I've wanted to try both the Corne keyboard and Kailh Choc V2 switches for a while, so as soon as I saw the latest version of the Corne Light I ordered some of both.

While I am happy with how it looks, I will have to use it for a few days before I know what to think of the switches.

Pretty cool! The thing I miss the most on my corn, is that I can't fit classic MX keycaps on it. OTOH I saved a lot of money ^^

Did you use an adapter to mount mx keycaps on choc switches?

scalatronn•

No, it's choc v2 so mx switches work afaik

Cool, I completely missed that.

Oh does the keycap hit the pcb at all, or can it fully bottom out? I’ve never seen a choc v2 build yet

jamesmnwOP•

They clear the PCB and the TH diodes. Could have been an issue with a plate, but this is a plateless build.

Are the Choc V2 higher than the Choc V1?

1
jamesmnwOP•

Yes. They feel about halfway between a choc 1 and an mx. Spec sheet is here: http://m.kailhswitch.com/uploads/202015927/PG135301D03.pdf?rnd=874

Those look like regular MX keycaps, so no way there's 3.2mm available below them.

Really curious to know the switches and key caps used here

The switches are Kaihl choc v2 browns. The keycaps are EnjoyPBT Cherry profile something-or-others.

Looks like OG ANSI doubleshots. Nevermind

This is so flat, nice!

But, the latest version of the corne light is 6 columns without a breakable outer column, no? Did you cut it by hand or modified the gerber to have a 5 column corne?

1
jamesmnwOP•

The version I had JLCPCB make, which I am pretty sure is the latest, has the breakable outer column. I think Foostan re-added it.

That would be the non-final one, I ordered that. OP waited for the proper release from foostan.

This is first time I see a corne built with outer columns broken out. AFAIK, no cases exist for this configuration.

I might have a 5 column case somewhere in my workshop

3
jamesmnwOP•

No, neither, but I have not done a whole lot of research and am not so worried about getting one at this stage. Maybe it would be possible to do something like this in the future: https://github.com/MelindaBirkenstock/Ferris-Slip-On-Case.

The closest thing I can think of is the Cornish Zen, which is a compact low-profile wireless keyboard based on the Corne.

I’m pretty sure splitkb has acrylic cases for that. Edit: nvm I tho k they removed it from the shop.

Nice!

How do you find the Choc V2s?

1
jamesmnwOP•

Well I have been using them today and so far I like them quite a lot.

The board feels only slightly higher than my low profile split, but it is nice to have both a firm tactile bump, and the familiar feel and curve of Cherry keycaps.

Thanks! Very hard to find opinions on the Choc V2 brown tactility.

Could you share the correct shape and size for mounting plate holes? Also do you know if 1.5 mm thick plate would be suitable for mounting switches?

I've just got my 10 pcs choc v2 sample pack and talking with some laser cutting company to make holes with different sizes so I can test fit. It would save me some time and money.

1
jamesmnwOP•

14x14mm square holes. Same as MX. The spacing between holes is 19.05mm. Most keycap profiles will not work with a plate though as the keycap will hit the plate before the switch bottoms out. I haven't been able to test rigorously but it should just work with Cherry.

2

Any tips on plate thickness? I am planning to use steel plate of 1.5 mm as this is suggested by a laser company to produce good results regarding cut accuracy. And unfortunately steel plates comes with limited range of thickness.

1
jamesmnwOP•

Yes that would work. I recommend testing with FR4 first though. For example, you could probably get 5 of the above Corne Light pcbs and plates from jlcpcb printed and delivered for around €50 then sell the leftovers on mechmarket.

1

I'll test it. €50 is way too much to test it for me. I have agreement with laser cutting company that they put my mini plate cutout (like for 4 caps) when they will cut from 1.5mm steel plate and I'll pay only for my part. I can wait for this a couple of weeks but it'll cost me like €5 or something + shipping.

Thanks for all the info.

This looks good. I wonder what it's like typing on GMK keycaps with such a short travel distance.

Biggest thing I don’t like is soldered switches

There's not a whole lot of choices for this kind of switch: red, brown, blue. Even if there were a hotswap option there's little reason to bother.

Choc V2 fit into Choc V1 hot swap socket.
