Taewyth•

I like how it's described as "far-right" and those guys are offended like "yeah we're in the same political category as Mussolini but fascism isn't our thing!"

99
justeandj•

I've gotten into arguments where a conservative will straight-faced call Dems fascists and socialists in the same breath.

65
Taewyth•

That's the kind of people that read "National Socialist" and think this is actual socialism

59
SnuffleShuffle•

I mean... You can then proceed to tell them that if "national socialism" is leftist and they're a nationalist, that makes them leftist. Maybe then they'll see the hypocrisy?

Who am I kidding? They'll never see their hypocrisy.

31
3oogerEater•

That’s a good time to remind them that we are democratic republic, just like east Germany.

13
Cue_626_go•

That's so fucking stupid!

Do they think the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is democratic, too?

12
PinkBird85•

Oh, that argument comes up just a few comments down ...

7
Kriegerian•

I enjoy rattling off a description of who Röhm was and why Hitler had him murdered when idiots say out loud that they think Nazis were socialists.

5

There were several people talking about how fascism is just a form of socialism. I’m really sad they locked the thread because I love bringing up the night of long daggers when they do that.

2
Kriegerian•

They don’t know what anything actually is, they just think “whatever I don’t like is socialism or Communism. Plus other people keep calling me fascist like it’s a bad thing, so I’m going to call them that! I am very smart.”

7
rhomboidrex•

I have a professor who called me fascist for telling him Hunter’s laptop was bullshit.

I’m a fucking anarchist lol

4
Renown84•

I agree with your sentiment but isn't socialism an economic system and fascism a political system? No reason a country couldn't employ both. Isn't this often the criticism of communism as well? That most historical examples of communism have been paired with fascism (USSR?) whereas paired with democracy it would be much better for the average person than democracy paired with capitalism

1
THedman07•

Fascism is a combination of a political system and an economic system. Authoritarianism and extreme nationalism covers both.

Stalinist communism is a combination of authoritarianism and socialism, not fascism. There's some overlap because they're both run under dictatorships. Fascism has central control of many industries, but doesn't have the concept of societal ownership.

I'm simplifying things (likely too much) but the gist is that authoritarianism doesn't equal fascism.

A mod in the comments got mad that someone asked what “far right” was if Marxism, fascism, and socialism were all the same thing/far left. After being mocked he responded far right encompassed both monarchies and republics focused on protecting individual liberty. I guess in his mind monarchies aren’t the same thing as ultranationalist authoritarians with dictatorial power? Mind meltingly stupid.

6
THedman07•

You know you're off track when you're trying to square leadership by divine right and democracy to make them fit into the same box.

Oh lord, the comments.

Yeah. I posted a couple of responses on there. Waiting to be downvoted into oblivion now.

i love that one guy pulling out quotes from the self-proclaimed italian “philosopher of fascism” to try and show that “aKsHuALLy, fAsCiSm iS a LeFtiSt dOcTriNe” when that same philosopher also has this quote where he basically argues that fascism is democratic

The authority of the State was not a product, but a presupposition. It could not depend on the people, in fact, the people depended on the State… The Fascist state, on the other hand, is a popular state, and, in that sense, a democratic State par excellence… Every citizen shares a relationship with the State and is so intimate that the State exists only in so far as it is made to exist by the citizen.

The definitions are all describing more or less the same thing. It's hard to define a political ideology in just a few sentences so there's bound to be some variation, but why are they acting like the definitions are so radically different that they're talking about different ideologies entirely?

25
moleraticalOP•

Because they don't want to admit they are fascist.

27
LOBM•

Because they claim nazis (national SoCiAlIsTs) are far-left. I.e. they want to claim their enemies are fascist-communist-socialists.

21
Eldanoron•

Amusing part is, at the bottom of the third screenshot (DuckDuckGo) it says far-right as well. Guess they missed that part?

24
kai58•

It does seem somewhat in character for them to not read past the first result

17
henkydinkrae•

In the comments someone pointed out what far right actually means but said the “google is confused” because it doesn’t understand the difference between a far-right political compass and far-right American republicans. It’s google that’s confused!

10
Eldanoron•

I did see that one. They pointed out Bernie is effectively left center for a political compass but extreme communist for American political compass. Like dude, that just goes to show you that everything is shifted further right in the US. Freaking democrats are pretty much right-center. So what does that leave for the republicans?

9
KnottShore•

Today's GOP would call this a socialist, if not communist, platform.

Republican Dwight Eisenhower 's 1956 election campaign platform summary.

1.Provide federal assistance to low-income communities

2.Protect Social Security

3.Provide asylum for refugees

4.Extend minimum wage

5.Improve unemployment benefit system so it covers more people

6.Strengthen labor laws so workers can more easily join a union

7.Assure equal pay for equal work regardless of sex

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/1956-republican-platform/

Most Democrats would support a platform such as this.

4

By result, Democrats are now effectively to the right of Eisenhower

Also OP saying "what's wrong with putting the country before the individual?"

They are a joke, but a really unfunny one

10
kokoyumyum•

And because someone chooses a wiki definition, that becomes a search engine definition? The stupid is on many levels.

7
CatProgrammer•

Lots of people use Wikipedia so Google just pulls info from there. I can google applesauce and get a sidebar showing a Wiki summary about applesauce. Presumably that's what they're referring to?

5
kokoyumyum•

But it isn't a Google definition.

Maybe the confused person used Wikipedia to learn how Google works,?

Garbage in, garbage out?

"Fascism and Authoritarian are bad words, and my tribalism demands that I can't be in any group that bad people are also members of, therefore 'right' must mean the opposite of what they say it means."

The comments in that post are a mess of everyone equivocating and demonstrating that they have no idea what any of these words actually mean. They also do this with words like racism and Nazi.

5
Rostbaerdt•

The guy that tried to explain that fascism comes the from the Italian word "fascio" , which means bundle had me cracking up. "because a bundle of sticks is stronger than just one lone stick"

Mussolini himself proclaimed it came from the Latin "fasces". A WEAPON (made from a bundle of sticks AND AN AXE) that was a symbol for authority in Roman times. To make sure that everybody knew that it was the origin for the name he put it on pretty much every icon and flag.

It's scary how they are trying to clean up the history of their origins and beliefs :(

2
rayray3300•

They do know that the definition was made by Wikipedia, not Google, right?

4
GunnaBlast69•

I’m scared to check the comments, what’s the big deal with the google definition? That fascism is called right wing?

2
RickRE1784•

The post, okay, it's stupid, but the comments! Infuriating. Honestly how could someone possibly be that stupid. Someone dig up a quote of someone who said that some forms of "socialism" can be fascist to proof that "fascism is basically just some kind of leftist/Marxist". How could someone be this blind to the actual point..?

Ummmm... It's so obvious I'm not even sure how to explain it, but I'll give it a shot. Republicans look up the literal definition of Fascism, the one that has been used for roughly a century now, and are upset because they think MSM, google, and Wikipedia are all propaganda out to make them look bad because the definition describes themselves.
