##Release notes:
Yesterday we released v0.17.1.8, it appears that this release resolved:
- Synchronized OK spam
- Public node high CPU usage
- +2 attack (at least the attacker stopped this for now, we will see if it comes back in the future)
We also added mitigations to the memory exhaustion attack, unfortunately the attacker found a second method. It is possible that the attacker got inspired by our Github activity, as we didn't include all our fixes in v0.17.1.8 due to time reasons.
Tomorrow we will put out a new release that addresses todays attack with the following:
- Stricter portable storage sanity checks to avoid memory exhaustion attack
- Aggressive pre-handshake p2p buffer limit
- Packet size

We are getting closer to putting out a release. One of the patches had issues during reorgs, luckily our functional tests caught it. This was a good reminder that rushed releases can cause more harm than the attack itself, in this case the reorg issue could have caused a netsplit.
A short explanation what is going on: An attacker is sending crafted 100MB binary packets, once it is internally parsed to JSON the request grows significantly in memory, which causes the out of memory issue.
There is no bug we can easily fix here, so we have to add more sanity limits. Ideally we would ad

Fixes for the "synchronized ok" spam and the memory exhaustion attack are now on Github. We also have a fix for public node high CPU usage and more mitigations for the +2 attack.
A new release with all those fixes should be out soon (next 24 to 48h if everything works as expected).
If anyone has issues with their node crashing please see: https://reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/kjrub1/_/ggyiids/
We recently had some issues with the GUI not starting on some Linux systems. We reverted the change for v0.17.1.4, before we apply it again we would like some testers.
#Instructions:
- Download: https://gui.xmr.pm/files/docker-linux-static.zip
- Verify hash: https://gui.xmr.pm/files/docker-linux-static-hash.txt
- Extract
- Open terminal and enter:
chmod +x monero-wallet-gui ./monero-wallet-gui- Check if the GUI starts correctly and report in the comments
We tested it on successfully on
- Tails
- Debian 9
- Ubuntu 16.04
- Ubuntu 18.04
- Ubuntu 20.04
The binary has been taken directly from our Github CI system: https://github.com/monero-project/monero-gui/pull/3227/checks
We have a new build script for the Linux GUI using cmake + docker. This is the first time we are using it so I thought I would ask on Reddit for testers before we use it for a release.
Here are the advantages we have with the new build script:
- Easy to build static binaries
- Ubuntu 16.04 or higher support (previously we only supported Ubuntu 18.04 or higher)
- Saves us time and trouble when doing a release
Please test if the GUI starts correctly or if you notice anything else.

Thanks for the feedback in the first post. Here is part two where we took feedback from the first post:
- macOS GUI should now be compatible with 10.12 - 10.15
- Windows download link updated
- Windows installer added
If no major issues are found in this post we will release v0.16 GUI tomorrow.
We are close to releasing GUI v0.16.0.0 with UI changes, new features and bug fixes. Full changelog will be ready with the release. Please download the GUI for your platform and report back if it started correctly, which OS and if you found any issues.
