Large donation (1020 XMR) to the general fund

While the view key of the donation address is public, it seems nobody noticed that a large donation of 1020 XMR was made to the General donation Fund on the 18th of April, which was the 7th anniversary of the Monero chain&project.
The donation is split in several outputs, and we can't even be sure it's from a single entity.
But given the time/block concentration, you can draw your own conclusion.

I can also note that one of the single outputs was of 420 XMR. Which some people might attach funny meanings to.

That’s a whale alert I like. Thanks to generous anonymous donor(s).

Imagine the size of this whale from the donation, an anonymous donation of 1020 XMR.

Anonymous donations like this show impressive generosity, altruism and character. That this community has such individuals is very inspiring. Much respect.

The whole community is like this when it comes to XMR. This guys clearly generous with his coins and everyone who isn’t in that situation is generous with their knowledge and home made rigs to support it

Very generous!! An awesome community indeed. I didn't realise the view key of the donation address was public! Do you have a link to it anywhere?

The Monero donation address is:

Do you have a link to the key images?

9
Leadralan•

TIL: You need key images to view outgoing transactions.

Didn't know that before and created a view-only wallet to view the general donation fund. After scanning the whole blockchain it showed hundreds of incoming transactions (what a great community!) and a balance of ... 114749 XMR (49M USD). Wow!

After some research I found that the viewkey only shows incoming transactions, not outgoing!

selstaXMR Contributor •

Balance is incorrect until key images are imported, the balance is nowhere near 100k XMR :)

I don't think they're available

Wonder why that is?

Yes it is. I have that as a stress test view-only wallet in Monerujo. That wallet has lots of incoming txs and goes way back in time. Restoring it and watching the incoming funds through time is a mesmerizing experience, kinda like time travel. It also both humbles you and makes you happy of seeing it before so many people still to discover Monero.

I recommend the experience. Try it out!

Is there anywhere a tutorial?

I installed the cli for linus and added a view wallet:

./monero-wallet-clfrom-view-key myviewonlywallet

when entering the standard address to view the ccs wallet there is an error ...

Standard address: 888tNkZrPN6JsEgekjMnABU4TBzc2Dt29EPAvkRxbANsAnjyPbb3iQ1YBRk1UXgN5S9cQUiyoogDavup3H

Error: This is a subadress which can not be used here. (Diese Adresse ist eine Subadresse, welche hier nicht genutzt werden kann.)

In Monerujo it's really simple. Just hit + and choose to restore a view only wallet. You'd need to provide the main address:

44AFFq5kSiGBoZ4NMDwYtN18obc8AemS33DBLWs3H7otXft3XjrpDtQGv7SqSsaBYBb98uNbr2VBBEt7f2wfn3RVGQBEP3A

and the view key:

f359631075708155cc3d92a32b75a7d02a5dcf27756707b47a2b31b21c389501

And choose like block 10 or sth to scan from. Make yourself a nice coffee and watch the txs appear. It'll be the longest scroll you've ever seen in your phone.

Try using the main address of the wallet:

44AFFq5kSiGBoZ4NMDwYtN18obc8AemS33DBLWs3H7otXft3XjrpDtQGv7SqSsaBYBb98uNbr2VBBEt7f2wfn3RVGQBEP3A

Now it is running through. But I would like to use a remote node. Do you know what I am doing wrong?

./monero-wallet-cli --daemon-host node-1.sethsimmons.me:18089 --generate-from-view-key wallet-name-xxx

This is what I like about this awesome community. Here I see people asking how to improve the code, how to donate their machine power for mining, and some donating XMR.

This community works for a greater good in real sense. Simply amazing!

Amazing. Perhaps it would be a good idea to fund a year of protocol development from this.

10
SoulMechanic•

Very cool. How are the donations divided up? Does it get divided equally between the devs or by percentage of work? Or some other way?

8
edbwtfXMR Contributor•

It's not going to be shared like loot :) Many contributors volunteer without getting paid, I think one or two people are paid by their employer to work on Monero, and otherwise, development is funded through the Community Crowdfunding System, where the recipient proposes a payment based on the hourly rate they need, and after some discussion, the community can decide whether to pay them or not.

The Core Team is free to use the general fund for any costs that can't be covered by the Community Crowdfunding System. At the moment, it's being used to pay u/rehrar a salary as an assistant to the Core Team, so that there's always someone available to organize stuff and to respond to emergencies. The website says infrastructure costs are covered by sponsors. In the past, the general fund has been used to help fund CCS projects, but I think that hasn't been necessary for quite a while.

Maybe because freedom is priceless

Seems it's worth it to encourage tightening the seals. Potentially as regulations hit other currencies, particularly those with organizations which can be targeted... monero becomes the cayman islands of the crypto universe, but that only works if its security is continued.

Monero was launched like btc. Everybody from the beginning had to either mine or buy their coins. Nothing was given. Also the original dev was not responsive to the communities wishes so the community forked the coin, maybe after 2 months after launch.

It was originally called bitmonero, you will still see that name in places in the code.
