Forgetting to use Neutral Game abilities

Question

Context: I mostly play Toptree Dawnblade but have dabbled in the art of Kamehameha (ChaosReach). I feel like I'm forgetting to use some of my subclass abilities.

So the question is: If I consistently forget to use my Heat Rises ability as a TopDawn should I just stay away from the subclass? I feel like I'm not using the subclass to its greatest effect seeing as I'm accidentally forgetting to use 25-50% of my neutral game perks like Heat Rises and that perk that generates ability energy from airborne kills.

In my opinion, heat rises is the least attractive of all top dawn perks. Unless you're a crack sniper, it's probably best to use those grenades instead of eating them. I think you're fine being a top dawn who doesn't utilize heat rises...

I know two crack snipers (2.2+ Trials players) who use top tree Dawn. One uses Heat Rises liberally and the other I’ve never seen proc it a single time.

Moral of the story, that class is outstanding and you don’t need to use Heat Rises unless you want to.

much appreciated, I kinda feel somewhat similarly with most of the subclasses I use cause it always feels like there is something I'm forgetting.

Must keep improving

I honestly believe Heat Rises hurts more players than it helps.

Totally agree. Unless you have god tier awareness and pre-aim ability, you're a sitting duck up there.

Agreed. Personally I use firebolt grenades for quick primers/cleanups or in a wombo combo with the ranged melee.

You can eat your grenade prior to popping your super and it greatly lessens the cost of dashing in super.

For real? That is very good to know!

can be quite fun with a fusion to nail someone from mid air, they just dont expect it

Fellow top-tree dorkwad here. I forget to use healing or empowering rifts and never use heat rises. I use Wings of Sacred Dawn, which do about the same thing without warning people with a special map icon. I get a lot of kills from the air. Try Telesto with WoSD. Or an SMG with Surplus.

Just make sure your icarus dash is mapped to a single button your finger is always on. And your jump. Then You can dodge any direction in any situation, instantly, by hitting both at once. That is the biggest power of dawnblade.

Wait, a special map icon?

If an enemy is in the air they show up as a red dot.

3
Simulation_Brain•

A big flashing red dot. Just like a vehicle.

3
DynamicExitOP•

wait a sec... does heat rises still turn you into a "vehicle?"

1
Simulation_Brain•

Did they change that? Like I said, I don’t use it bc Wings

1
DynamicExitOP•

I think previously it was a bug in PvE areas cause enemies would "forget" that you were killable because you were a "vehicle". No idea if this also happens on the radar in PvP

Alternatively, on console at least, you can map Icarus to a hold press of whatever your jump button is also mapped to and just hold the jump button instead of needing to press two buttons. Just hold jump while on the ground while pressing any direction.

I know there's that "super dash" you can get by activating burst glide on descent and cancelling it with icarus but I believe using this method will activate it in the air every time. Just press and hold jump at the apex of your jump.

Interesting!

The most I would say is try to at least jump before using celestial fire to get ability energy back but beyond that I wouldn't push to really go for using heat rises more

7
Simulation_Brain•

Oh man I never do this. You’re right, it would be a great habit to develop.

The class is worth using for Icarus Dash alone as well as celestial fire. I Honestly don't use Heat Rises a ton when I've played Top Tree Dawn myself. I've mainly used it for getting away from supers safely lol. If you get good with it then it can absolutely be a game changer though.

Icarus dash is an absolute S-tier perk, and makes the entire class worth it even if you don't use another piece of of. I believe (there might be other ways) that it's the only movement ability that a suck-nade doesn't cancel. That alone is worth using the class.

Now you add in the best melee ability in the game, which 50% recharges if you jump before firing it, and you're in a really good place.

Heat rises? I mean, once in a while, on an outdoor map, it can be fun to use to try to fake some one out, or if you're some awesome sniper floating off the map can be fun, but the only time I really use it is if I think I need my in-air accuracy for something critical, like jump shooting someone on a capture point. More often than not, getting them dead or off the capture point with the grenade is a better use though.

CowTussler•

Never knew about the melee recharging 50% if you jump before that! Damn, is it really true?

2
conipto•

yeah look at the details on the perk - it's meant for being used in air

Personally, I use top tree's grenade for kills more than I do for Heat Rises.

As a top tree dawn player who usually shotguns, I think it’s perfectly fine if you don’t use heat rises often- I usually use it once or twice at most per match, and that depends on the map. I think normal solar grenades are a very solid part of neutral game, even without heat rises.

I do think that you could be trying to get more in air kills, but that’s not necessary, and it also depends if you’re using a legendary or exotic because of icarus- If you’re using an exotic primary, I wouldn’t go for too many in air kills. Also don’t go for in air kills for the sake of getting in air kills- Go for them to take off angles, and when you do float, make sure you’re near cover and not out in the open

Imo, with top tree dawn, as long as you’re taking full advantage of icarus dash for both its speed and evasiveness, it’s absolutely worth playing.

LN2_Der_Echte•

TTD main here. Don't use heat rises that often unless you have a really good angle. This subclass is the best cuz of Icarus dash and being able to shoot while gliding.

SwitchSouthpaw•

its also very situational depending on the type of map youre playing. in javelin 4 and dead cliffs you can hang almost outside the map and snipe.

I mainly use heat rising to float around corners and unleash jotunn on unsuspecting guardians below. I get bagged a lot.

I use empowering rift with double healing grenades often and when played right they’re great. I main top tree Dawn normally though and don’t often underutilize abilities since the neutral game is the reason to run it. I ALWAYS forget to use/take advantage of devour on voidwalker. This is a PvE thing for me though but if there is one subclass I do this with, it’s that one.

Sometimes something like that will click with me, sometimes it won’t.

If you can’t use the gimmick/ability, don’t put too much resources into it. Improve in other areas first.

I appreciate all the responses in here (did NOT expect that many tbh). I'm starting to like this little corner of Reddit more than Playbook (though that has some good info as well).

If you're playing top tree dawnblade and playing mostly on the ground - then yeah you should switch to a different class that will be better suited to your playstyle.

If you're just not using heat rises - I don't think that alone is enough to say that you shouldn't play the class.
