The Firstborn "Daughter"

It was a deed spoken of only in whispers at court, a bleak reminder of the darkest days of the Kingdom, where a neighbouring Empire had been mere days away from conquering them. The King had been desperate, deeply so, unwilling to see the bountiful kingdom he and his ancestors had built crumble into ruin - and so he had resorted to beseeching her for aid - the Black Witch, an enigmatic figure steeped in infamy who stood apart from any nation, a law upon to herself from a hidden mountain holdfast. A pact was swiftly made - in exchange for saving his kingdom, the King would grant the Witch his firstborn daughter as soon as she reached adulthood, so that she might become an apprentice, had she the talent, or a toy, had she not.

Though the King disliked the conditions, he had no choice. And so, reluctantly, he made the deal and shook hands with the fell Witch with bloodied palms, turning away as she unleashed her magic upon the invading armies. In but a moment, it was as though the land itself struck against them - rivers flooded, the ground shook with sudden earthquakes, illness spread through their ranks like wildfire, their supplies spoiled and rotted before their eyes. Within a day they had fled, and sought peace in the face of such dark magic.

Prosperity returned to the Kingdom - but the King grew arrogant, and sought to avoid his end of the deal - he and his court mage ensured that the only children his wife bore him were a trio of sons. After all, if he had no daughters, the Witch had nobody to claim.

And now, years later, he and his poor firstborn son are about to discover that the Witch will not be so easily foiled - if there is to be no daughter for her to take, then she would just take the firstborn son instead and use her magics to ensure he becomes feminine enough to be a suitable apprentice.
