How to fend off JNMIL & (sometimes) JNMOM

Advice Wanted

So ladies and gents I have to thank you for your help again for the stroller debacle. She wanted all 3 of us (of course why would it NOT include her!) to put it together, nagged until we left “just in case there is something missing”. 👌🏼 I won the war, chose my battles. She was still huffy over not getting what she wanted, so she sat there while SO and I put it together in 10 min. I am sure she wanted us to act like children and beg for help haha. Anyway - to the point - 1- after it was done being assembled, she wanted to push it around the house, while doing that she said loudly “ohhh I am stealing you awayyy!” Like a baby was already in there. I have anxiety about anyone touching my little one while she is here, so that didn’t help. 2- we bought a frame to send pictures to her when LO finally arrives (we live a State away). Night before we left it was “I expect pictures every day.” 3- I don’t like the center of attention. She spent a lot on clothes and wanted us to open them, specifically me, and take pictures while that happened. I put the focus on my SO instead and said, “here babe, you should have some fun too!” She said “ you just have to make everything difficult.” I did tell her right there “yeah, well, I hate the center of attention and hate pictures being taken...so I guess that’s difficult.” 4- told me she is going “take a ride up” when my mom visits. After telling her I don’t know when things will be safe enough and we will wait until she has all her vaccinations first.” 5- again, night before we left: “so we should see you guys around Thanksgiving.”

I am just uber frustrated. I told this woman I don’t know when we are coming back (can it be never?). Also, like I said, I have this mama bear/protection thing happening already and I don’t want her to be passed around the dinner table like a football, on a holiday, in these crazy times. I already told SO that we aren’t staying there anymore, for many reasons, but my hill to die on is because his mother smokes...in every room of the house, including the enclosed front porch. Just another reason to keep her away. I have seen first hand the manipulation she instilled over the years with my SO, so I told him it will be the last time she will see her if I am given any hint of that happening with LO. Please give me advice with how to deal with visiting relatives who are also saying “you can’t keep that little girl away from us.” Can I push her out first?! Feeling overwhelmed, pushed around and that makes me want to protect her more and to dig my heels in. If you read this far, thank you. I have no one else to talk to about this honestly.

"Mil you sure are acting very entitled over a child who isn't yours and isn't even earth side yet. It sounds like you need space to work on your own issues that you have. I pray that you can overcome them for the sake of a healthy relationship with us and with kiddo.

You do not dictate my life. You do not demand us for holidays, you invite us. You will not make any more jokes about stealing my child. And you will stop pressuring me into things I am uncomfortable with. If you cannot handle these simple boundaries then you will not be around me or my child. Period. I refuse to let my child see poor behavior modeled by those who are supposed to love kiddo."

27
SecretAgentBeanOP•

That last sentence got me teary-eyed. This is not what healthy love looks like- I did not improve on myself and “fixed” my issues for her to have them from someone else. All of this! Thank you, that’s what it’s about.

You and SO need to make sure you are on the same page regarding concerns you both have. Talk about all of these things openly. Start a list of what you both see as problems and prioritize them from “hill to die on” to “might be willing to let it slide”.

Then you discuss, come up with answers to your list and you set boundaries. That means both you and SO have a script “no one will visit until LO is vaccinated and visitors are up to date on vaccines including COVID. No exceptions.” And if anyone tried to talk you out of it “our rules stand. If you continue to harass us then you’ll be in time out and it will be even longer before you may visit”. You need a response for each issue.

Other things to think of:

Don’t give her the specific due date

Password protect your info and LO

Don’t let anyone know when you are in labor or when LO arrives. Tell them a few days later.

If you are afraid she’ll just show up, get cameras. If she, or anyone else, shows up to your home you do not have to answer the door. If they make a scene call the police.

Make it clear that no one can just drop in, that when you do allow visitors no one will be staying with you in your home, and visits will be limited to one hour. No kissing or baby snatching or you are escorted out with no return date.

You will not be sending photos everyday nor will you take calls or FaceTime unless it is convenient for you.

In the end from her perspective you have a commodity that she desperately wants. So be ruthless and use that knowledge to your advantage. You have the high ground to set the rules.

Same goes for your mom.

