[MTGO] Wizard's is selling god accounts that last for most of January
If you anyone wanted to try eternal formats on mtgo you can have access to every card for a couple weeks for 25$ by buying the "mythic event token"

This should be available as a subscription
I really hope this is them testing the waters for offering subscription god accounts.
that would be utterly backbreaking for the entire economy behind Modo. It would not only kill off Manatraders et al but also deppreciate all of the digital magic card value. If they do it, that would not be a smart move.
The assumption that digital cards need to have value is a pretty big LUL if you ask me.
They do not necessarily need to have value but on Modo they do - the entire system is set up in a way that your collection needs to have value. Also, people spent thousands of Dollars aquiring those cards due to the system forcing them to.
THATS A GOOD THING THESE PEOPLE ARE PREYING ON YOU AND WIZARDS IS EXPERIMENTING ON CUTTING OUT THE SECONDARY MARKET SO THEY CONTROL THE COST TO PLAY.
Yeah the fact that people are worried about manatraders and ticket sellers....like we’re talking about 10-20 people total making a shit ton of profit buying low and selling high with an automated system and manipulating card prices to sustain this market. These people are hurting the play experience but the players Stan for them anyways because of familiarity with those businesses. That’s literally it.
Maybe it lets them keep up with market trends not apparent front side. I have to imagine there's changes happening and more scrutiny than before. They've repeatedly proved they like to run live trials before going all in on things.
If they decide they're losing too much money to rental services it would make sense to conquer the market with their unlimited resources. How many successful rental companies are there now? Mana traders, cardhoarder..?
I don't know, seems like a good move for them if whales are all flocking to arena for their gambling fix and everyone still on mtgo is using it as a stock market.
The total amount made by all dealers on MTGO combined - traditional and rental - should be absolutely miniscule to what WOTC should be making on MTGO (and I assume, is making). Of course, I only have access to our data - and not WOTC's - but the "amount of money lost" having a secondary market - something which allows WOTC to charge $4 a booster, and offer cards (treasure chests) as prizes - should be pretty much irrelevant.

I agree.
People want this “subscription” because presumably this $25/month is cheaper than what they would spend to keep up their MtGO habit. This is also to say WotC would get less profit doing this than through existing business model. It really makes no sense for WotC to keep this option on a permanent basis, especially with the lawsuits it would also invite.
What lawsuit do you think would have half a chance? Do you really think they leave themselves open with how huge and regularly updated their ToS is?
What lawsuits would providing a $25/month subscription invite?
My whole playgroup would do mtgo if they had a subscription option. We all have a couple modern decks in paper and would love to play online when we can’t meet up. It’s a tough ask for us to buy our decks in paper and digitally. A subscription base would allow us to try other decks too. Wouldn’t even mind paying to play in the daily’s if they went this way.
Wizards is losing all the money that manatraders is making offering this same service
Nah, this is them giving a taste of the product "for free."
If you want more of it, then you'll have to pay.

Then no one would need to buy singles, and the MTGO economy would truly come to an end.
Good.
The game should be f2p with a sub and pay per draft
People just worried about the value of their collection and not the good of the game
I'd prefer the leagues be pay to enter still, It's nice to have an incentive to win/finish the league. Going 5-0 feels great. If you don't want to pay you can play for free already anyways.
With nothing on the line people just concede against decks they don't want to play or when they punt, the free rooms on mtgo are awful.
The people who remained buying singles on mtgo with this shitty model of wizards printing a cards that overwhelm the meta and cost 80tix every few months to then get banned are only doing it because they love the game, and it would be near impossible to make them stop playing.
The people who aren't are already on manatraders/cardhoarder, so all an official version would do is bring in more players
Is just hard to foresee how that transition looks. If no one's buying singles, Treasure Chests lose most of their value, which means that most of the prizes for constructed events become worthless. WoTC will have to be very nimble (which doesn't seem likely) to adjust the prizing on the fly as that part of the economy collapses. Otherwise, all the events that people are buying the Mythic Pass to compete in suddenly have wildly negative EV, and the Mythic Pass feels like a scam.
Would love to get u/goatbots and u/cardhoarder in this thread, to see their takes on it.
Note that card rental services don't have this problem, because the rental bots still have to buy the cards from drafters and Treasure Chest openers. WoTC obviously doesn't have to do that.
It certainly would require a complete overhaul of the system; IMO, this is what Arena was made for - an entirely different economic model. It seems odd to me to try it consistently on MTGO when every card ever sold on MTGO was subject to a different economic model; but, I do think having it on occasion is interesting, too. They've been monetizing the second-hand market via Treasure Chests for many years, and this would probably fly in the face of that.
What most people will find, I believe, is that whatever they do end up doing for these "god accounts" - the price point at which WOTC would do it is no where near a point that brings in new people to the game. The WOTC economic model of Paper/MTGO thrives because of the revenue per user; you can't make either one super cheap without bringing a massive amount of new users. Whether or not you believe MTGO can do that I guess would be a question mark, but it would require some pretty major investments on WOTC's part - similar to what we've seen for Arena - to even attempt it.
