I have this set up in my new apt and was wondering was it worth hiring a professional to hard wire it or should I just leave it? Or can someone with basic knowledge do it

Usually when this is done in apartments, it's because the ceiling is concrete slab and it's impossible to get permanent wiring to that spot.
A real electrician knows nothing is impossible
Not impossible but sometimes not worth the time/effort
It's always worth the time and effort you just charge more lol
I’ve turned down plenty of jobs that just aren’t worth the going price..Someone else can do it. Just the other day a guy needs to go from 3 wire to 4 wire for a new hot tub..the wire isn’t ran in conduit and he has 14 feet of concrete that it’s ran under. I passed on that quick as shit.
Charge all you want. It’s if they are willing to pay more. With my experience working on rental properties, they’re hardly willing to pay for that.
Why tiger woods ex wife bought a house ….realized it was shit and rebuilt it up to code … it was cheaper and easier
Correct. Get the chaser and hammer drill, get dusty, wedge the conduits in, plaster and paint
Not impossible, just use wire chase on the wall. Looks like shit but still better than a wire strung across the ceiling.
That's when wiremold is a halfway decent option (still looks like shit though)
Ahh okay that makes more sense thank you!
Wire mold or conduit?
what about a conduit?
If you can swag hooks you can run conduit.
Use wiremold
My 100 yr old slat and lathe house, mold everywhere
This. I'd also also turn the socket into a switch.
So many people in this thread have never seen a swag light. Jesus. Spend 5 minutes in a Florida condo area and you'll find hundreds. They sell the kits to do this at home depot.

It's late August. I'll take your word for it.
What's a swag light?
Plugs into wall, mounts on the ceiling
How dare people not know everything. The fucking audacity.
Here sir have an award.
I mean, we just call them pendant lights where I'm from, so that might be part of your problem.
Also, ceiling fans here are very few and far between, so a "swag fan" where it plugs into the wall is probably a one on a million encounter. I've certainly never seen one.
There is nothing acceptable about this
Unfortunately that’s how my apt came
If you are a renter you need to talk to your landlord about it.
I did they just said from how “old” the apt is but other then that they are not sure
This is correct. Old houses often did not have ceiling outlets for lights or fans. There's really nothing at all functionally wrong with this except it isn't how we like to do it now. As long as the fan and cord is adequately supported, and the wiring for the receptacle is sound, this is an electrically safe installation.
Do you have the landlord's permission to change it?
If you own the place and it bothers you it can be done but most likely wont be cheap.
That’s what I expected it does bother me but more then anything is the fact my bed sits right next to the plug
Do you know if it's concrete or wood frame? If it's concrete you really aren't going to have much luck. Something could in theory be done but in practicality would be a massive pain and expensive
Maybe, but it really depends on the situation. I'd expect it to be around 300-500 for an electrician doing work on the side of the above space is an attic. If there's no crawl space above you'll have to cut drywall most likely, which will add cost.
Gonna have to start selling clients on this design, while keeping the bid the same.
huh
Nice illustration.
So much swag!
I have this exact setup in one of my rental properties. On a switched receptacle.
If you already have this fan installed and you have a neighbor above you this ain’t a bad setup. If you don’t like the swag look you can use wiremold , a metal channel cover that lays flat on the surface and hides the wire
I wish u would’ve though of that🙃
I'm not an electrician, but it if we're me and it was concrete ceiling, I would run conduit and paint it. My 2 cents!
Please take those two cents back, thank you.
You might as well keep em, you might need them some day.
Saw this exact settup in a house I was renting in Buffalo. I’d never seen this before either and it struck me odd. Wood framed house with attic space above so I have no idea why they did it this way.
I have another unit above but even then seemed odd
If it's knauf ceiling , it could be done relatevly easy Wooden, even easier Concrete,it wouldnt be worth it ..IMO
is it really called swag mount?
Apparently 🥴I don’t see the swag though
This may look tacky, but there isn't anything wrong with it. You could buy an inline switch, it just plugs into the outlet and the fan plugs into it. Make sure it's UL listed tho, not some crap from wish or Amazon.
I am fairly handy and have done this in my house.
Based on my experience, hire an electrician. He’ll likely need to make a few holes in the wall/ceiling. You can patch those yourself and sand and match paint.
Are you installing it to replace an existing ceiling light fixture?
It already came like this but idk if they sell fans like this? Or can it be wired to the fuse box?
Why didn't you just take a pic LMAO
I was late for work already 😂
Are you renting? Don't dare touch it if you do.
