Totally predictable, we're all wearing masks and socially distancing. Flu season will always be at least dulled with those circumstances.

To add, Everyone is constantly washing their hands, staying at home when they are sick, high touch areas are either avoided or excessively cleaned...

Partly right ... the Flu went south for winter as there is no one here to infect with the masks and all.

If current protocol eradicated the flu, why is covid rising right now?

I think that's a transmissibility issue. I could be wrong, but I think Covid is more contagious and easier to transmit. I think the asymptomatic factor is a culprit in the Covid spread and not so much in a 72 hour flu that usually kicks in within a day.

It isn't and you not being able to understand extremely basic facts about how Covid spreads does not change that.

Based on your post, you clearly think that all viruses are made equal. This is incorrect.

6
sarcasmeau•

Zero lab confirmed cases doesn't mean we don't have any flu cases.

A lack of international travel, increased personal health protocols (hand washing, masks, distancing, forced time at home when sick), and vaccinations are all contributing to this observation.

Critical questions to ask are who is being tested currently and how was that population typically tested in the past.

If the predominant numbers of tests are in the elderly, then it is fully to be expected for numbers to be low - the senior population has the most restrictive protocols (long term care limitations on visitors, stringent isolation protocols etc).

It was a great read! Very happy to see we are mitigating a risk for sure. More so referring to OP’s biased view on the state of the pandemic in Alberta.

-11†

Lotta factors involved in this:

Protocols not seen since the Spanish flu in masks, gloves, social distancing

Next to nil travel

Flu spreading hotspots have been curtailed

Substantial increase in flu shots this year

Available manpower for testing has been diverted to covid testing (which has also struggled to keep up still)

People who are sick are afraid to either 1) go to the hospitals for fear of catching covid 2)admit they are sick for fear of reprocussions 3) exacerbating the healthcare system further

They are likely not reporting on it since there's more pressing issues. I have at least 2 friends in the last 3 weeks who got tested while sick and they came back negative, so where are they in the numbers

13
Shadow_Ban_Bytes•

Next to nil travel That may be true for driving to the US, but I'm pretty sure there are lots of travelers coming and going from Canada.

4
captainmavro•

Incorrect. As of July, air travel to Canada is down 95% YOY. Unless you think 5% is a lot of travel.

While it is nice to see that we have had no flu cases yet, this could become a problem. This may lead the ‘Covid is the flu’ crowd to believe they are right even more.

6
gammaglobe•

Or it may prompt some to realize that infectious diseases are a part of life. Normal part of interaction with the outside world. That if you "combat" something (at least on surface) the nature will give something else to keep the evolution going.

Maybe one day you will accept that humans isolating themselves from nature is the problem.

Maybe you can allow a thought that if one were to leave in an incubator cell like a sterile animal one would start developing other pathologies like autoimmune bowel diseases, arthritis and whatnot.

throounyforfun4d67Alberta Party•

I mean edited headline.... and its a small but meaningful difference...detected to none.

That said, with COVID precautions in place I guess this was expected

4
tcinyyc•

Was it really expected, though? Zero cases? A decrease in cases...sure. But zero?

0†
throounyforfun4d67Alberta Party•

I don't know, zero detected cases? Perhaps.

Bull shit alert, below is my understanding, no sources, could be false.

But given all these variables combined, seemed possible:

  • We have implemented safety measures that our society has never seen before.
  • The flu surveillance program is likely reduced due to COVID testing,
  • the odds of getting sick enough from the flu to be caught by the program in normal times isn't high
    • This to me has a compound reduction effect, given the exponential growth in cases virus have, fighting them to me would lead to a exponential reduced amount of cases from the norm. So if you had (bullshit stats warning) a 1:10chance of getting the flu, and a 1:1000 chance of being detected by the province, a 1:100 chance of getting the flue this year means a 1:100,000 chance of being detected, ignoring the other variables in this list.
  • We have over 200,000 more AB's have the flu shot this year than last year at this point
    • Article points to a 2019 record, though, that implies it is for the entire flu season, not season to date given we are beating last year (2019), we are on pace for record shots
  • The article states the following, meaning it sounds like we are later then norm but not that far beyond a norm:
    • The start of flu season typically varies each year, meaning it isn’t entirely unusual to not have seen a case of the virus through most of fall.
  • Edit: Flu also is imported, as another user said. With historical reduction in international travelling, less likely to get it

AcesNixon007•

Flu and Covid are now one didn’t you know. You got the flu? Just mark it as Covid on that sheet there please!

Generally thrives in colder climates, passing back and forth from northern to southern hemisphere as the seasons change. main point that seams to not be discussed.

This is 100% correct.

AHS and ALL of the applicable staff required to pull this off are in cahoots with the environmental lobby. The amount of people needed to make these "FAKE NUMBERS" is so large, there is no way this would have leaked if it was true. So it has to be true.

EVERYONE knows lab tech, doctors, medical admins and senior AHS leadership are secretly working for greenpeace. I haven't met a conservative doctor in my life. I mean, I have met some who said they were, but we all know they were lying to keep their secret that they want a green new deal

We also know that Kenney and the UCP, who provide oversight and direction on how COVID is managed are anti-business and extremely concerned about global warming. This is why they bought a portion of a new pipeline to the states, to kill it!

And as for 2nd amendment rights.... I ... that might be a mistake given our location

level 1smoking_iscoolScore hidden·13 minutes ago

That's because they are counting them all as Covid to get the FAKE NUMBERS up so they can implement the green new deal and take away your 2nd amendment rights

7
[deleted]•

Oh wow I had no idea Greenpeace was involved but it totally makes sense. Notely was letting them run the economy before the UCP came in so it would have been easy for them to become part of the deep state!