Thank you for all these great suggestions and especially the validation- I was looking at the Ring as a video camera option for this exact reason!

It’s a great idea to list boundaries with SO now. I am 90% good to setting them with my own mother, but his is a new species LOL. He has trouble with just saying no to her because of his upbringing, so I think this list will be great. Like you said, keeps us on the same page. He is going to be with her after my maternity leave, so his lack of boundaries concerned me- this will put me more at ease when I cannot be there to push back.

10
beguilery•

Excellent suggestions all. I would add that you might start letting days elapse when answering her calls/messages so she doesn't guess that you're in labor when she doesn't hear back from you.

6
muzzledcrayon•

I think your new favorite phrase is about to become "that doesn't work for us".

MiL says she will see you at Thanksgiving? MIL says she is coming up uninvited? MiL demands pictures every day? "Oh, that doesn't work for us."

18
SecretAgentBeanOP•

I actually started repeating this aloud in the shower LOL working on my tone. It’s uncomfortable to be this way but like you said, she can want all she wants...doesn’t mean it’s gonna happen. Thank you !

13
Gnd_flpd•

Hey OP, also do it in front of the mirror, that way you can master your expressions better. I think it's time to get into "mama bear" mode.

5
SecretAgentBeanOP•

That’s an excellent idea. Great suggestion!

3
BlueVacating•

When I was first learning to stand up to my JNMIL, I wrote out a list of things I could say, and taped it inside the bathroom mirror door. And stared at it every time I brushed teeth. They get familiar quickly that way.

2
WitchyWoo7•

“That doesn’t work for us” was wonderful with my JNMIL. Just kept repeating it. The first few times were a bit uncomfortable. After that it was easier to say no.

5

I wonder if it would help to adopt the blanket rule of “anything you push for is an automatic no.” This would mean that anything presented as a demand or expectation, or is asked about repeatedly will be completely denied. For example:

JN: “I need a picture every day!” You: “That will never happen. The more you ask about pictures, the less you will get.”

JN: “The stroller must be put together right now! I need to see it.” You: “Let’s put this box away. We won’t be assembling the stroller until we are alone.”

Your partner will need to be on the same page as you and you will both need to be rigid about it for it to work. They will whine and protest that you are no fun, since it is basically your strategy with the pictures amplified, but if you don’t care how they feel and can remain strong, they might quit eventually because they will see you as a brick wall.

These pushy people are just used to bulldozing everyone to get what they want. They will apply pressure again and again to try to weaken their target until they crumble. It seems like you naturally have a strength to you when you feel you are being pushed around; embrace it!

You are likely a nice person who doesn’t want to hurt anyone, so you would probably prefer to nicely explain things to them and have them accept it, but they aren’t allowing you to do that. If they only thing they respect is brute force, that is all you can give them.

15

She hears the words you're saying. She just doesn't like them. Actions speak louder than words. When she starts pressing, you, what's to stop you from muting your phone? If she shows up at your door, don't answer. If they say, "you can't keep that little girl away from us", ask if they're trying to threaten you. If yes, go from there. If no, "Then do not say anything like that again to me." End of conversation.

Then again, I'm a bit direct as a person.

14
SecretAgentBeanOP•

I want to be like you! I am so tired of being in the position to not rock the boat. They want to be asses and controlling, but I can’t stand up for what I don’t want?

8

With the kiddo on the way, you and your SO are going to want to decide what interacting with their parents to look like. The three of you (You, SO, LO) are a family unit. That means something different than (SO, Parental units) being a family. They left that household. Unless you decide where the line is and what is important enough to rock the boat about, you're looking at sacrificing a lot personally. On top of that, it can turn into your LO paying the price for a lack of action.

Get mama bear! If only for the LO

8
SecretAgentBeanOP•

That would be a fantastic shirt: “If only for the LO” 💪🏻

It looks like we need to get on the same page but moreso in writing so he can see it in front of him. Thank you!!

5
Gnd_flpd•

OP you're the one with the baby everybody wants access to. Therefore you have the power, so to speak. Stop being tired and start getting pissed off at the lack of boundaries being shown. If ever there was a time to be "somewhat bitchy" and "unreasonable" is right now, you're the one about to have this baby, nobody else.

