Stay In Control

Stay in control.

Wake up at six.

Eat salad without the dressing.

Do fourteen squats.

Swallow the pills

that read “appetite-suppressing”.

Stay in control.

Drink coffee black.

Don’t cry ‘till after your shift.

Small talk with Claire.

Laugh at Ben’s jokes.

Take stairs, but never the lift.

Stay in control.

Look before crossing.

Spare change to buy the Big Issue.

Take aspirin

to dull your pain.

Ignore that blood in your tissue.

Stay in control.

Avoid the mirror.

Wear clothes that cover your bloat.

Eat a thin mint...

maybe another.

Stick a finger down your throat.

Stay in control.

Bedtime at ten.

Codeine for some light sedation.

Distract your thoughts

with a good book,

Netflix shows, and masturbation.

Stay in control.

Turn off your light.

Ponder on how you’re trapped,

like a battery-farm chicken,

drunk on antibiotics

in the dirty mesh cage

that's your own fucking mind.

And the only things you can control

are the numbers on the scales

and the numbers on your fitness tracker.

So choke down a cocktail

of every shitty pill

you’ve ever managed to scavenge

and pray to God

that tomorrow will be different.

And drift to sleep.

Stay in control.

Wake up at six.

...Wake up at six?

whew, after settling into the rhythm, the italicized section (good job on taking advantage of the formatting options) was intense! i typically don’t like curse words in poetry, but your “fucking” and “shitty” helped convey, along with the removal of rhythm, how the speaker was spiraling. in a word, nice.

Thank you friend!

The way you begin every stanza with "stay in control" works to emphasize the circular nature of the protagonist's thoughts. It also serves as the constant background to which the natural ebb and flow of her will power is contrasted.

I don't know Ben or his jokes, but I assume they are not funny.

I do wonder, though, if the "I" of this poem could pick up a benign 'addiction' or a new hobby to distract herself. Maybe she could get hooked on playing Fifa 2021 online with strangers, or she could start taking some master naturalist courses at the nearest state park. You know.. fill her mind with a new obsession and something else to think about throughout the day, because our will power can't sustain constant labor throughout a whole day.

Thank you for your feedback! The "I" of the poem is ok really!! And Ben's jokes are not funny

And we wonder why we "lose control" when this is how we have defined it for ourselves. Hyper vigilance against unwanted impulses cultivates chronic thought patterns upon the subject; what a great exposure to that rote and grindstone.

My assumption is that we did not wake up at 6a.m.

More: its often when we are alone without anything to 'see' that we find the truth in what is happening underneath our conscious control. And if its scary, if the truth is scary, then that can be the hardest time of day.

Loved the read. Enjoyed the pacing. Enjoyed the juxtaposition of the tone between italics and normal text: for me, the real persona is italicized, the normal formatting is a dead man

Thank you very much for your thoughts!! Yes the poem was hinting that the narrator never woke up, and yes the italicized is meant to be the real persona breaking through

This poem made me feel like I was in a movie about some average Joe doin the 9-5. You went pretty in depth and it seemed like it was an exact description of your life that many people can relate with. I don’t relate too much but I can picture how it feels to feel that way. Seems like a shitty time. But everything has its positives and negatives and I think the creation of this poem is the positive.

We are sieamese if you please, and we are sieamese when we don't please. I am not one to stop a fight that I have been egging on since I couldnt jump off that tank in the middle of the park when I was 9... Or some age of inconsequence. One is the answer I have but I see why it's better with all the words of a good life aty disposal. If people were as disposable as lust and drugs with the curtains drawn, ignore the 3 dots, I shit everywhere. You sound healthy. And that's all I have to say about that.. I lied, don't fight. I tried, I'm down to live a day longer. Not a troll.

I feel like I have been flashed a bit of creation at some event where I all thought to expect was nudity and a vulgar appetite. I am still gonna say have a plan even though I don't. I can look like a simp for the truth, I don't mind. Find me . I want to talk with you about you and what that means.

Amazing! You were massively influenced by Fitter Happier though, right? Not a criticism, just a question.

Siamese_DreamingOP•

Hahaha yes when I was writing I was like hang on this reminds me of that song, then I took some inspiration, especially with the antibiotics bit, you got me 🤣

doesn't take anything away from it! it's a great poem, it's more cohesive than Fitter Happier so it's nicer to read. top stuff :)

Thank you I'm glad you like it, I did think maybe I should change the part that was inspired by it but I don't think radiohead would care much 🤣 also well done for picking that up, I love OK computer
