Why aren't more people talking about EVA? EVA is cool because it's like a small FA off ship you can use to navigate through a wreck for salvage. You can repair your ship's hull. You can transfer to another ship in space.

Imagine a mission to investigate a wreck. You EVA and float through the wreckage scanning for clues. You find dead bodies, log entries and weapons signatures. Now you have the clues you need to hunt down the people who did this.

ReltonTolpo:aduval: Aisling Duval•

In my mind ship interiors is kind of a prerequisite to EVA as I think they require similar technologies and complement one another in gameplay very nicely (e.g. boarding shipwrecks).

I am of course completely wrong, you can have EVA without ship interiors but they are so much more beautiful together.

13
JT_Sovereign•

Someday I hope reboot and repair is replaced with a repair tool for the flight suit. You have to physically go to the module to repair it, or at least a panel or circuitry that represents the rest of the module. Things like life support and FSD would be repaired from inside the ship but things like hardpoints and sensors require EVA repair

9
jshields9999:pirate: Stop the engineering grind!!!•

Yes ship restoration would be a awesome addition.

3
MowTin•

No shipwrecks would work more like settlement interiors except in space. The complexity of ship interiors has to do with a ship moving while you're in it.

3
ReltonTolpo:aduval: Aisling Duval•

There's a little complexity there, but also the sheer number of ship interiors they'd have to design with ships that are very big and creating activities to do all throughout them. That said, I'd imagine it's easier than full planetary atmospheres with weather and oceans.

2
International_XT•

EVA would also be pretty sweet. I'd like to see some heist/sabotage/infiltration missions against space ports and megaships. Picture the Elite equivalent of a raid where you and like a dozen other CMDRs are given the coordinates where a megaship is going to jump in, and you have only 60 minutes to get, grab the McGuffin, and get out before the ship makes its next jump.

Now picture the same thing but it's a Thargoid mothership.

6
MowTin•

I like it but that's way too much imagination for Frontier.

5
phantom_spacecop:trade: Freelancer :explore:•

That’d make scoping systems for ship salvage or distress signal sources so much more interesting too. I personally almost never engage with those signals unless I’m material gathering.

My only qualm thinking about EVA mechanics in VR is remembering trying to play Echo Arena which is sorta kinda similar to EVA motion—all floaty and such—and thats the only time I almost lost my lunch in VR, lol. It was a very fun—short—session.

4
MowTin•

You should build up your VR legs because zero-G in VR is awesome. But this could be fixed with a 3rd person view. If people can handle bouncing around the SRV in VR, I'm pretty sure they can handle almost anything.

2

They used the phrase "Ship interiors will not be a feature at launch."

There's huge difference between "not a feature at launch" and no plans at all to do this.

One phrase gave the community hope. Can you guess which one?

10
JourneymakerCMDR Uninstall•

Did you even watch the video? They clearly state "we have no plans for ship interiors." Not "we have no plans for ship interiors in Odyssey." They had no plans at all. I honestly shouldn't be surprised.

Everything they've said after that video indicates that it's barely something that they've even considered, and they're only even acknowledging it now because people are holding their feet to the fire.

1
Diocletion-Jones•

Yes, I've seen the video. But you seem to misunderstand the issue here. The video has made things very, very clear. Good.

If you're confused this is addressing Frontier's lack of clarification before this video. This is why people are annoyed, because they've had no plans to do ship interiors but used statements like "no plans on release" before, indicating the possibility that it might be after release like in an update like Horizons and Beyond did. Instead they had no plans at all but didn't previously clearly say to the community "no plans at all".

That's what the issue is. This is where the annoyance in the community comes from, Frontiers poor communication skills and management of expectations. Hope this info helps clarify things.

8
AlexandurAmbroza•

The difference is that back then, they were using the phrase "not at launch", which is ambiguous.

5
JourneymakerCMDR Uninstall•

The problem isn't that it's not in EDO (I've known this for quite a while,) it's that they're indicating they're not going to be in Elite at all and that they'll "bring it up" as if it's somehow some new idea instead of something we've literally been asking for since Braben himself mentioned it so many years ago.