Edit: You mentioned "not rock the boat" you may find this illuminating

4
SecretAgentBeanOP•

Can you just follow me around throughout my day & give me that badass attitude I need? Haha Thank you for saying that. I am getting fed up and I already was, but now with this LO to protect, along with hormones being a special guest...it’s taken a lot to not be just as much of an asshole back.

I will definitely read this article when I am done with work- thank you for offering it!

3
Gnd_flpd•

No problem, some of these articles here have been very helpful to those that needed it. Far too often I read here about women that are with child and trying to do the right thing, but being around asses like the ones you describe make me want give you permission to allow your bitch flag to fly!!!! I know, nobody takes pleasure in being a bitch (well, some) but I think it can be cathartic to go off occasionally, the world won't end and you'll relieve some stress.

3
ProllyLolly•

“Who is keeping her away from you? You can come to my house and visit, just call first.”

You need to look into babywearing. It’s good for the baby and keeps others from grabbing her

12
Alan_Smithee_•

Easy for an internet stranger to say (ie, me,) but if a person keeps saying “you can’t keep her away from us” (perhaps once is an acceptable joke, I don’t know,) I’d be looking them in the eye and say “stop,” or “ok.”

Edited: I’m the flippant internet stranger.

1
ProllyLolly•

Easy for an internet stranger to judge an internet stranger.

It was just a suggestion, that’s all.

1
Alan_Smithee_•

Oh, I apologise. I didn’t mean you, I meant me (easy to say.)

I totally see why you read it that way. Mea culpa.

1
ProllyLolly•

Oh, I misunderstood! My apologies!

1
[deleted]•

Babywearing! Baby snatching MILs hate it

12
[deleted]•

Them: "You can't keep little one away from us!
You: I can. First of all, stop smoking.

My kiddo would not be around smokers and that's not up for discussion.

YOU are the parent and you can shove her right out of your life if you so wish. For something as minor as "I don't particularly like you".

This is YOUR life, and YOUR kiddo and YOUR hubby, if you don't want to engage his mother in any way, then you don't have to, and neither does kiddo. The one you will have to agree with is hubby.

But I too would stand my ground and choose outside for the absolutely-have-to visits with her. Smoker and all that.

11
SecretAgentBeanOP•

That’s what I am thinking too! Not to be like this BUT there have been studies about 1st, 2nd and 3rd hand smoke - nothing is “better” for you, it sucks!

She smoked 1.5 packs a day with him while pregnant.

She is smoking while going thru cancer treatments.

When will it be a good reason?? Probably never. The minute you hit the door, you smell it. It’s in the walls. Also another reason I don’t want to be there on holidays with my little one.

7
[deleted]•

You have every right to not want to be near second hand smoke yourself. Let alone kiddo. It's sad for those who can't stop smoking, but outside is a great alternative, and if they can't accept that, then that's a them problem. ;-)

7
Creative-Bee-963•

Congratulations on getting the stroller you want 👏. Your MIL sounds like such hard work, you sound like are handling her well. Is the photo frame one of the ones you send pictures to but she can't download? She can wish and make demands all she wants but you don't have to do them.

8
SecretAgentBeanOP•

Exactly that type of frame. We have been harping on the no-social media the whole pregnancy. So if someone violates that, no more pics. This sub has taught me well!

I just don’t know what to say back if/when she calls/texts me asking me for photos. I have thought about ignoring calls and texts. But if there is a phrase that you can suggest?

12
SandyQuilterOfficial AAMIL•

If you want to be gentle, I have found “I’ll see what I can do” works for me. Even when I KNOW that “what I can do” is “absolutely nothing.”

I’m also known to be a smart aleck so may I suggest a sarcastic tone and “Well, I AM a little busy these days. Doing what, you ask? Oh, rescheduling my shifts at the stripe club to when LO is sleeping, figuring out how to balance her stroller in JUST the right way at the edge of the swamp while I wrestle the gators, things like that.”

10
SecretAgentBeanOP•

I love that gentle phrase. That could work!

After a while I am sure I will need to use the sarcastic smart-assed remarks LOL you inspire me!

