[X-post] We stand with our fellow mod teams, in calling upon Reddit to take action against Coronavirus misinformation on their website

A few comments seemingly object to this, so rather than reply to each one I'll sticky this one.

We won't apologise for posting this, the mod team is unanimous in supporting it.

I agree that this is a political post, but it's not particularly controversial, and highly relevant to Reddit, of which this sub is a part.

To those who object to a political issue interrupting their browsing of a Photography sub, I say; that's life. Political decisions affect every aspect of it, and it's right that you are interrupted occasionally to be made aware of issues.

Many changes of direction, such as the end of Apartheid, or Women's suffrage, only came about because activists inconvenienced ordinary people. And on the scale of inconvenience, this is trivial.

Well said Dotnon.

TIL the first amendment and free speech rights apply to reddit. I will never understand people that blindly say “free speech” on private platforms. you signed a terms of service agreement when you made an account, whether you read it or not is your fault so don’t get upset when “muh free speech” is infringed upon on a private platform which you agreed to the terms of.

Who gives a shit about the American first amendment? The Americans can't legally look at a picture of a topless 17-year old but in Europe we can.

So, let's have a three tier Internet. One for the communists, one for the Americans and and open one for the rest of us.

I would like an "absolutely no politics" button that filters out every post containing any politics at all. Reddit is not a good place for these topics and every subreddit turned himself to political discussions.

I would like this subreddit to be free of any of these topics, but I understand that some mods want to stand aside against misinformation.

I hate that "please believe in science and try not kill so many people" counts as "politics" nowadays.

This is basic science, logic, and human decency, not politics. I'll freely admit that it isn't relevant to AskPhotography, but that's a different argument.

20
Icarus_skies•

No one of sound mind asks people to "believe" in science. Science has absolutely nothing to do with belief.

It's about trust. These are two very different things. We want people to "trust" science, not believe in it. Belief presupposes zero evidence; blind faith if you will. Trust presupposes a level of skepticism, relying on a preponderance of evidence. The idea that we "believe" in science is part of what contributes to the mess we're in in the first place.

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'

QuokkaSpiritAnimal•

...you're suggesting I'm not of sound mind, simply because I used the words "believe in" rather than "trust in"?

Science does require some level of belief or faith - if for no other reason than that neither I nor any other human has both the intelligence and time to understand every single subfield of science, nor the resources to replicate every single experiment ever performed for ourselves. At some point we just have to take it on faith that yes, all of those particle physicists probably do know what the hell they're talking about, because I'm not about to build my own Large Hadron Collider to double-check their results.

Call that blind faith or trust or whatever you want, but it is still necessary.

f_cysco•

Yeah, I get your point, it just don't seems right to censor complete subreddits. They are blacklisted to appear on Popular, so there are only circlejerkers which little appearance anywhere else.

-1†
Icarus_skies•

What's not right about it? When the Donald sub wouldn't control their users calling for assassinations of public figures, it took a massive effort on the part of the userbase to get them shut down. How is this any different? This isn't politics, it's literally life and death. Allowing these psychopaths a platform to spew their garbage literally gets people killed.

7
xSikes•

Have to do this to have just a photography subreddit.

-3
TinfoilCamera•

I have a better idea - let's just talk about photography and let the rest of reddit fend for itself.

The mods of one of my favorite subs said it best when they said "No" to this silliness.

-----

"We don't care about your Reddit petitions, we don't care about your stance against hate subreddits. You people take Reddit too seriously and need to get help. Remember back in the day, that when you saw something you didn't like, you ignored it and kept doing what you were originally doing? Do that. If you see something you don't like, why are you going to spend your energy bitching and moaning about something, that in the grand scheme of things, doesn't matter? Go back to working on your book report or playing your video game or spending time with your kids. Don't let some asinine comment / picture ruin your day. Grow up."

-12
LamentableLensMOD•

I would respectfully suggest that (1) misinformation and disinformation (on any number of topics) fueled by social media does matter in the grand scheme of things, and (2) "when you see something you don't like, ignore it" is terrible advice when it comes to those things that matter.

12
QuokkaSpiritAnimal•

“When you see something you don’t like, ignore it and move on” carried to the extreme becomes “Why would I care that people are being rounded up and sent to gas chambers? I’m not Jewish, after all!”

Now, I can hear the objection already “Holy shit, dude, we’re talking about social media posts, not gas chambers. You’re being ridiculous!”

And here’s the problem. We’re evidently not allowed to stand up against bullshit until it reaches that point. And by that point it’s obviously far too late. So when should we have stood up against it?

Well, right fucking now’s as good a time as ever. This conservative bullshit disinformation campaign is extremely dangerous. It is getting people killed ever single day. If we don’t stop it, it will continue to get worse. So we’re standing up against it.

And, I’ll note something else interesting. You saw something you didn’t like - this post - and instead of ignoring it and moving on, like you said people should, you instead felt the need to stand up and object to it. That’s interesting, don’t you think?

Talking about photography would involve talking about how people get angrier at my mask than they ever did about my camera, or how every trip out with my camera is a risk of getting a breakthrough infection from someone who refused to even put a mask on to protect others.

2
xSikes•

I agree with that to a point. But remember to look at other message boards with similar issues, these people can cause a domino effect and eventually cause a bigger problem that will effect you. Just because you ignore it doesn't mean it goes away. I want this sub to be just about photography but that can change real quickly. Cause and effect.

I'm curious why this has become such a concern when the pandemic is practically over. I don't even think about covid anymore. Maybe because I don't follow politics.

This campaign seems to be run by politically obsessed people who are stuck in an echo chamber. Have fun!

I'm curious why this has become such a concern when the pandemic is practically over.

The data would like a word

9
VerticalQuery•

I hate to say but the data doesn't look particularly bad nor is there any evidence that this data is driven by misinformation.

-12
dotnonOP•

20,000 people dying with covid, in the past 28 days, in the US alone, “doesn’t look particularly bad”??

You must be trolling.

The vast majority of the people dying today are unvaccinated. In the US, vaccines are widely available. It’s really not a stretch to deduce that vaccine disinformation has killed people, the only question is how many.

11
Roticap•

Oh look, it's a troll account shilling the narrative that we just need to normalize this new source of preventable death, because they're determined to not make any small changes in their life

I’m curious as to why you are engaging here, now.

Going by your comment history you’ve never contributed to AskPhotography before.

Your engagement with Reddit also seems to be limited to a very narrow subset of topics.

Smells like shill to me.

I’m curious as to why you are engaging here, now.

Thank you for your interest in my account. Correct I am subscribed to a narrow set of topics. I intentionally avoid anything to do with politics or current events. I'm just not interest in slacktivism.

And no I don't participate in this subreddit but I do browse it

Well said.

Don't you just love when someone tries to "shame" you by looking at your history.

In the U.S., at least, positive cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are all on the rise, with numerous states setting pandemic records. Entire states are out of ICU beds and hospitals are facing critical staffing shortages. How exactly are you defining "practically over"?

You may not think about COVID anymore, but your ignorance does not change reality.

7
[deleted]•

Practically over? Which country are you from?
