Forget

At first, I forgot a word,

then I forgot a name.

I've forgotten objects.

That's just normal claim.

Next, it was faces,

I couldn't recognize a feature.

I see them every day,

yet something was unfamiliar.

I forgot how to read.

The words looked muddled on a page.

Syllables were so foreign,

how am I supposed to earn a wage?

I think my mind is broken,

I know something isn't right.

Visited the doctor yet,

they can't diagnose my plight.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

As someone who has suffered a head injury, this really kind of hit me. It seems that this writer is describing the devastating impact on losing the person that they are and still being lucid enough to know it.

Honestly this seems like a poem about the plight of someone going through the early stages of dementia. Absolutely devastating and having known close family members going through it and ultimately succumbing to the disease, I felt this poem right off the bat.

Absolutely great work. Concise, to the point and direct.

This is really moving. You capture the feel of helplessness and normal things becoming impossible for someone with a head injury in my opinion. The line "That's just normal claim." is a bit awkward and hard to understand but I can figure out what you mean. Overall this is very well done.