1
LeGeNdOfGoW12•

Check this https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/odyssey-update-on-vr-and-ship-interiors.554223/

they always said they would not be at the start, which means it may be another 2-5 years before they do something about it, the only hype that you believe is from youtubers

4†
Dalquists_Revenge•

"Ship interiors will not be included at launch" is a lot different than "we aren't going to do it."

Like always, they used BS phraseology so that they didn't alienate players. If they had no plans to do ship interiors, they should have said "Odyssey does not and will not include ship interiors." Instead they said something that was technically true but highly misleading.

22
NagnuNagnu•

Yeah, I don't really see how anyone is surprised by the information that ship interiors are not currently being worked on. If a company says "not at launch" that 100% means "we aren't working on it but we don't want to say you'll never see it" unless they have an actual roadmap with it on it.

Yeah, it is a weasel way of saying no that they should have never used in the first place but I'm glad they seem to be actually giving us some specifics now.

5
Obiwan_Salami•

been repeated before ad nausium. sadly, fdev doesn't seem to give a shit about their initial promises.

19
Golgot100•

Their initial promise (or at least the one that really counts, as it was tied to the lifetime pass sales, and can be seen as a pre-purchase), was to deliver Legs in 2 DLCs:

For example, our current roadmap is to add (in no particular order):

  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports

They just delivered on one of those tranches with EDO. (Bodged launch aside, and given some drift re station interior combat - somewhat understandably, given the outline was written 7 years ago. But essentially combat, on foot AI, station interiors, etc etc. A big slice of promised Legs action.)

It seems pretty obvious that they do give a shit about those initial promises. (And so they should, because not at least attempting them, while ED is still a going concern, could put them in a bit of bother).

They haven't ruled out ship interiors in the future. They're just saying they're not planned for EDO. And it really shouldn't be a surprise. (Despite Arf's ill-advised 'not at launch' language regarding them).

16
Obiwan_Salami•

fleet carriers were and still are low effort. legs look to be no different so far. done just enough that from a corporate viewpoint they can call it mission accomplished. but its still rushed and poorly done. how long we have have to wait? 5 years? 10? 15? this ain't star citizen, but they've set a precedent the rest of the industry is taking a cue from. personally, i think fdev has bit off more than they can chew with the multiple games they support.

that shouldn't be a surprise.

8
MowTin•

Low effort? I think that's going way too far. I didn't really expect them to even pull this off.

Ideally, you want to start with spacelegs from the beginning. It's hard to add these things in after. Which explains why it seems like separate games. A spaceship game and an fps game.

2†
Obiwan_Salami•

reply to both above comments. moving the goalposts? seriously? take a good long look at who is actually been moving the goalposts recently. fedv management. as far as effort goes, the bottom line is you don't release half-assed content as "finished". did carriers live up to everything promised? has odyssey? no. i'm not buying into any of you apologists and yes men. they can put out a quality product in good faith or get the fuck out of the business.

"Ideally, you want to start with spacelegs from the beginning. "

no shit..... since braben promised that very thing IN THE BEGINNING, then why did they not follow through with it? because the rush to get a cash cow on the market outweighed quality control.

3
Golgot100•

EDO is so transparently a higher effort product than fleet carriers that it’s hilarious that you’ve reached for that.

The time they’re taking is indeed absurd, but that doesn’t change the fact that they have finally released another of the roadmapped DLCs.

Their publishing structure ain’t gonna change miraculously, so god knows why you’re bringing that up. Rather than dream about impossibilities, why not focus on realities?

No matter how many times you wheel the goalposts about, the fact is that they have tackled one of their pre-sold pledges. And it’s not an MVP in terms of features by any means, rough as the landing has been.

I mean, enjoy your pity party if you like. But EDO is still ultimately good news for anyone who would prefer they try and add ambitious planned stuff to ED, rather than not.

Ah yes , Boarding of other ships i.e. walking around in them …

What if I told you fleet carriers are technically ships ? And what if I told you that FDev could make it yet another grind fest to fix your ship after an attack ? Or even better ; fleet carrier exclusive engineers to bolster your defensive and offensive capabilities … ah the possibilities.