3
Creative-Bee-963•

They sound like such a brilliant invention, probably created by someone with relatives who kept violating the no social media rule.

Honestly with a new born your hands are going to be full and there were days I couldn't be arsed looking at my phone or replying to friends and family who I adore due to pure exhaustion, so you use some thing like...

"I have had my hands full and didn't even look at my phone today."

"Baby was sleeping all day so it would be the same photo as the last day."

"I'm functioning on very little sleep and it slipped my mind."

or you could simply be more straight forward and say something like "I appreciate you are so excited being a grandma but sending photos is low down on my list of priorities as my LO is my main priority and recovering from labour so please understand I will send you photos in my own time."

If all that fails get your SO to tell her to back off and give you a break as someone demanding things all the time is very stressful.

7
pienoceros•

She shouldn't be texting/calling you at all. If your husband wants her to have pictures it's his responsibility to send her pictures.

3

Politely or not inform mil that you will not be pestered/harassed/asked/bothered about them visiting UNTIL they have their shots. If mil doesn't like that option, she is really gonna hate when you do go full mama bear on her. And if she keeps pushing YOU, introduce her to mama bear BEFORE squish arrives. You certainly won't have time/or inclination to entertain mil AFTER squish gets here.

5
Dewhickey76•

Invest in a comfortable sling and wear LO at any gatherings.

5
Dashie1561•

I second this, bonus points if the bean approves

2
RoxyMcfly•

Look your SO needs to be able to tell him mother NO. It can't always be you, if he cant say it,, she will always be able to get him to do what she wants.

Your feelings are 100% valid.

I made the comment on the original post that when she said the stroller was for the baby, she probably meant it was for her. Wanting a specific stroller so bad as it was the type she would use and after her saying what she did about taking the baby away, holy RED FLAG!

Now she is telling you when she was coming and when you were going up. BS.

I'm not sure when your mom is coming, I'm assuming when the baby is born? If that is the case you need to tell your SO that this pregnancy and baby are all about you and him, but more importantly decisions that are to be made, will be done in the best interest of your needs and feelings because its your recovery and you getting situated at home and bond with baby. Ask him how he and his own mother would feel if your mom decided without asking to show up during his moms visit. Remind him that making choices based on how is mom is going to react or feel is not how to make decisions, and you are not responsible for her feelings.

You are entitled to your own time with your mom and if he cant say it you need to. Tell her that you want time with your mom and she can come up another time when you are ready. Period. You have to be your own advocate if SO won't.

For Thanksgiving, just keep saying what your saying till you are closer to it and then decide. You can't commit to something that is so far away. But if you do go, explain that Christmas will be with your mom.

She sounds like she will be trying to get all holidays and will be keeping score with how often your mom sees you all.

4
RoxyMcfly•

You do not owe anyone an explanation on keeping your baby safe, remember those who call you out and say your keeping baby away, are just being selfish and would rather put your kid at risk for their selfish gain.

The thing is you have to be direct with these people and say that you are the parent and you will make the decisions on the best interest of your family and they will have to accept it or not be in your life. The only people who have any rights to your kid are you and SO.

5
True-Ad-2217•

If she shows up without being invited, don’t open the door. Be very clear on what an invitation is and how you’ll extend an invitation when you are ready. It’s your first baby and you deserve to bind with her, if you need help you’ll let people know and when. Don’t back down and just tell it like it is, even if it has to be in a text message.

The biggest mistake I ever made was letting my exmil do what she wanted for peace sake. There will be no peace and they will just want more and more

4
Destiny89becomesme•

I can do what ever I want I’m her ONLY mother

Or

We can do what ever we want, we are her ONLY parents

Take your pick x

3
Twoteethperbite•

Many people here have written out a list of clearly defined boundaries. Send them to everyone so MIL doesn't feel singled out. Discuss with your SO what the consequences will be for pushing or breaking boundaries. Make sure he's on board.

To start your list: No grabbing the baby away from the mother. Ask first. When the mother asks for the baby back, give it back. No going into other rooms with the baby. No handing the baby around. Everyone needs to have had their shots and the Covid vaccine. No smoking in the house or near the baby ever. No photos posted on the net ever.

I'm sure people will add lots to this list.
