill went into the creation.

RedRedditor84•

Hand carved means she did it with her fingernails and determination.

15
blharg•

now that would be impressive as hell

5
wwaxwork•

It only counts if the woman is a beaver & carved it with her teeth..

laughingdakini•

ahaha!

bumofthefuture•

This is so gorgeous, i wish i had these skills with carving!

3
RichKix_TheBardDM•

This... is amazing. She’s extremely talented. Can I just ask, because I wanted to do this too (and I’m a complete novice...), is that done with three pieces of wood as the bases for the screen, and then the design/top layer are separate pieces of wood (glued on)? Or is it just three pieces of wood with carvings in them?

3
NeedBeeerOPWarlock•

They all came from one big piece of wood. That was then made into the three panels, in 2 layers (6 pieces). The top pieces were then designed and shaped and overlayed on the bottom layers.

4
DungunMaster•

Full on irl jaw dropped. Seriously incredible work. I don't know shit about woodworking but I can tell this is super well made.

3
NeedBeeerOPWarlock•

2
laughingdakini•

That is really lovely work. How thoughtful of her, plus really cool. Thanks for showing us.

2
Deceptikhan42•

So she should be selling these if she isn't already.

2
NeedBeeerOPWarlock•

Traditional fine arts are her first love, though she seems capable of anything. I'll let her know you think so :)

1
Deceptikhan42•

Yeah i showed it to my son and he nearly.lost his mind and said, that might be better than Matt Mercer's screen. He then asked me how much they were. So I will ask you, how much would it be to commission on of these for an xmas present?

1
NeedBeeerOPWarlock•

I will ask, though I'm sure the answer is pretty pricey.

1
RandomPerson2793•

Absoluetly amazing! Your a lucky fella! May you both have many happy years togethor.

2
JustARandomGuy031•