-5
Golgot100•

Nah, they can't swivel that far. The grand Brabes is on video talking at length about it being player ships. Many videos ;)

If ED makes the long haul, they'll have a stab at a proper ship interior DLC. They'll have to. Which is all good ;)

5

Yah that's fine by me. They can't handle Odyssey's on-foot technical aspects well enough right now so why would we clamor to have it right now?

I'll pay for ship interior DLC no question about it.

Ship interiors would be nice just because I like that immerse myself into the game, I'm a VR player and from what I heard they will be addressing the VR issue we've all been crying out for, so I'm hoping that happens very soon. In a perfect world The game would be fully VR compatible with motion controllers Etc, ship interiors Earth-like worlds landable with cities oceans and weather. But I'll take VR head look for now

19
Golgot100•

I wouldn't expect any VR movement for ages to be honest.

They're going to canvas some opinions on the forum at some point soon, but that's about it.

If you wanna push them on it, there's a general 'don't forget VR' thread here, and a specific thread pushing for a hacky VR solution in the meantime, if you're interested ;)

7
CrazyPantsLance•

All we need is head look VR with the HUD and we're good. It's really not a very difficult task for them to implement.

5
Golgot100•

Ay as a hacky solution, while it’s not officially launched on the VR market, I think there’s a chance. But with all the reputational hits they e taken recently it’s gonna be tough sell for a while. Maybe once the dust has settled for a bit...

I'm a bit flabbergasted. Arthur said that they wouldn't tell us anything because "words don't mean much", but instead to wait and see what the June patch contained. So we basically have to wait and hope, same as before. And OA is praising this?

This isn't improved communication, this is just attitude and machismo. This doesn't address the fact that we have no idea what is coming, that the roadmap failed to address this need to know.

16
StuartGTGTᴜᴋ 🚀🌌 Watch The Expanse•

And OA is praising this?

Yes. Actions speak louder than words.

we have no idea what is coming

We know three weekly patches are coming this June, the first of which is 6 hours from now. Then at the end of June we'll all see where Odyssey is at. The next major milestone is Odyssey Console launch scheduled for (end of?) Autumn. Odyssey is correctly their priority right now.

Both livestreams were great and full of interesting, frank and open information. Whether ones likes the information/answers that were given is entirely subjective of course.

2†
Delnac•

Actions speak louder than words.

I guess communication and the written word are never required then.

We don't know what they are working on in detail, we have no visibility on anything beyond June other than the fall release. If you don't see how that's deplorable communication, I don't know what to tell you.

Again, attitude isn't information.

jonesing87•

No plans for ship interiors? I'll start buying things from this game again when there are plans. Just need to know their plans for atmospheric planets.

8
SqualZell•

funny how the first 2 questions that were asked when they teased space legs were

  1. atmospheric planet?

  2. Ship interiors?

but nooo not enough interest...

I guess ObsidiantAnt is right. a "No" answer is better than a vague answer... not because of the content of the "no" but because of the significance of it.

having said, there are no plans for ship interiors shows me how disconnected from the playerbase they are now I know not to waste my time and money in ED anymore. Buying Odyssey was my last penny given to Frontier. they've lost their passion.

if I am to wait another 7 years to get ship interiors with gameplay loops in a game might as well say goodbye Frontier Developments, hello Cloud Imperium Games. and at this rate Hello Games might end up doing it first...

7
JourneymakerCMDR Uninstall•

I mean, technically Hello Games already have done it with the way their Freighter ships work. They're crewed by NPC's (despite being mostly just talking heads, at least it's flavor), and you can walk around and build inside of them. Hell, you get your first one for free, for god's sakes!

Imagine ED just giving you a Fleet Carrier.

If NMS had a flight model like Elite, I'd never uninstall it.

Good riddance. Fix odyssey first, then focus on the thargoid storyline, and then fully atmospheric planets.

5†
Dalquists_Revenge•

The problem that most people have is that this was pretty much always assumed to be in production somehow (if not outright mentioned to be so by the devs), if they weren't going to do it why wouldn't they just be up front instead of teasing it for years and then saying it won't happen?

6
DemiserofD•

Who's been teasing it? Players are the ones hyping themselves up; every single time the devs have been asked, the answer has been 'not anytime soon' or some approximation therein.

