Love letter to depression

There must be a place where I can smile

I haven’t done that

Not for real, not in a while

There must be people who laugh and sing

They’re a pretty face

They’d take me from your embrace

Don’t ask for me

Don’t try

To say I can be saved

Is the saddest lie

Oh, hi there; didn't see you! You've reached r/OCPoetry. This is a workshop site where you can share, read, and talk about eachother's poetry & etc. To post your own poems, you need to give feedback to 2 other writers. If you aren't trying to share, you're encouraged to give feedback, but aren't required. Try to be nice, questioning, and specific. If you can't do that - eat a cabbage and come back later. Try to give feedback to a writer without any feedback. Lastly, read our feedback guide , other writer's comments, or this author’s feedback links. If you still aren't sure whether your comments are useful ‘feedback’, or you have any other questions, send us a modmail!

The brevity of the lines combined with the subject matter has a chilling effect on me. It's not just sad, it's cold, which is the opposite of what you'd expect a love letter to be.

However, while I see the love letter angle here (especially with the line about hoping for someone to take the speaker from depression's embrace), it's a bitter one that feel just as much like a warning to others looking in on such an obviously damaging relationship, The ending in particular reads like a farewell letter to friends and family as the speaker is taken away by depression ("Don't ask for me/Don't try") rather than a love letter.

You've captured a really particular voice that sums up depression remarkably well. My only criticism is perhaps to think about your title, as the content reads to me like more than just one genre of letter.

I think this a very concise poem that while at the beginning might seem like it brings a little levity to depression, but by the time i read those last two lines my heart dropped to my feet...chills. Those last two lines are powerful, and for me, brings the poem to a sinister end.

I think my one criticism would be the "dont ask for me / don't try" lines disrupted the meter of the poem, the lack of syllables there threw me off and I might just throw another syllable in or make a line break. Otherwise, I think i will be thinking of this one for the rest of the day. Great Work.

This resonated with me due to personal experience (I don't want to say depression, but pretty damn close) as it incapsulates what one feels when in this state of mind, the desperation to find something- or someone to help us make it through as we fake our expressions to look more presentable to others (Not for real, not in a while). I also like how it seems like the subject is talking to themself, but then turns to depression in direct speech (-your embrace) and then back to themself and lastly the hopelessness represented in the final few lines.

It's pretty simple, yet simultaneously impactful. Good work.
