Had my orchiectomy today. What did they send you home with for pain management?

I got sent home with 3 pills of 7.5/325 hydro/apap, which has barely touched the pain. My 2.5" incision (nsfw) looks clean; I just get stabbing pain where my legs meet my scrotum whenever I move like to go to the bathroom. Curious what other people were prescribed for their surgeries.

I spoke to the on-call doc, who cited other patients and studies as to why I didn't need more narcotics, rather than listening to my personal pain level. He also told me not to use NSAIDs and to just use Tylenol. He eventually relented and agreed to put in a script for 6 more pills in the morning, but to use Tylenol overnight. I texted my surgeon afterward, who told me I should visit the ER if I need more, because I shouldn't need that much narcotics. (I think it's a bit irresponsible to tell a soon-to-be immunocompromised cancer patient to visit an already-struggling ER during the COVID pandemic to score pain meds, but I didn't tell them that.) I just don't want to have to constantly be on the phone with their office to beg for pain management to then go out to get tiny refill after tiny refill.

I feel like I'm being treated like I'm drug-seeking when I just want to manage the first few days of pain. I'm not faking it. They sliced me open removed an organ. Pain should be expected. I never had this much trouble getting adequate pain meds for when I broke my leg. Three pills just feels absurd. But the more I protest, the more it looks like I'm seeking. This feels like a catch-22.

Thanks for reading and your responses.

Goodness, 3 pills? Wtf. They sent me home with oxycodone. I only took them if I really needed them (aspirin otherwise). Took them for about a week before aspirin alone did the trick.

Mine was a long time ago before the opioid crisis. I got Percocet after my orchiectomy and OxyContin after my RPLND. I abused the hell out of them and it started a long unhealthy relationship with pills that resulted in a near fatal overdose in the early 2000s.

I get that some docs are tighter gripped with post surgical pain management these days. Do you have access to cannabis?

No need to be sorry. There were some things I needed to learn.

I thought you were someone else before I realized this must be your alt account lol. I thought, “damn, they’re fucking both these guys out of the good meds.”

I made them give me another 5/325 hydrocodone before I left the hospital. It was a hassle and I had to be pretty demanding about it. My sister, who is a nurse, told me to ask for pain meds before leaving and so I did. They sent over a prescription for 20 pills of the 5/325 and told me to alternate with acetaminophen/ibuprofen. I used 8 of the 20, single pill each time.

Only giving you 3 was dumb. You're not going to become a junky in the span of 5 days. They could have at least given you a few days supply. Everyone is different with pain. I find you really have to advocate for pain meds as they're extremely conservative with giving it out now. Don't be afraid to do what you need to do to get more meds. It's ridiculous, but we do what we have to do. Hopefully you won't need them for more than 3-5 days.

Hope your recovery is speedy and goes without complication!

Nothing. I was given a schedule of when to take Tylenol and advil every day for 7 days then to take as needed. I didn't have any issues though.

Everyone is different. The soreness for me went away pretty quick, but I was able to lay low and be a bum for a several days and let it heal.

Yep I was the same. For the first two days if I just didn’t move I didn’t really have pain.

The day after though I did poke my ball sack with my finger because I wanted to see what the prosthetic felt like - and it was like white hot fire pulsing through my body. Just a tiny poke too. Didn’t do that twice hahah.

Hi, Europe here. Sorry to hear but it read like they sent you home with just three pills for a whole week. In Europe we use classic pain medicine like Paracetamol 1g of which you can use 4 a day (and wouldn't get you addicted I think?). Used them for four weeks (orchiectomy and after that drainage operation because of swelling). I had to rest a lot and couldn't walk easily for the first days (like crippled 87yo) - what makes them think you can hop for some more pleasure pills to the ER? For the alternative I have no idea.Unfamiliar with the American deliverance of pain meds. Also, rest and use some ice pack for the swelling from all that unnecessary walking around begging for medicine . I guess you'll have a post-op appointment to check your scar or something? Ask for possible alternatives?

Sorry to hear that. I live in California and had no issue getting prescribed Hydrocodone (didn’t even ask). I was prescribed Hydrocodone and 600 mg Ibuprofen. The first night after my left radical orchy had me almost passing out on the way to the bathroom a couple of times and I left the hospital with all the good stuff in me. After the first night the pain was completely manageable with 600 mg Ibuprofen every 6 hours alternating with 500 mg Tylenol ever six hours (that way I had something every 3 hours) for week 1 which was mostly in bed. Honestly, I didn’t take the Hydrocodone because I was afraid of getting constipated, but it was nice to know I had the option. The walks to the bathroom the first two days were tricky but not too bad. After that I was fine until week two when the pain really started. I was on my feet a lot at work which just exacerbated everything. Ibuprofen was my best friend that week, but except for one time, I never felt I needed the Hydrocodone and I didn’t have it with me in that instance, so it wasn’t any help. I know everyone is different and I think I had some localized numbness that helped for the first week, but if you can’t get the prescription pain meds, I recommending being careful but heavy handed with the ibuprofen. Tylenol kind of sucked and was just to make the ibuprofen last.

They just told me to take paracetamol and rest. The worst of the pain only lasted a couple days for me, and in my case was not super bad. Hope you feel better soon!

They gave me a script of oxy but I never touched them. 4 ibuprofen every 3- 4 hours for the first 3 days and then I was good to go.

I got hydrocodone as well, but what the heck at 3 pills?

I took 1 vicodin and after that I was good. The pain was manageable so I didn't really need the narcotics they sent me home with.

The second time I told them not to prescribe me narcotics because I didn't want them.

5 pills of oxy. Took two the first day/night and nothing after that.

I was able to get away with Tylenol. The pain wasn't terrible, it was just when I had to cough, sneeze, or get up from sitting.

You shouldn’t need much pain drugs for orchiectomy. After my RPLND I only got a week with of Oxy. Risks of addiction not worth it. Suck it up.