It's on the long-term plan, so it will probably happen at some point. But that doesn't mean any time soon. It took us nearly a decade to get space legs, after all.

-3
AMDDesign•

lol you haven't been here very long have you? from concept art, to trailers clearly showing ship interiors, to Braben outright saying he wanted EVA gameplay and Ship boarding. Yes, it has been teased, and no, it's not just baseless hype.

11
DemiserofD•

Yes, it's absolutely on their long-term plans. Nobody's denying that.

But other than the footage from nearly a decade ago, there's been squat. Since then, players are the ones making up the hype.

2†
shortyski13•

Id much much much rather they first add deeper pve gameplay, like mmo-style raids that are hard, non-repetetive, and rewarding As Well As natural and meaningful PvP such as giving us 1-5 systems that are Open Only and the people aligned to the super powers controlling those systems galaxy-wide gets bonuses depending on which station/settlement/system is being controlled.

After that, ship interiors.

4
Tinweasel126•

i would rather that they actually create some compelling, challenging gameplay to replace the grind

3
GPruts•

I think it's sad it's not coming. It could be fun repairing a ship under the stress of battle, doing close quarter combat etc.. Many things that could add to the gameplay.

I'm looking forward to his video with examples about that.

2
DemiserofD•

That's really not practical with anything near the game's current design. It's not like Sea of Thieves, where you can just leave your tiller in position and get up to bail out water or fix your mast. The ships are vastly huger, repairs take exponentially longer, movement is vastly deeper and more complicated, and death is infinitely more permanent.

There's absolutely no way single-player ship interiors could function in a combat scenario. The only real way it might work is via multicrew, but even then, boarding is out, and best-case, we're looking at souped up versions of what we've currently got, like better turrets and better pip enhancements.

2
_Ishikawa•

A relationship is built on trust, and part of trust is honesty. If part of that truth means "no we're not hellbent on delivering on previous promises right now" they're going to upset some, but not all.

But take a look at all the problems they're having with Odyssey. A game that was previously viewed from one perspective ( the seat ) has now expanded into something wayyy more dynamic. It's not realistic to expect interiors when they are trying to make simpler stuff work.

When Frontier has got a handle on how to make the on-foot gameplay smooth, I think a reasonable expectation is to add more content to that / improve the major pain points months later. Only then will I start to believe they can handle the very dynamic gameplay that ship interiors entails.

But onto the larger point, the communication is key. If they say one day they'll make a ship interior DLC with similar gameplay within stations and all that then I'm only going to believe it if they're upfront with me right now.

So yeah, kudos to them. Straight talk is refreshing.

1
Arcadia_Ascending•

Looking forward to the video he makes showing examples of good ship interior gameplay.

1
ArmySquirrel:aduval: CMDR Lancel•

Do I want ship interiors? Yes, I do. Do I think everyone wants ship interiors? No, I don't.

Elite Dangerous occupies a weird niche where its main competitors have features which require the on-foot experience. There are players who play Elite Dangerous more so than Star Citizen or No Man's Sky simply because they don't want to waste time when they've decided to fly a spaceship.

Including ship interiors is going to need game loops which are not forced, much like with the design philosophy of Odyssey. It's entirely possible to continue playing the game indefinitely grafted surgically to your commander's chair without the expectation of having to do anything else to enjoy optimal gameplay. To me that's going to have to throw out boarding actions against player ships. Instead, other gameplay will have to be adopted, and I hope Obsidian's video can offer some tantalizing possibilities. Players will need to wishlist quite a wishlist while accepting and respecting the complexities of it and then get a very large player base on board to support it. Honestly, it almost needs its own kickstarter to make it happen at this point, but one with a solid design.

And before anyone says it's a waste of dev resources, I'd point out that Fdev does that all the time as they continue active development of games some of us don't actually play. I suppose those don't cause system stability issues for Elite, but I think patch day will be patch day regardless of if the feature was desired or not.

Disappointed for sure, but with the alpha it was a safe guess. Ship interiors would make multicrew way more I interesting, instead of rolls you could just hop into the pilot or gunner seat. EVAs would also be fun to make repairs on your own with out limpets.
