if i was a hooker
IF I WAS A HOOKER
if i was a hooker
then I’d know the things to say
i’d know the things to do
to keep the feelings out of the way
i’d tempt you in the evenings
let you fill me up with words
then wake up in the mornings
pretending i’d never heard
if i was a hooker
i wouldn’t care if she called
my heart would be obsidian
black
shiny
not soft at all
if I was a hooker
i would take you in deep inside me
let you pound out all the pain
use me
fuck me
take me
ride me
you could do the things we love to do
with no thought of my soul
i could easily watch you walk away
no problem letting go
so leave a dollar on the nightstand
i think next time you should pay
to talk with me
to sit with me
to fuck with me
to pretend to love with me
as we play these games we play.

WOW I posted this before work this morning and was very surprised to open Reddit to see all of the commentary on this poem. THANK YOU for all of the comments and feedback. It is very interesting to read the ways that folks interpreted this. This was written from a place of unrequited love. The narrator wishes to be able to feel nothing...only to be near the one she loves knowing that he enjoys her but does not want more than those physical pleasures experienced together. She is asking her lover to pay a dollar for her body while she gives him her soul. I did get a dollar by the way. It’s still by my nightstand. 💜🙏🏽 Thanks for all of the support here and all of the visits to my blog today. More to come! xx

I love this for a lot of reasons. I think you humanized sex work in a way that I would never have thought to (not sure if that was your goal). The last few lines were completely unexpected for me, because I thought you would continue with the hooker being this person who doesn't need or want emotional attachment. But I'm interpreting it as the hooker really craving the same thing that those who reach out to sex workers often want - like an emotional and a physical connection. I also, after reading it a few times, thought it was interesting that you chose to write "you could do the things we love to do" and not "you could do the things you love to do". great work:)
